You can submit your DSM movie files directly to De Hack Ed Microstorage. Not saying that youtube is not appreciated but this saves a lot of encoding and uploading time. Also the ones who have the ROM do not need to stream the video.

how does that site exactly work? I think if I'll upload the dsm there it'll be when I complete the TAS, with the full vid though there might be problems.. at the end of M3 the .dsm file seems to desync for some reason, I still don't know how I was able to record the video... so that would be a problem when uploading it

The De Hack Ed Microstorage is for hosting WIPs and such files. So post whatever DSMs you wish. For the desync I have no idea, I never TASed anything DS.

Is also helpful to upload the DSM file as backup & to let others to examine the run and discuss possible improvements. (Though I know you discuss it on the WWN community...) So Alaktorn, are you still having desynchs? Or were you able to fix it with what we discussed over MSN? BTW, now that Alaktorn made the topic, I was wondering, since this run needs to start from SRAM (because of the skills he needs for the run), if you were to submit it here, do you need to prove how you created the file?

Wow, you have my respect. It's easy to TAS a Jump'N'Run, but Strategy games take much more effort as you need to plan everything perfect from the beginning.

while there is strategy of my own in this run, the whole Advance Wars community is helping in that regard, so I can't take full credits M8 should come later today edit: beautiful, Desmume is crashing whenever I load a state while playing a movie...

I've fixed it and did one more map: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcCMwWsNA44 really boring due to all the Silos AI launches, the TAS will probably die here because we have no idea of a strategy for the next map

Nice to see a new map done, to bad to hear that you'll stop because of the lack of a good strat. I know that you need lots of counters, so is the most annoying map to deal with, but you can just aim for an ok time for the moment, so that a full run is completed, you know.

I feel trashed after 4 or 5 hours testing strategies and TASing, but I've passed the biggest hurdle in this TAS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIydgdgN64s what's left is just to finish it up edit: oh god I think I failed the encode, it's sped up >_< can someone tell me how to make decent enough quality vids without them having a 100+MB size? is it impossible? I tried to lower the quality a lot but it's still 150MB, 40 minutes to upload on YT :/ edit2: LMAO. STL just noticed that we could end the day and let AI suicide, getting a faster win edit3: saved 14 frames removed the vid, currently uploading the improvement

TASing this game is such a pain in the ass, I have to plan what things to do so that the cursor doesn't end up 1 square away of the next target, and the day ends on top of the target I'll have to tap first next turn… I'm always busy lately and when I'm not I'm tired, trying to TAS M10 while tired was such a mistake, overseeing things and forgetting to do actions… I've TAS'd the first day 3 times and I'll have to TAS it again… sorry for the useless post, just wanted to let it out… omfg have to reTAS for the 4th time / or maybe not, I lose 2 frames but those are unavoidable… / ok wat you can tap the APC with 1 frame wait after loading, didn't know that, that makes this strategy lose no frames, but makes the TAS as a whole fail because I've always waited more frames… oh well

M10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3S6q4tpZQM edit: done M11 in 13", only 1" improvement over human record strangely, I thought at least 2, final time: 2:28, 32 frames away from 2:27 (human record: 3:16 by SwifTy) 6049 rerecords total, that's much less than I thought I'd make M11: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbgIEIQFRi4 edit2: just gave M1 a go for single record, got 206 frames (saves as 3 seconds), I know of another guy who got 3" with TAS but I don't know the exact frames, human record is 4" tied between SwifTy and Starkiller I believe edit3: now tied by myself too, also found out that I can save 19 frames on my TAS by starting the map in the 2nd Wave of Champion Course instead of Basic Course

standalone map record: Fog Hunter 9" (578 in-game timer frames) 1" improvement over human record tied between SwifTy, Starkiller, ALAKTORN (me), STL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJc0hWO9HlQ should be maxed me and STL might plan on doing a TASVideos.org-friendly Campaign TAS

MY TAS IS SHIT OH YEAH STL figured out a few things that make my TAS completely useless, ie, completely new strategy, also, turning Music OFF makes the "DAY" sign appear sooner (don't ask me why) wasting less time. This obviously means that a TAS should either start with Music OFF SRAM or turn Music OFF in the middle of the first map

just thought of something, considering the above post, if I were to make an AWDS Campaign TAS, should I turn off music? it would make the movie faster, but probably more boring to watch, so my take is a speed/entertainment trade-off and use music what do you think?

In general, I would prefer to see runs with music on. Theoretically many games may lag less without music on, but I'd rather not see runs on the site turning off music for minimal gains. Since this is a short time trial based mode focused on getting low times, maybe it is okay. How long is the total run speculated to be? 10+ minutes with no music would get pretty bland. Does it affect in-game time as well as real time? EDIT: Were you planning on submitting the time trial mode?

I don't know of any other instance where turning off music saves time. I think that the discovery is too curious to not take advantage of it, but take into account that I think like a speedrunner and dislike speed/entertainment trade-offs, which isn't the case for most TASers.

I appreciate the interest, but can't answer your questions precisely as I haven't had the time to test the Music OFF thing a lot yet, I just got told by STL it saves 32 frames for each "DAY" sign on our turns from D2 on, D1 is the same edit: confirmed that it saves for AI's "DAY" sign the same way as ours it does affect in-game time, yes edit: I read this wrong, it also saves real time so yes to both I wasn't planning on submitting it at first, since my first TAS was kind of a test run (the strategy wasn't final yet, and got completely overhauled now), but with the new knowledge I can plan a TAS to then be submitted; keep in mind that this TAS goes for in-game time, not real time like is usual for TASVideos, so I don't know if it can even be accepted the new Time Survival target time is sub 2:00 (STL estimates exactly tying that time), I don't know about real time (you can kind of compare it to the current TAS I guess) edit: 32 frames gained at the end of the map too, but real time only

You can submit any category for a run you want here, especially if you justify yourself. Explain in your submission message why in-game time is a better or more interesting goal than realtime, and you're unlikely to have problems. (You should set the category name to "in-game time" when you submit, so people know which goal you're aiming for.) As for the music, leaving it on is likely better for entertainment purposes (again, mark this as a tradeoff). I take it that the game desynchs if you change the music status but otherwise keep everything the same? (If not, you could encode it both ways round.)

it would desync, yeah, since music off saves a lot of frames key presses would be widely different by the way, music off is estimated to save 17 in-game time seconds for Time Survival I'm gonna make a new M11 standalone TAS with music off and updated strategy to match the gain, a demo of what it would be like I guess? nvm what I wrote here before, I was drunk or something, edited: oh, I'm not sure my reason to go for real-time is good: it's simply because human competition is based on that, and it's more interesting for the competitors (one of them being myself)
