You probably want to use the Japanese version if you want to use the Yoshi ceiling glitch. The Sirena Beach cleaning emulation glitch hasn't been fixed yet. ReneBalow was planning to start on this game after that it was fixed. This is the latest real-time speedrun for this game, and I assume it has the latest tricks (somehow batora's TAS is still faster though).

Can someone more familiar with speed running this game go ahead and list all of the major tricks/skips/sequence breaks? That would be extremely helpful to us. It would also be great if someone used to memory address-locating could find the following addresses: - Mario's facing angle (what direction Mario is facing) - Mario's movement angle (what direction the stick is being held) - X position - Y position - Z position - Mario's speed value Thanks to anyone willing to help us get started!
Can someone also list the pros/cons of using U vs J?

All I know is that you can clip through ceilings with Yoshi on J, and the infinite flutter glitch only works on U. According to MUGG's post that jlun2 linked to, an any% should use J if it needs to clip through ceilings. If it matters, there are less sound effects and voice clips in J, and more people will understand the English text in U than the Japanese text in J. What about the Sirena Beach episode 6 emulation glitch? Won't that stop your run from getting accepted?

The emulation glitch in sirena 6 isn't fixed yet, so probably it's a good idea to wait some more. Renebalow, Wak(?), and me wanted to start working on the any% eventually, maybe we could make this a collaboration work (everyone works on level strats on his own and presents it to the others or something). The U version should be used since the yoshi ceiling glitch won't be used in the any% run. The talk to girl glitch in pianta 2 seems to work on all versions but only sometimes... I don't know what conditions need to be met for this. TAS by batora: http://www.youtube.com/user/MarioSunshineTAS

How is batora's TAS still so much faster than the fastest real-time speedrun of this game (by over 4 minutes)?

GLITCH HUNTING: SIRENA1: pianta1-style pause trick, tried to use it in sirena1 but it saves/wastes 0 frames. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTgc8c_w6TE ----- There's a cutscene trick I haven't posted about yet. Just study this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7CAzJl0RXU Doing this in sirena1: http://i.imgur.com/207Aq.jpg It can also be done at gelato2, bianco1 (goop piranha defeated cutscene), and possibly more instances. ----- RICCO2: You can skip talking to the guy in the cave in ricco2, but the timer for the race doesn't start so you're forced to talk to him. I also noticed that pausing the game makes the timer run for an additional frame so you get worse times. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwJUiSGeBbY ----- GELATO2: http://youtu.be/bP4KezydQyg Cutscene trick on mirror #2 (I name mirrors based on how many enemies are on them) notes: - when a cutscene gets started after each mirror, Mario is placed in a predetermined location. If you do mirror #3 first, he's placed in a location where he's on the floor, already standing. - if you do mirrors in order #3 #2 #1, he gets placed in a different place after #1 than if you had done #1 first. The cutscene trick makes Mario carry over momentum into a cutscene. If Mario is already standing (he's placed in a location where he's already on the floor), he can only move forward or backward. If he's placed in a location in the air, he can move wherever you want - just jump, walk, dive into whichever direction you want. ----- GELATO3: Pausing just when the shine is about to appear delays the appearance by a few seconds. Can be done repeatedly. Probably there's a framerule address running through 256 frames, looping and trying to make the shine appear when it reaches zero. Doing the pause trick in Pianta1 apparently sets this address to zero instantly ?

Just for future reference, I want to note that in a 120 shines TAS it's probably the best to get the shine under the bell tower (by fruit clipping) just after spraying the goop piranha in the plaza for the third time. The cutscene where the statue rises plays just thereafter without any complications.

Could ReneBalow's Gelato Beach 1 be improved by using your Delfino Plaza cutscene waterslide trick to get closer to the sand castle during the cutscene?

No, you don't get placed into a new location during that cutscene.

The Sirena Beach glitch was fixed by Dolphin revision 3.0-439! Considering this was the only thing holding people back from making a TAS, this is a historic development! Unfortunately, that revision doesn't include the incredibly helpful "more-save-fixes" or "TAS-input" changes, so we'll have to wait for everything to be merged together before TASing on this game can start.

That would help too. Before the input backshifting fix and nitsuja's save fixes, I remember MUGG saying how difficult (an understatement, I know) TASing this game was. It's still hard to avoid desyncs in this game even with the TAS-input revision, so hopefully some game-specific fixes will merge with this Sirena Beach fix and the other important changes to make a revision perfect for running this game.

There's no conflicts with the more-save-fixes branch, so merging that fix into it is a 5 second job.

Yeah, MUGG, Rene, and myself (probably others too) have all had issues with getting SMS to playback correctly since Dolphin TASing improved a little over a year ago. I wonder why SMS has so many more problems.

Hopefully now someone working on Dolphin can merge the latest revision (3.0-441) with "more-save-fixes", if it's that easy to do. Then we'll have an official revision that's perfect for SMS TASing! (Well, except for the TAS input improvements.)

i'll do it later if there no conflicts, which i don't think there are.

I assume you will also include the FifoBusy branch?

Sure. Was 2 small merge conflicts between master and save-fixes, but they were easily fixed. I'm compiling it now, i'll post to the dolphin thread when finished.

I PM'd Renebalow with this, but I thought I'd post it here too. Could skipping Yoshi in Delfino plaza be faster by doing Sirena early? Route idea: Pianta raise the statue to make Sirena loading zone appear Sirena early (7 times) Bianco Gelato Ricco Pinna Noki Previous route: Pianta Bianco Gelato Ricco Pinna Sirena (have to unlock yoshi in plaza which takes about 10~15 seconds) Noki

I recall that NintendoG8mer "proved" that Corona Mountain isn't able to be entered early, but can someone double check now that Dolphin emulates SMS better? I doubt it will change anything, but it would still be a good idea to find out.
