Alright, I figured I'd like to do the planning for this one now... Here's my preliminary route: 1. Castlevania level. Done to get Simon and his special weapon, the trademark cross boomerang. This is first because said special weapon greatly shortens every subsequent boss fight (it's the strongest weapon and you can throw 3 at a time). Really, it's the only special weapon worth getting in a timeattack. There are also certain enemies in the Goonies level which MIGHT be unavoidable and need to be killed with his cross/whip. Need to test that...regardless, I would still do this level first. 2. Goonies level. Done just to get Mikey. 3. King Kong level. Needs Mikey to fit through certain passages. Just get King Kong here...I aim to do so this early because he walks slightly faster than the other characters. I only get Simon before him because there's a boss in this level. 4. Getsufuu-Maden level. King Kong is needed to jump over a wall here. This level contains the cape which allows Konami Man & Girl to fly. I get it for one specific purpose; it doesn't cost much time due to this level being completely linear. Of course, I also snag Fuuma (as he is called for short) here. 5. Goemon level. If you fly underneath the temple where Goemon is kept, you can grab an item that doubles everyone's attack power for everything. This is the only reason I grabbed that cape earlier, and I think that all this pays off with the subsequent boss fights. Other than that, Goemon is rescued and that's it. 6. Moai level. Fuuma's sword is needed to break the blocks here. This one will require some playing to map out precisely, due to the tight spaces and powerful enemies involved. Only thing to do here is find Moai. 7. Shooter level. Probably will be done in a playaround style as there are multiple speed-ups around. Not sure whether Vic Viper or Twinbee can defeat the boss faster, needs testing. 8. Last level. Totally linear, not much to say, chuck boomerangs at the last boss. -Josh

I have no idea of how this game looks like, but I like its soundtrack :)

well it seems like that's really the fastest way to do it, if you organize the whole run around a) getting simon first, and b) getting the attack power doubler as soon as possible after that. Greatly looking forward to this one. heh, apparently there's a sequel too?

Yep, that's another neat thing about this game: It plays the theme song of each character while you're using him/her. Simon's is Vampire Killer (Castlevania level 1 theme), Goemon's is a recurring theme from several of his games, and Mikey actually gets the Cyndi Lauper Goonies song (!). Oh, one big thing I forgot to mention: You need to find a key in each level to rescue its hero. In most levels it's guarded by a boss; the Goemon and Goonies levels are the only exceptions. And another possible issue that I may run into...I definitely see taking damage as a necessity at some points, as it does not affect your forward progress at all. Each character has his/her own lifebar, so you can afford to take quite a few hits as the game progresses. However, in the Getsufuu-Maden/Moai/Final levels, enemies deal a ton of damage to you. So, depending on how much damage is a necessity in these levels, I may need to revisit one level. Let me explain: In the Castlevania level, there is a suit of armor that doubles everyone's defense. It can only be reached by flying, though, and with Simon's strength I do not want to postpone his level until I am able to get it. Hence, I will need to backtrack here if this is the case. Hm...anyway, I'll finish Sword Master before there's any worrying about this! -Josh

OK, one important thing I forgot: In the Goemon and Goonies levels there are places where you can gamble to earn bullets (the game's equivalent to Castlevania hearts). Thus, it probably would be a great idea to do the one in the Goonies level, so that you don't have to waste time killing enemies later on. Anyway, work on this will begin soon. -Josh

Okie dokie, Castlevania level (the first one I do, remember) is done with a time of 6:56 and exactly 800 rerecords. MAN this game is going to be long, I can tell... Neat thing is that your characters move while attacking, so you can kill enemies without wasting time. Also, like in Batman, you can move through enemies after hitting them. However, there is a problem that will come into play later on: I don't know of any emulator that gets the scrolling right for the shooter stage. Well, if nothing else, that'll make it REALLY obvious that it's an emulator movie. =P Moving onward to The Goonies, with a little gambling on the side, Josh.

Whew...FINALLY finished the Goonies level. Was a bit shorter than Castlevania, game-timewise, but took much more effort to figure out due to the abundance of unavoidable enemies. The total time of the movie now is 13:01, with over 2200 rerecords. Yes, that is just for two levels. =P Next up is King Kong's domain, which seems to be much smaller than the other levels but has yet more unavoidable enemies... -Josh

King Kong and Getsufuu-Maden are done. Total time is now 23:38, with over 4300 rerecords. Kong's stage wasn't so bad compared to Goonies, but Fuuma's sure as hell was. Also, I had to use the healing room after Kong; you have to take a ton of damage to maintain your speed in his stage, and you hardly have any opportunities to kill enemies (and grab life hearts) without wasting time. Additionally, everyone ended up having to take lots of damage in Fuuma's stage too, so that healing room turned out to be worth it. BTW, Kong isn't any faster than the other characters. However, I still use him a lot because of his high jump and attack power. Now it's on to Goemon. This stage is just as about as easy as Castlevania, so I'm hoping I can refill everyone's life here. Reason being, Moai's world is going to be pure, unadulterated hell. I can just feel it. -Josh

Well, Goemon turned out to be just about as easy as I thought it was, and I came out with everyone's life full. Time is now 29:15, with over 4900 rerecords. Now I shudder in fear at the thought of the Evil Easter Island... BTW, does anyone here know if that level is based on a game or just made up for this one? Thanks, Josh.

