I need to buy a DVD burner. I really like the company LG, so this one caught my eye. Then i noticed that this one is also the cheapest available at the futureshop.ca website. http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10074612&catid=10475 So while I love LG, i dont wanna buy something that's missing a feature. I dont know shit about DVD burners though, so.... Advice?

In terms of hardware, they're mostly the same. This one burns all the formats, is does dual layer, and the speed seems reasonable. I'd buy it. You want to check out what the software is capable of. The DVD burner itself doesn't give a damn about MPEG2 or operating systems. Ensure you can burn movies in DVD Video format if that's what you want, and do so in good quality. The site looks okay for me, but I'm not overly picky.

Recent BenQ models (DW1640, which I happily use, and DW1655) generally are superb. But yeah, the differences really are rather subtle, and heavily dependant on the firmwares and disc burning software. The drive you chose seems okay to me, but I don't know a thing about it (recent LG models are good, though). You may want to check some reviews on it if you're unsure.

Hmm, I have an LG burner. It's more then 1 year old and my friends and I burn DVD's almost everyday. Until now it's doing just fine.

I just got a Pioneer DVR-111D, only burned one disk with it so far, but it was cheap as hell. I burned the SDA Resident Evil 4 speedrun as DVD-video, with each chapter as a separate video, and it works just fine.

I personally use and LOVE Plextor. Best burners I've ever had.

Plextor has always had the reputation of making the best CD/DVD drives and burners. They are somewhat expensive. I got a Plextor IDE DVD-ROM and SATA DVD burner. While the DVD-ROM (PX-130A) still works fantastic, the DVD burner (PX-712SA) won't burn DVDs anymore, only CDs. No DVD burners from Plextor for me anymore: If something costs ~120€ it has got to work perfectly.

FYI, Plextor frequently uses other companies successful hardware solutions and sell them under the expensive brand. For example, Plextor PX-740A is in fact nothing more (literally) than BenQ DW1640 — just with different firmware, retail package, and a price at least twice as high.
