The one substantial difference from the previous run is that only mandatory battles are fought -- there is not one battle engaged in which is not required to complete the game. This strikes out the Shyster battles in Mushroom Kingdom (which saved approximately 5 minutes), and the Culex fight (which saved about 7 minutes). Consequentially, I was forced to restrategize the Mack fight (it is noticeably longer than before) and all fights after Nimbus Castle -- this is due to the lower levels and the absence of the Quartz Charm and Lazy Shell, both of which helped immensely in the previous run. Many of the lost time in these battles was cumulative in the end, probably losing me about 2 minutes total when compared to the published run.
A most noteworthy change from this run is the employment of the Power Blast item, bought with 5 Frog Coins from Tadpole Pond. Because of the deficit of Frog Coins come Exp.Booster time, I was forced to hold out until after Yaridovich before I could buy it (no huge loss there anyways). The Croco (both times), Punchinello, Johnny, Birdo, and Valentina fights are all faster (and maybe even Domino/Cloaker, but I didn't check).
The biggest loss of time was in the Smithy Factory fights, particularly the final area. I just couldn't find any better strategies what without the Quartz Charm and the strong Lazy Shell weapon. Thankfully the Power Blast kept me from wasting too much time otherwise. The 2nd Smithy Battle turned out well, since he held out rather long before even transforming the 1st. He also gratuitously transformed into Magic Head (unlike last time, where he remained Tank Head until Treasure Head) allowing me to deliver fast powerful hits (Magic Head has very bad physical defense) several times before changing into Treasure Head.
I'm a little disappointed, since I was hoping to break the 2:40 mark, and the Factory battles are a little unpleasant to watch compared to before. Still, I think the game can probably be beaten in under this time and unless there is some glitch no one is aware of, impossible to complete under 2:35 (just pulling it out of thin air...)

He got the Rock Candy somewhere en route to Booster's Tower if I'm not mistaken.

Gonna have to vote meh for this run; sorry, mate. While I have no doubt that this run is perfectly played, I kind of liked your old version better when Mario gets to kick ass with the more powerful weapons. Good work anyway spezz!

When you were fighting the shoguns, you used Geno to defend before having Mario use his hammer. Why didn't you make Mario have the highest speed (either equipping Zoom shoes on Mario or lowering Geno's speed)? Wouldn't it be faster that way? Also during the Czar Dragon battle, I noticed that you used an Ice Bomb before using a Power Blast. Why did you do this?

Spezzafer pretty much disappeared from this forum, much to our disappointment.

How much time would it take to change equipments? If its only one time where speeds would need to be adjusted, I think it sounds plausible what has been done... I'm downloading the video again to see if the same comment I had from the first one I saw applies here... EDIT: OK, my two things: 1) I'm impressed you defeated the Hammer Bros. at level 1... which is something that would be very difficult if you were playing on a real console ^^ 2) Too much rock candy abuse near the end... I probably like watching 100x jumps from Mario instead, but... *shrugs* BTW, how do you get rock candy's damage to do 300 to all instead of 200? I don't remember... (yea, I feel stupid for asking)

It's not that difficult. Just don't screw up a timed block and use your mushrooms when your HP is low, and you'd do just fine. Employing the same tactics to take down the Hammer Bros. as in the TAS also helps.

Agreed.

I might be wrong on this, but I believe it has to do with Koopa's attack stat being higher than the other characters. So while everyone else is dishing out 200 damage, he's pulling out 300. Least, that's what I gathered from playing the game all those years ago.

Beating hammer brothers is easy if you use the method he did - jump on them each once, instead of focusing on the first one - this is because once the first one is gone, the second will use Valor Up, and your attacks will do little damage. The rock candy's 300 dmg doesn't have to do with Bowser's stats; rock candy always does 200, unless you use a power boost, which he did. Overall, very good video, though I'm wondering about a few things: If there's a way to get around that weird stopping glitch in Land's End (the one where, if you level up twice after contacting a Geckit with a star, your character pauses for a second). I hate it, personally. After doing 600 dmg to the Axems with 2 rock candies, did you need mario's timed hit? would a regular attack have done 200? i'm guessing it would not have, but just maybe... I also am clueless about the Masher's abilities - sometimes it does massive damage for me, sometimes it's pathetic. Also, to the guy who mentioned pressing X with perfect timing for freebies: I'm not sure this is correct, as I've gotten freebies without pressing a single button.

Masher has a high damage varience as compared to most weapons of the game. Good thing about a TAS is you can do massive damage every time. If this is the case there may also be an element of luck involved in getting a freebie. However, you can force it with a timed hit.

see i always wondered, because for years (yes, i play this game every year) i was timing X, but i was never sure, and then i think (now i'm skeptical) i got one without pressing anything...my gf said she pressed A for freebies... if it is possible to force (and not luck manip.), someone should make a list of the timings

not too sure if anybody is lurking here anymore, but while i'm asking questions, is there a surefire way to get lucky challenges correctly? following yoshi always leads to the middle as far as i can tell...

If you watch it on frame advance you can see that the eggs spin in a "third dimension" of sorts, rotating behind each other. I was confused by that as well.
