i was just wondering, around when did people start doing this speedruns and time attacks and things like that? Not just the videos on the internet, but without recording them. Was it recently or some time ago?

I think it probably really happened in the golden age of emulation, since you need emulator tools do make these things possible. But I am no expert, we need Bisqwit himself to come and talk about it.

The rerecording ones startes with morimoto's smb3. The original ones have been around a while, but the noteable ones that have been around a while are quake, doom, and metroid.

He meant not just tool assisted.(edit- directed to 12motion) I wouldn't be surprised if speedrun competition(since you said not just on the internet) predated nintendo, but I'm sure that's when it flourished. Gertrude's secret speed run, anybody?

Oh well I suppose people could have been doing speed runs forever. But I really think it got big with emulators, because it gives you a quick way to record and show off. Otherwise if I just TORE UP mario 2 one day at my house, no one would have known you know? So I still stand by my comment, it got big, when emulation got big. But I don't doubt that people did it. We all should know about the guy that played the perfect pacman games, and stuff. Video game competitions have been around since arcades, but speed runs seems like it's something you need to record you know?

Well like I say, there were speed runs back when video games were made. But it really got big and popular with emulators.

Sorry 12Motion, I think you are wrong. Speed running was huge already in Doom days. Besides, almost noone uses emulators for speed running, they use original consoles and vcrs. Tool-assisted speed runs though, obviously didn't predate emulators.

Well alright, I admit defeat. I didn't really think about PCs at all... I suppose I have heard of Marathon speedruns. Alright There has always been speed running. Where ever there was a game that could be run, someone ran it!

SMB3 was not Morimoto's first movie. Morimoto had made a couple of movies in April 2004 already. SMB3 came in November. Also, the rerecording feature in Famtasia existed since April 2000, and I'm certain that it wasn't just unused for 4 years. As for speedruns, competitive video gaming has probably existed since the first video games were made.

Truncated: Nope, tool-assisted runs actually began with Doom. Some people from the speedrunning community hacked into the games to add slow-motion and other things. This was done solely because they were interested in seeing what the best possible times were; entertainment was not ever considered (although these movies do tend to be rather entertaining). -Josh
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice
