I noticed that when the constantly shrinking square is near it's smallest size the hand will grab you. Wait until the square disappears completely before you try to pass them. Does it really work?

I've tried that trick before and I could never get it to work consistently, even while playing in slow motion.

Wow. That is very good time since the best time with emulator+slowmo+rerecords is 10:54 (The Japanese version is a little bit slower of course) Good Job.

Are you going to submit it to SDA so everyone can see it? Edit: Btw, what were all your level completion times? Also, now that you're done with the speed run, you should try doing some individual level speed runs and try to beat some of my times. You should also try doing a warpless speed run to submit to TG. They have the rules for warpless runs in one of the topics in their forums.

I guess I could do the warpless run, but I don't really want to spend a lot of time practicing all the levels. I want to do other runs too. I'm gonna have the 11:15 run verified by TG first before I send it to SDA. Do you know if SDA will encode the video for me, or will I have to do it myself and send it to them? I also saw the new settings at the TG forums for Punch Out. Deviance should give that a go after he's done with DKC.

I believe TSA sent his LoZ VHS to SDA and Radix encoded it for him. Have you emailed Radix about your run yet?

the best feeling is when you finally finish your legit speedrun. Nothing compares to it. How many tries did it take and how long have you practised for it?

hmm, Punch-Out...I expect to see people like RedTom and Matt Turk participating in that. I came very close finishing my DKC run last night, only to get hit in Ice Age Alley. I really didn't know what I was getting myself into when I took on this game. You gotta be crazy to try to beat DKC in under 50:00 without saving! But, here I am, pushing for the record every night.

Not long. Most of the time spent practicing was so I can maintain the "P", which is needed to pull off a lot of the stunts from the emulator movies. Getting past the hands took countless tries due to randomness. Times: 1-1: 294 1-2: 291 1-3: 285 1-f: 288 t1: 165 b: 199 a: 238 8-1: 286 8-2: 290 (lose fire power) 8-f: 370 (regain fire power) t2: 210 End: 350

excellent time, any comments you would like to share e.g. things you liked and things you didn't like about the run?

Sleepz, what happened to your 11:15 run? Did you submit it anywhere yet? It's been awhile and I haven't seen any anouncements about it at the TG forums and I haven't seen the vid at SDA yet.

The tape is on its way to Mr.Kelly at TG. I also talked to Radix, and he says he can make the videos for me if I send the tape to him, which Ill probably do today. I was trying a little longer to do a perfect run, but no luck. It takes hours of trying just to get past all the hands, and then every level after that must be done at least semi-perfectly. The 11:15 run has a mess up on 8-2 and a sloppy Bowser's castle cause I was getting nervous, but Radix says the next fastest time is around 12 min, so I think the 11:15 is good. Also on the tape is mm2 in 30:40. I'm guessing its almost humanly impossible for a sub-30 without using glitches. Even though its nowhere near as fast as the emu vid, it's probably much faster than what anyone else can pull off, and its full of high risk maneuvers from start to finish. You should definitely check it out too. Smb was also supposed to be on the tape, but I couldn't get even 5:13. I also read on the TG forum that the WR is now down to 5:12, so I don't think I'll be taking this one any time soon. Right now I'm trying for Zelda 2 since its a side-scroller, and its one of the only nes games I still have, and Ill probably work on Sonic 2 time attack the next free weekend I have. edit: Weren't you and Deviance practicing for LoZ or LttP? It would be cool if you guys submitted some times too.

I think Deviance is still planning on doing ALttP after he's done with DKC, but he decided that he's not gonna do LoZ. I still haven't decided whether I'm gonna do LoZ. Awhile ago I was thinking of doing SMB3 but now that you got 11:15 I don't think I'll be able to beat that. Another game I might have had a chance of getting a world record in was DKC, but now Deviance took it out of my reach, so now I'll need to find some other game I'm good at.

I think you should go for LoZ, we can start those competitions again to help you train for it. ALttP would be a good candidate for my next run, though I've been thinking of a few games recently I'd like to do.

A friend brought this to my attention. He tells me that he seen posts on Gamefaqs of people claiming and witnessing sub-11 times for this game (I haven't seen any of them, but he tells me there have been a few). Did anyone know about these, and has anyone seen videos or official records? I don't want to jump to any conclusions or anything, but I'm really doubting these claims, since even on the US version which can be finished faster, getting something around Morimoto's time would require a near-flawless performance on every level AND use the Bowser's castle shortcut. Now, I can possibly see someone getting a sub-11 if they pulled this off AS WELL AS avoid all 3 hands, which are completely random (let me know if you can prove otherwise), but it would take at least several attempts. Its not something that you can just do on the spot, whenever you want to show someone. But if these claims are real, and a lot of people really are getting these times, then I'll have to keep trying for a sub-11 too.

I think you should go for LoZ too. You can be the first one to actually use the "Gambling x1" route.

The people who claimed or claimed to have witnessed legit times under 11 minutes are the same people who like to flame the videos, so they can't be trusted. They most likely made it up to help prove their point that we suck at games.

Those topics at gamefaqs are getting annoying. I would stay away from them. They are just flame wars.

yeah sure, they've beaten Genisto's smb3 run without savestates but they're too "Elite" to show anyone. Give me a break.

Radix is finished making the videos, and I already got to see them. The SMB3 run turns out to be 11:11 by SDA timing ^_^ . They should be up on the site for the next update. As for TG, I confirmed with them that they got my tape about a week ago, but I haven't heard any updates since then. It must take a while to have a run verified I guess. edit: nm, both are verified now.

I just watched the SMB3 run. It was a very good run, but I just have one comment. In the room before Bowser, there are some blocks that look like this: OO ..........O .....................---- You went like this: ---- OO.\........./\ ........\___/...\ ...........O.......\ ......................\ ......................---- When I go through that area I just jump from the X to the X (bumping Mario's head on the ceiling during the jump) in the following diagram, which is a little faster, and it's an easy jump so you should be able to get it every time, and the fireball is enough out of the way that there's no danger of hitting it: ..X OO ..........O ......................X ......................----

Thanks for the insight. I've ruined many good runs screwing up on that part, that's why I take my time for the last block. The other way I used to do it is to just walk off the edge twice, but the odd time you will fall in the lava. I'll try it your way next time. In a month or two, I'm gonna try for a sub-11. I changed my routine a little to depend more on luck, and I can also get 290 on 8-1 now. Plus using the castle shortcut, it might be possible.
