Is there an option somewhere in PHPbb that allows you to customize which forum topics are shown when logged in? (I'm guessing "no", but.... leap of faith!!!)

you could use the "save opened tabs" tool in firefox. it will save them in a directory in your bookmarks, on top of which a link will be added : "open all those links into tabs". that way you could easily save&load whatever pages or topics you would want to have each time. pretty neat feature. hope that helps.

if you just wanted to ignore specific forums, lacking the power to ignore them with your brain, you might as well use a custom stylesheet to turn them invisible.

How would I use css to alter the forums page while still retaining the "checks for new posts" quality? I tried to save the page, and edit it to remove links to some forums that I don't care about, then when I access this page, it doesn't tell me whether the posts were new because all that's handled in php, not html. Is this not a problem if css is used? If so, I guess I'll need to learn some css.

most modern browsers allow you to use your own style sheet for web sites. That way you can override the default way the site looks. For example, you could increase the font size, you could remove or change annoying colors, kill background images for faster loading times. I've used it to increase the size of the phpBB text-box when posting, so it'll take up more than 2.6% or 7% of my screen. You're still loading the same page as before, it's just displayed differently. find a good descriptor for the forums you wish to turn invisible, and set them to display:none; or visibility:hidden; - whatever destroys the layout less.
