The Legendary Axe is about a man, his axe, an evil cult leader, and its human sacrifice. your goal in this game is to rescue your childhood friend Flare from the evil Jagu. In normal play this game requires careful strategy such as waiting for the right timing or jumping backwards over fireballs. But in this video its more about hacking relentlessly at the enemies.
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Manipulates luck
  • Used mednafen-rerecording-138
In this game you move slightly faster when jumping then when walking so I tried to stay in the air when moving, of course that wasn't always possible. At the end of every level there is a health count down and charge. it takes 12 frames for each health bar to drain so I try and have it near empty at the end of the level. I can usually prevent the damage stun by being in an upward motion of my jump when getting hit. Also by jumping off vines with the right timing I could get a lot of speed and keep it by jumping on the frame I land.

Power ups

-Wings: These allow you to attack more frequently with the maximum of 2 you can attack about once every
14 frames.
-Crowns: These make your attacks more powerful after waiting for your axe power to charge up. You lose charge and have to wait again after every swing. If you miss one there will usually be an extra one sometime in the next zone.

Axe power levels

Waiting different amounts of time will make your attacks have varying strengths with the max depending on how many crowns you have. although I'm not sure about the exact damages and the time it takes might be off by a frame or two, these are the times it takes to charge and the amount of damage it does.
Empty bar, no crowns: 14 frames with two wings (with 0 its ~25-30 frames) Base damage. Quarter bar, 1 crown: 31 frames, 2x damage. Half bar, 2 crowns: 79 frames, 3x damage 3/4ths bar, 3 crowns 151 frames, 4x damage Full bar, 4 crowns 284 frames (including freeze time) 16x damage

Level comments

Zone 1 Nothing special, getting the wings and crown from the spider isn't worth the extra time it takes to kill him. I emptied my life on the bears. Could have been about 30 frames faster by avoiding some lengthy damage on the bears, but I couldn't get it to sync up. I have to wait for the level complete music to finish before the level loads out so not being as far to the right as possible didn't waste any time.
Zone 2 Man this level is laggy as hell, I try and kill a lot of enemies to avoid some lag, I think I may have overestimated the usefulness of killing enemies in later levels though as it seems simply swinging your axe causes a frame of lag I didn't realize this until just at the end of the game though. I let the first boulder hit me so that I can jump through it and attack the second one sooner. near the end of the level is the first time I use the vine swing glitch. I probably could have taken some more damage earlier in the level.
Zone 3 After grabbing my second set of wings the fastest way to kill enemies is to attack as fast as possible. The reason why I took the lower path was to avoid the rock enemies above. I think I could have taken a bit of damage from the birds in 3A. In 3B there is a very impressive use of swinging vines. I skip the lengthy scene that gives you a crown.
Zone 4 A Cavemen quickly defeated.
B I kill a moth waiting for my 3rd crown to spawn. I take so much damage here I have to carefully avoid damage at the end in order to not get killed. At one point the end was so laggy it was literally impossible to make it across a gap with out killing some enemies.
C I waste a bit of time to manipulate an idol into being a crown giving me full power. At 16 times the damage of an empty bar a full charge is very useful against bosses, but it causes a half second of freezetime so I have to avoid using it unnecesarily. I noticed destroying those three idols at the end caused the explosion to take longer. The walk to the end of the level is so long that the music ends before I get there so I have to be on the far right side of the screen.
Zone 5 This zone with its 23 levels of maze takes up about half the movie. I don't have to worry about having high health at the end of the zone, but I'm already out of health by the entrance and have to do lower jumps to avoid the bats in 5A. Jumping close to the doors means he doesn't have to walk as far for the door to start closing.
C I waste a few frames to manipulate a small health into a medium health, I could have made the next small health medium as well with a few more frames.
T I waste some health and about 30 frames to manipulate a large health in 5U.
Zone 6 I extended the input and deleyed the ending by about 3 frames for a victory dance and to make it to the right side of the screen.
the last hit is at frame 49349 and flare is cut down at frame 49985.

mmbossman: I'm going to go ahead and reject this. The voter opinion seems to be that this game/run is mediocre at best, and two months on the workbench has failed to garner a lot of interest. Better luck on your next run!