Moai heads seem to show up all over the place for no explicable reason. And yes. Yes we are eagerly awaiting it. I've played the game and know how tough the dang thing is. Goonies level. *shudder* Those plant things on the ledges... ever try doing that level first? Lotta rerecords to kick/punch those flower...things without falling/taking damage. I'm definitely looking forward to the movie. Shame the sequel sucked, but...meh.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll warn you all now, though, this is only a preliminary version. I wouldn't submit it even if this site did take FCE Ultra, for three reasons: 1. I make a couple mistakes speed-wise in the Goonies level, which I didn't catch until much later on. They cost me no more than 2-3 seconds, but are rather obvious. 2. There is some room for improvement stylistically. I take some unnecessary damage, switch characters at seemingly random times, etc. 3. I use the translated ROM; next time I'll use the original to make it feel a little more authentic. If anyone still wants to see this when it's done, flaws and all, one of my friends should be willing to host it (along with my Castle of Dragon and Sword Master timeattacks). BombAHead: Ah yes, the lovely plant things. I think you'll like how I deal with them in the movie. =) Do you remember the Green Dragon Hall of Death, by any chance? That's what scares me so much about the Evil Easter Island. -Josh

Doesn't ring a bell. I tried getting through the Castlevania and Goonies levels, realized how tough it was (stupid Dracula(s)!), and decided to wait to see your run before going on. *shudder* Moai.

Ah, I see. Trust me, if those two levels are scaring you off, you don't want to try the rest of the game. Moai is on a level of its own when it comes to frustration, and Fuuma's stage is up there as well. -Josh

I'll take your word for it. How many levels are there aside from the six initial ones? ...And now I can't get the image of Homer Simpson doing the shudder-Moai line... ><; *swat!* @@;

After rescuing all six characters, you go into an overhead shooter stage. You can pick either Vic Viper or Twinbee, both of whom have some of their trademark weapons (Vic's missiles and laser, Twinbee's boxing gloves and ripple laser). There are also speed-ups, options, and shields which both of them can use. The first part of the level is in the Twinbee style, with clouds which you can shoot to reveal bells (which, in turn, you can shoot to reveal powerups), while the second part is Gradius-esque. Then there are a couple minibosses followed by the main boss of the level. After this is the final level. It's some sort of alien planet, with its own fair share of tough enemies. Completely linear, rather short, and easier than the Moai stage IIRC. The final boss theme will be verrrrrrrry familiar to all of you, I'm sure. ;) -Josh

OMG...finally got Moai over with. Total time is 36:21, with over 6300 rerecords. And I now realize I made another mistake. I should've grabbed Fuuma's special weapon. It's a long-ranged, 3-way shuriken that can break the blocks in Moai's world; with the sword, I have to stop a lot in order to cut my way through all of the blocks, but with the shurikens I could have gone through and kept moving forward. Ah well. Anyway, the shooter stage is next. I'll play this one with a "shoot everything with 100% accuracy" style. Reason being, I have to shoot a lot of stuff to collect powerups (to beat the bosses as quickly as possible) anyway. Don't worry, though, I won't skimp on speedups! =) -Josh

Thanks a lot for the info, never heard of that game! Interesting... Anyway, I'm halfway through the shooter stage now. This is taking longer than I thought, mainly because I've never done an "aesthetic form" before. One thing I'm doing for now: In the second half of this level, you can't even see some of the walls and flying objects because the emulation is so crappy. Hence, I will circle around some of these invisible objects to show that they do exist. Would you like it if I kept this in version 2, or would you prefer something different? EDIT: Oh yes, the 100% accuracy idea has been scrapped since I get Options. It's more like "Kill everything with as close to 100% accuracy as possible". -Josh

Did you know there was a secret exit teleporter in the Castlevania where Dracula lies? I found it by accident when I jumped up the platforms to defeat Dracula. It is located near the invisible stairs on a platform far right. You shouldn't miss it. I can't wait to see this run, since this game was difficult,

!!! Well then, THAT'S certainly a several-minute improvement for version 2. Thanks a lot! Hm, do you think there might be any others? The huge amount of backtracking is what makes this game so long and difficult... -Josh

... zim, you rock. That Castlevania exit led me to experiment with the other levels, and it turns out that there are also hidden exits in the Goonies and Moai stages. The former is in the lower-left corner of the room right before Mikey. As for the latter...after getting Moai, go back to the long hallway with the mechanical Moai and head right. Break the first set of blocks, and the teleporter will be on the ground just ahead. Again, much thanks! -Josh

Bwah. So are you gonna redo the whole run with these hidden exits included? Or finish up the one you were working on before starting v2? o.o

Nope, I'm going to finish this version. Just got done with the shooter level finally, time is 41:02. And I'm going to hold off on v2 until I am absolutely SURE that I know of all the hidden exits. They save a ton of time and energy (and sanity on my part =P), so obviously it's important to use all of them. -Josh
