What are you trying to do, exactly? If you are just recording your normal game play, you can start AVI dump at any time. If you are recording an AVI of a movie file, pause the emulator, start playback of the movie, then start the AVI dump.

On a side note, be sure that you have the appropriate video codecs installed, specifically, ffdshow. This should allow you to dump high quality AVIs, better than the standard codecs supplied with default Windows installations. I suggest using the lossless H.264 codec if you plan to process the video further. The Camstudio codec is also a good dumping codec if you wish to engage in further processing, but it is only really useful for if you plan to make High Definition videos.

If you are having issues playing back the movie, can you tell us what codec you are dumping the AVI to?

you do not need to do "record new movie" at all for AVI recording. "Record new movie" starts recording your input for later playback, and is totally unrelated to AVI recording. If you wish to make an AVI recording of an input movie, you will either have to start the movie playing first or set "Sync AVI with Movie" in tools->avi.

So when it asks me what i want to use to compress the file i use the ffdshow? (If i only want to view the video on my computer not upload to internet)

You want to configure ffdshow, basically, when you are asked to select a codec, click the configuration button and select H.264 lossless as the Encoder, this should allow for perfect image quality, since you don't want to put it on the Internet (YouTube dislikes H.264 lossless).

That ffdshow is outdated. The ffdshow you want is from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/FFDshow_download.htm

The official page for those builds is http://ffdshow-tryouts.sourceforge.net, and you can find the associated downloads at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/.
