I'm curious to know if anyone's actually played through the entire thing. I only tried it for a couple minutes, but it seems to be a crippled version of Earthbound. Earthbound is done already... so is there anything that would make a TAS of Mother more or equally interesting compared to one of EB? Not that I wouldn't watch if someone did do a TAS, but it seems like there are more worthy projects out there. Edit: and that's an honest question, not intended as flame-bait.

I've finished it before and am playing through the GBA version now. The best part about the game is the music which is why the GBA port is so sad to me. Mother 2 (and Mother 3) is a much better game but this one isn't a bad one,,, I don't think a TAS would be very entertaining though, since most of the fun in playing the game is all the dialogue that would be skipped.

Happy Smile Foxy Face. :3 There is a lot of difference between Mother and EarthBound actually. I have played both, never beat Mother though. I want to some day. It's story line is as compelling as EarthBound's.

The problem with nes earthbound is that it's set to stop at certain point(s), and the only way to get around this is to use a hack. I would go with the gba version; for some reason, i didn't notice that the music was worse.

I thought those were the fault of the NESticle emulator, which was popular at the time. So a more accurate emulator wouldn't set off the "this is a copied cart" portions. But I could be wrong.

Im pretty sure Lost levels wrote something on that matter. http://www.lostlevels.org/200407/200407-earthbound.shtml It only set off the "this a copied cart" message because someone had to change a byte in the code so you could progress in the game. (I think it was a blackout or it would just freeze, changing the byte would allow you to progress through the game until people found out about the copy message"

I really haven't noticed any stops in the game myself. So it must have been the NESticle Emulator or something. I know FCEU doesn't cause any problems.

Okay. I'm not letting this thread drop to the bottom again. I still feel a TAS for this would be a great idea. I just don't understand why people needed an EarthBound TAS first to realize it. >>

Wouldn't be that difficult to run, would it? Assuming it's as simple as it seems....

The game is fairly easy to maneuver in. And it's story line is as good as EarthBound's Story Line. Even get to kill a Starman, hehe. ;3 Maybe the two Story Lines are linked. I dunno.

They are. Remember mother 2 is called "giegu's revenge", or whatever.

Just checking to see if anyone has started a TAS for this. I am eagerly awaiting one for this game, especially since EarthBound was so good. :3

Guess I will take all of the silence as a hint a TAS hasn't yet been started. Oh well. ;3

I always thought :3 was kissy lips. >> This is a pretty cool game, and I'm interested in learning more about how far you can manipulate learning the psychic abilities.
Working on a mod of an old favorite in my spare time. PM for updates!

At the end of every battle (if you win or run away, but not if you lose), you have a 1/4 probability of learning each PSI power you can learn at your current level. Each PSI learned can function as a luck manipulation foothold for learning or skipping any later PSI powers on the list.

I suspected that was the case. Just too bad you can't Manipulate all of the powers at once so you can just blast through. :3 ":3" Is my "Kitty/Kitsune" face, or it could be a cute little Kissy Face, hehe. ;3 But if you can get a lot of PK Powers in one Level Up, then it's equally as good.

I think the only real major problem with a TAS for this game, is there are RANDOM battles, instead of enemies you can see on the screen and avoid. Other than that, all you have to worry about is really manipulating battles so you don't get killed in one hit, like what has happened to me many times going against the Starman in The Zoo, hehe. :3

I don't see how that's a major problem. I'd imagine that you'd just wait a frame or three to bypass them like you do with other RPGs that were published here, unless the mechanics for that somehow work far differently than in other RPGs. I'd say that battles might be more of a problem, if the mechanics for dodging and smashing don't work like in other RPGs (frame timing) or in Mother 2.

Well, I recall the game picks a random number of steps to count down before you get an encounter, and you can make the counter reset to a new number by opening the menu, so the random encounters are actually pretty abusable. I don't remember when it decides the monster you fight, though...

Well, the battles should be easy to avoid then. Only problem then will be a good route, and manipulating battles. ;3 And did someone hack this forum or something? So many problems today.

Technically it's not a counter, but an RNG which is only changed when it is needed, or if you are in a menu, or if some text is waiting for you to press A. The same RNG is used to choose which enemy you fight, what the enemy does, the result of the action, and so forth. The RNG seed is located at 0026 (2 bytes), and each use of the RNG multiplies it by 0x0101 and adds 0x6375.
