For judges: You must run the game with TAS with your graphics card set to high performance, otherwise the textures of the paper characters will be broken, the settings in sync settings have nothing to do with this.
To do this for fixing, perform this steps:
  • Go to settings in windows, not BizHawk
  • Go to System -> Display -> Graphics
  • Click on the first blue box called "Need a desktop application?" (I'm not sure how it sounds more precisely in the English version.)
  • Search for EmuHawk.exe (it must be 2.11 for this game) and select it.
  • Click on the BizHawk window and select High Performance in GPU Processor Preference.

Game objectives

  • Emulator: BizHawk 2.11
  • Game version: Japan (0004000000132600_v00.trim.3ds (Mario & Luigi RPG - Paper Mario MIX (Japan).3ds format works too)
  • Using glitches
  • Easy Mode
  • RNG manipulation
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, known in Europe and Australia as Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. and Mario & Luigi RPG: Paper Mario MIX in Japan and Korea released in 2015, it is the fifth instalment in the Mario & Luigi series released on the 3DS, and serves as a crossover between the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario series, the latter being a cross-genre series developed by Intelligent Systems. In Paper Jam, Luigi accidentally opens a book containing the Paper Mario universe, causing all of its contents to spread into the Mushroom Kingdom; Mario and Luigi, with the help of the befriended Paper Mario, venture to save both Princess Peach universe variants from Bowser, who has teamed up with his paper counterpart as well.
Compared to other games in the Mario & Luigi series, Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario decide to break all possible laws of physics and break the fourth wall through powerful glitches that allow us to beat the game much faster.
Compared to previous submissions from Mario & Luigi, here we will discuss glitches rather than battles. We will only go into two tutorial battles, I will discuss the next two in one section, and the rest of the battles are just glitches, game over, BOSS defeated.

RNG manipulation

  • In this game we manipulate the RNG to get a better layout of the enemies and their attacks, drops and lucky hits, In this game, there are several methods we can use as manipulation:
  • Performing different attacks
  • How many damage points do we deal, e.g. when using Drill Shell
  • Being iddle in areas with NPCs/enemies (Even during events)
  • Jumping as Paper Mario in the overworld
  • Walk and stop constantly (with Paper Mario)

Peach's Castle

  • In the Toad search section, we must find them all to continue the game. Unfortunately, because the game does not allow us to go to certain locations, let alone leave the castle using OoB, we must complete this section before performing OoB.

OoB Glitch

  • In this game, the developers left many wall collisions that we can exploit to skip most of the game if we make a few moves in specific directions. Mario will collide with the wall, allowing us to pass OoB, but that's not all, we also have to push Luigi closer to the wall so that we can also clip him into the walls. Unfortunately, Paper Mario cannot enter some walls, so we have to make moves to force the game to separate Mario and Luigi from Paper Mario. We also have to be careful when passing through, because one wrong move and the game will teleport Paper Mario to a point where we would not want to be teleported.

Easy Mode

  • This game also features Easy Mode, which increases the strength of our companions during battles. Compared to other games, we only use it in Any% for the first 4 battles so that we can get through them faster. In Any%, there is no real benefit to using it more often.

Paper Goombas

  • I manipulate the RNG by waiting to crumple one Paper Goomba to avoid its attack.
  • With a double jump, Great saves 14 frames over Excellent, but unfortunately Excellent is required to get a crumple on Paper enemies.

Goombas

  • Just jump, we get Great to save frames

Bare Boots DX

  • These boots can normally be obtained after completing Bowser's Castle, as the scattered passages unlock access to the boots. However, thanks to the OoB glitch, we can obtain them much earlier. These boots work in such a way that if we are not wearing any gear, i.e. trousers, gloves or accessories, they increase the damage for jump attacks.

Paper Goombas & Goombas (Toad Mission)

  • I put on Bare Boots DX and take off my trousers to attack the Goombas with full damage. I manipulate the RNG to get 2 Goombas and 2 Paper Goombas so that we can defeat them with just a jump attack.

Dash Socks

  • In Toad Mission, I get Dash Socks from Paper Toads, which allows me to move much faster and saves a lot of time.

Trio Hammer

  • We learn this skill because it is needed later on. At first, after a long time, it may seem useless, but this skill is needed in one place because it is blocked behind it.

Saving & Reset

  • In this game, we can save the game at certain points to load. After saving, we reset the game and load the save file. We can use this to glitch the game in certain cases, such as Fast forward storage, which I will explain in the following sections.
  • Information: For 3DS, if we save the game, we have to reset 1 frame later or 2 frames at 30 FPS because performing a frame-perfect reset causes save corruption or other side effects. In this case, the game could not render everything, literally everything across the map, textures and characters.

