Bisqwit: I'm submitting this movie on the behalf of Pom.
This is a new record of Super Mario Bros, made in VirtuaNES but converted to FCEU's FCM format.
How it compares to existing movies:
which movie Input-end at frame# Axe hit at frame #
Pom's previous movie 17978* 18000*
Phil's unpublished movie 17979 17997
This movie 17974 17996
(*= Comparable timing. Subtract 2 frames to get Famtasia timing.)
(Input-end refers to the frame when all buttons are released, not movie-end.)
It was made by Pom soon after he discovered about Phil's unpublished movie, but Pom thought the improvement is too small to be worth anything. However, apparently his opinion changed :)
Note: You may notice that some levels are not played as fast as they could be. This is because of the 21-frame rule inherent in the Super Mario Bros game. The rule means that completion times of all levels (except the last one) are rounded up to the next 21-frame boundary, regardless of the exact time.

Omniswarrior, please try to use better grammar. It's rather annoying reading that. As for the video at hand... good job! I was impressed.

Dear badly spelling fellow from unknown country, there are a few problems in your request: - I don't have Super Mario DX. (In fact, I have never seen that game.) - Even if I had its ROM, I couldn't make movies for it because Visual Boy Advance doesn't behave nicely at me. - I am not the only person who can try it. I wasn't joking when I said "try it yourself". Go and try it! If you fail, try again. Challenge the game, probe and learn. - You have exhausted your quota for wishes. Spell properly to replenish it.

I was surprised that omniswarrior didn't beg for the Super Mario Bros. DX ROM so he could try the tricks...

Sorry about the quality. The red route is the route taken. The green one is what should be done. I know about the 21-frame rule, but this might save more than 21. It does seem pretty serious. Even if it is irrelevant, it could still be used to smash a goomba or two and get a few more points by the end of the run. Just something bugging me. Also, what about that point around 3:10 into the run where you slow down to bounce off a koopa and under a brick? Shouldn't you jump over the bricks and speed up a little?

Explain why we should use the green route. Because for me it's alot more slower.

I wondered this too, but I don't know SMB mechanics at all. It seems like both can move to the right at top speed, but the lower path that is taken pauses forward movement slightly to do the through-the-wall trick. Is it slower to jump high, or something like that?

I thought the trick was already explained. Bisqwit, it's your duty. :P

IIRC: The lower route is taken because it's because it's the fastest way to fool the game into choosing the wrong exit for the pipe (warp zone instead of bonus room). That's all.

Yes -- you would be perfectly right if it weren't for the substituted-pipe trick that is done later. You see, for the pipe trick to work, Mario has to get ahead the screen. This is accomplished by forwarding scrolling momentarily stopping while Mario still moves forward.

21-frame rule liberties, I guess.

Wow... It's a little like my run-in-progress for pokemon red that wastes about 1 minute to glitch a pokemon at level 100 and blaze through the game! Or, at another point, it takes 95 frames to name the rival a name that saves 154 frames overall. Heehee, just a little advertising. But seriously, I was really curious about how the trick worked when I remembered that pipe only leading to a bonus room. Thanks for the explanation. I love old, glitchy games.

I encoded this Pom's run in HD in 720p to Youtube. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdhYLVvH9m8&feature=channel_video_title UPDATE: I deleted the video.

There are number of things wrong with this encode: * No encoder logo * No subtitles (that I could find) * Wacky aspect ratio * Scaling algorithm makes picture look soft. * Too low resolution for HD encode (NTSC NES should be 1792x1344) (Well, that's at least what I could find based on quick look).

Yeah, I did forgot, that was just a test, I'm a beginner of encoding.
