Thanks for that. However I'm wondering about your preference. Do you have any opinion for it?

Well, you could go in order... that is, Galaxy 1 first.

I would also vote to start at the beginning, smg1.

Me and Yoshifan were supposed to do a TAS of that game, but we can't until a TAS Input for wii is released.

While we're here (and posting in this thread since it's equally applicable to both games), would the standard branch be with one or two players? In most two-player co-op games, the second playable character has just as much control as the first - he is a "full" character, capable of dying, slowing the other player down etc etc. In these games, the "co-star luma" is no such thing. It can never hinder the player, only help it by picking up star bits and coins and stunning enemies. In essence, all it ever does is make the game easier. Therefore I propose making one-player the main branch for the same reason that we play games on the hardest difficulty, and then I suspect that two-player runs will be too similar to warrant their own branch.

Yup I tried, you definitely need TAS Input.

Is there anyone doing something with this game? I know SMG2 has a WIP for it right now

The main motivational killer for the potential TASers is that Wiimotes don't sync so good.

Also, no TAS Input for wii, and RAM Values are per world...

I made a really quick test TAS of a single star, the dtm is about 1m30s long. I didn't get any desyncs so far.

The WIP for SMG2 didn't use a TAS input and I wouldn't think that any addresses were used/watched for it either.

There's no harm in trying. If it doesn't sync, oh well.

What's the fastest known 61-star Mario route? Does non-TAS potentially differ from a TAS run?

Seriously? Route 1 | Route 2 Route 1 is "mostly based on Yoshifan's 2:25 segmented run as Luigi. The stars are almost all the same." 2 Player Assistance is also Recommended.

From what I've read, not all Luigi stars are possible with Mario due to strategy limitations. I'd really like to see what an "optimal" TAS route is, if there's any "TAS-only" star theories, or something of the sort that I'm unaware of. How does another star bit collector help? Is that recommendation non-TAS only so you don't screw up collecting for Lumas? Or is it advantageous in a TAS situation?

I believe I've seen some tricks that can only be done with two players. Something about being able to force Mario to jump with P2? (I'm not the person to be talking about tricks in SMG games)

Anywhere it could save time, I'd assume. I don't think it'd be incorporated into any realtime routes due to requiring a second player, or at least a second Wiimote and some extreme dexterity.

Yeah, it looks like it can break jump height assumptions in a LOT of places. You'd need to check every single level.

The co-op jump is used extensively in the current any% WR by NEG_taro. Check it out in this Nico playlist. It's been a while since I tried it myself, but I believe you're supposed to point the P2 Wiimote at Mario, and then press A on both Wiimotes at the same time (within a few frames of each other). As you'll see in his camera, when he needs to do co-op jumps, NEG_taro actually uses his foot for one Wiimote (the one he uses just for pressing A, not for aiming). The co-op pointer is also able to stun enemies. See Good Egg 1's boulder planet, or Drip Drop's eels for good examples. It can also manipulate the bouncy plants like on final Bowser phase 2. --- Also, since the any% route and starbit collection were asked about earlier (something along those lines at least): My any% route's Hungry Luma stars are Sweet Sweet (Terrace), Sling Pod (Fountain), and Drip Drop (Kitchen). In my segmented Luigi any% run, these were around 33, 21, and 22 seconds respectively, from beginning of control to the star cutscene. These star times are easily some of the fastest in the game. The other Hungry Lumas are Bigmouth, Sand Spiral, Boo's Boneyard, and Snow Cap. Sand Spiral and Bigmouth are each 45-60 seconds from what I recall, and can't be sped up much to my knowledge. Boo's Boneyard and Snow Cap are at least as long, and they also require getting the Grand Star from the Engine Room, which takes a while due to the really long cutscene of the Garden opening (and I didn't think the Garden stars were short enough to make up that time). Some RTA players actually leave out Sling Pod and Drip Drop because they are hard to consistently get good times on, but they are excellent for segmented or TAS runs. (I'd love to see a Sling Pod TAS, by the way!) But even for an any% TAS, 3 Hungry Luma stars is still the maximum we'd probably see, for a couple of reasons. First, it takes a bit of time to get to the Hungry Lumas and feed them, offsetting the benefit you get from the short stars themselves. Second, every time you finish a level with star bits, you have the "You got some star bits!" dialog at the end of the level, which usually* wastes some time. (*After you finish a star, even if "You got a star!" is the only dialog present, the game actually makes you wait a couple of seconds before you can proceed to the Save prompt. So a couple of seconds of dialogs won't hurt you at all. But if your dialogs last longer than that, you will be wasting time. So if you get other dialogs like unlocking a new galaxy, a new storybook chapter, etc., a starbit dialog will hurt you more. For the same reason, you should usually try to finish with 0 coins if you can.) I might try to help fill out an (RTA) IL table for this game. Even if many of them would just be me cutting parts out of my segmented run, I guess that would help for convenient reference.

On a side note, is there an official timing method for individual level stars? For a TAS I've thought of using (first frame of star celebration)-(first non-white frame after cutscene of flying in)/60 unless there is already an existing method.