Wall collisions

  • In Toad Village, we make another clip using Paper Mario and leave the location without Mario and Luigi. When we return to this point, the game will take us to the location where we loaded, and it will also disable the walls and hills that we can walk into. The only way to fix this is to interact with Lakitu, which will get rid of this effect. This way, we skip most of the game and can move on to Mouth Brrr faster.

Trio Drill & Fast Forward storage glitch

  • These two parts require explanation in one section because they are related to each other.
  • We learn this skill to use it in later sections, allowing us to dig into the ground and get to certain places or collect beans and coins from the ground.
  • There are several other ways to perform the fast forward storage glitch: enter another location and activate the event that triggers fast forward at the same time, enter the location and if the event is in the place where the location trigger is, or save & load, this allows you to use fast forward during gameplay as long as you do not enter the event or interact with something that also triggers fast forward.
  • During fast forward, the trio drill has various side effects, allowing us to glitch, as seen in Gloomy Woods, clip through walls, and use this to go Out of Bounds to reach locations that are not yet accessible to us.
  • Info, this glitch causes the music from the Kamek event to play continuously regardless of what we do, unless we go to the arcade.

Toad Mission Storage Glitch

  • This glitch is based on that if we enter Toad Mission, we clip through the collision, we can go to the trigger of a location we don't have access to, there are no protections against this, and we can simply exit Toad Mission from the location, well, not quite, because then Toad Mission is kept and the game works as if we weren't in it, which allows for another glitch that I will explain in the next part.

Instant Battle Glitch

  • Ah, this famous glitch, the most broken of them all, is combined with the Toad Mission Storage Glitch. If we cause a game over on the bosses, the game gives you the option to restart or exit to the main screen. Selecting the option to exit to the main screen during the glitch causes the game to not know what to do in this case and loads the scene where the boss is defeated and continues the game as if nothing had happened. With normal enemies, this sometimes causes us to see nothing or causes the game to freeze, but we will come to that in a moment.

Arcade

  • We have to go there to get rid of the Toad Mission Storage Glitch and the music to perform another fast forward storage glitch in Neo Bowser's Castle. The arcade will also allow you to save the game, which is a plus in this part.
  • We must also eliminate this because if we interact with Lakitu during this glitch, the game will stop working entirely.

Trio Grab

  • This ability is only acquired in Twinsy Tropics Dungeon, but thanks to glitching, we can obtain it without going there. It allows us to reach hard-to-reach places and unlock paths and shortcuts that were previously blocked, as well as easily exit OoB. However, if we disable wall collisions, we can use this to fall or move up or down, which is helpful in places where we need it.
  • Info: buttons are not detected by Hammer if you use fast forward. I leave it on 4 frames after pressing A so that the game can detect them.

Trio Glider

  • We can get this skill in Bowser's Castle (not Neo Bowser's Castle, of course), which lets us fly and go up a bit three times. Fast forward also has a side effect where the game raises us even higher at the right moment when we press the button.
  • In Neo Bowser's Castle, I use this on the bridge to get to the other side. After entering the location with Kameks, the game loads the progress right there and gets rid of the events that trigger the progress in Neo Bowser's Castle. Unfortunately, this bridge must be recovered after defeating Papercraft Bowser, which means that when we climb to the top, the bridge collision does not load and does not exist, so we have to fly to get to the other side.
  • The second location is simply going there and unlocking the path, there is no glitch to discuss there.

Kameks

  • Same as before, we do the Toad Mission Storage Glitch, but now from Fly Guy Flyby, then we go to Kameks and defeat them with this glitch.
  • For judges: Generally, after Kameks, you can proceed to the next location where the enemy rush is, but it's not as easy as it seems if you're playing on an emulator. Getting a miss from any enemies works fine, as shown later in the TAS video. If you noticed that instead of continuing, I exit Toad Mission and do another mission, unfortunately, Fly Guy Flyby on the console in Neo Bowser's Castle, if we get a miss from normal enemies, it crashes the game and displays an error. Kameks do not crash after game over, the emulator does not detect this error and does not crash. Using this issue would be using an emulation error, which is not allowed. This is one of the reasons why I decided to do it this way and not differently. The Toad Mission I took later does not cause a crash from enemies, and I can safely proceed by playing this Toad Mission.

Enemy Rush

  • I manipulate the RNG by waiting three times for normal enemies to give good patterns so that I can get a game over faster.
I don't really need to explain the rest, Bowsers is the same, so it's not interesting.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Can't seem to figure out why I'm de-syncing. I'm going to pass this off to someone else to figure out.

fsvgm777: Replacing movie file with a 35 frame improvement.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Thank you fsvgm777 for the sync. I had already looked at this run and it looks good, with the run being around 5 minutes faster than the WR.
Accepting to "Standard".
