Zelda 2 glitched run. Again. The only difference between this run and the one I submitted earlier today is a hexed in overworld.
To get overworld 2 to work I first had 6 shots of rye so I'd forget what I did well enough to try different things. I walked on some swamp at the start to waste some time (so I wouldn't have to walk back and forth or pause 3 times for 10+ frames). This also wound up being a faster strategy so there was less waiting involved. I eventually had to waste some time in the forest and later on in the swamp so it took the same number of frames overall to get through the overworld. But the waiting is spaced out a lot better.
Compared to the submission that I canceled a week ago, I fixed one of the last rooms, and tightened the Dark Link fight. I also hexed in a better looking overworld 1.
I lost 1 frame thanks to the timing of Dark Link between this version and the last. The final hit is still delivered on the same frame, I just had to end the movie a bit later.
If you guys hadn't called me on it, I wouldn't have fixed the overworlds. So thanks.

Old submission text:
Here's an improved version of the Zelda 2 'glitched' run. I would describe the process of making this movie as 'tedious'. I tried pretty much everything I could think of in pretty much every room to get Link's movement just right. Hopefully it's as good as possible.
First off, I started this run because I noticed a few small things in the published movie. I decided to take a closer look, and the small things kept adding up.
I didn't want to make Gigafrost's run plus small improvements, but all of my ideas for route changes didn't work out, so that's kind of how it is.
So yeah, big ups to Gigafrost for all of his work and advice. There is no way on earth I would have figured out how to get through the great palace on my own. By extension, ups to Blitzag & Genisto for their initial work.
I still do not fully understand the healer glitch. As soon as I think I get what it's doing, it does something completely unexpected somewhere else. This is primarily why none of my route ideas worked.
On to the improvements: From the start of the game through the end of the jump cave, 50 frames are saved over the published run. Most of that (I've lost my earliest notes) are from a better overworld getting the trophy, and using jump in the cave. 2 frames are gained from exiting the palace to the left, and one or two frames are gained in a few other places from better movement.
Because of the change in timing of the two runs, the overworld between the jump cave and palace 2 was a nightmare. It seems like I worked on this sequence forever. I wound up losing 13 frames against the published run and I happen to think that's pretty good considering how unfriendly it was.
I gain 30 frames in palace 2. 10 frames are from passing through the first door better. 20 frames are from using a key on the second door. A few frames are lost getting the key and a few frames are gained from better movement.
Nothing much happens until I use jump to get downstab. I get to the door 8 frames faster, make the teacher appear 10 frames faster, and gain a few frames here and there from better movement.
From the start of the hammer run to getting the hammer, 5 frames are saved from small optimizations in various caves. 35 frames are gained by dying faster. It is possible to get the hammer a bit quicker, but the axe isn't as convenient and the 35 frames are lost.
The great palace was a lot more complicated to make than it looked from the start. My notes are literally just a list of room numbers and frame counts for this level (made sense as I was playing, but useless now). 73 frames are saved overall from optimizations throughout the palace and 10 frames are saved on Shadow Link.
copypasta:
  • Uses death as shortcut
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses a game restart sequence
  • Abuses programming errors in the game
  • Manipulates luck
  • Genre: Adventure
I'll be happy to answer any questions the best I can. Enjoy the run.

Truncated: Accepted as an improvement to the current glitch run.
Bisqwit: Taking for processing.

I love how i'm forcibly injecting things by simply saying I didn't like the movie. As for why I download a movie I likely won't watch, the reason is simple: Becuase I very well might enjoy it, as I have enjoyed other glitch runs. If it makes me an "asshole" to say that I didn't like something, then so be it. One interesting point is raised, is that the voting system is undemocratic and therefore voting no is "pointless" However it is no more or less pointless than voting yes. Of course you might argue that "but everyone likes it" but how would you know that if people weren't allowed to vote or put their input in it? Basically what Xebra is saying is "don't be a rabble rouser and cause problems by voting no on a popular submission becuase it won't stop it from being published and will only hurt someone's poor precious feelings." Here's a solution: If my votes are so insignificant and pointless, instead of derailing every single thread I post in for several pages bitching about it, how about you just ignore them? I mean after all, it's quite easy to ignore something that's pointless and insignificant, correct? I certainly won't mind. Oh but there's that "moral fault" there. Kudos to you xebra, moral crusador of the online forums. I hereby present you with this cat.

Well, um, how about YOU ignore our pages and pages of thread derailment, huh? I mean, it's not like anyone's FORCING you to read them and care about what other people think. There, do you see how easy it is to throw the "just ignore it and go away if you don't like it" stuff back at you? lol invincible argument

By my reckoning, it's happened twice just on this page of this thread.

Even if he knows he's going to dislike the movie, why the hell can't he still watch it and vote no? It's his choice and it doesn't make his vote any less valid. In fact I wish more people did this so we could see the how many people really don't enjoy watching an OK run of a crappy unknown game. The point of the voting system is kind of ruined if only people who are especially interested in the movie vote.

It appears to be more limited than your capacity for irrational and inexplicable outbursts of anger. Now to address your main point, I find it necessary to remind you that there are gentle ways of letting people know you disagree with them, or don't like something they have created, etc. NecroVMX is definitely in the wrong because he is unkind in his criticism, and there is never an excuse for that sort of behavior. Moreover, NecroVMX's opinion doesn't actually matter on this forum. The results of his or anyone else's voting don't actually determine which movies will and will not be published. The judges certainly keep one ear tuned to the preferences of the community, and to a certain extent the voting results show which runs people are most eager to see encoded, but at the end of the day the votes don't even matter. That's not really a bad thing, though. Democracy is an insidious and treacherous mistress. Given the realities of the system, if you concern yourself with the feelings of others, the only real justification for voting no on a movie is if you have found a material improvement, mention it and show proof, and then politely ask the submitter to work it into the run.

Look guys, the real reason the voting system came to be was because the number of submissions grew to the point where it was becoming too much work for the judges. This ran counter to their pension for laziness. :P Don't disappoint them by creating this mess. Well though out arguments against why glitched runs shouldn't be published go further than a plethora of abrasive comments surrounding one user's decision to bluntly say 'no'.

Controversial stuff Xebra, but someone had to say it. Yes, each vote on its own doesn't matter; the system lets the judges know what the masses want, but even then it can sometimes take a while for certain runs to get published despite many positive votes. I recall SSF2 runs as an example. I agree that it isn't truly democratic. It serves to guide the judges in their decision, especially with obscure games where they may have limited knowledge. And also, my point about laziness still pertains. :)

By this point he's also doing it for attention. Others addressing it each time it happens just adds to that attention. It's quite a racket. Anywho, I thought this movie ruled all over the place.

I'm not responding directly to the following quote, but this is exactly the reason why I hate this format when it comes to voting for movies since whoever dares vote no or meh to a popular game or series will be instantly flamed. I will give the benifit of the doubt that his vote fits into Zurreco's third option. Anyway seen the previous published run, didn't like it, would have voted no, so I'll refuse to watch this run and vote since I know I'll vote the exact same anyway.

I don't understand how you came to that conclusion seeing as you are condescending all the time and I almost never lash out. I just couldn't let that one slide. Why does it matter if NecroVMX is unkind in his criticism? It still doesn't make his arguments wrong. He did not like the movie so he voted no. End of story. Even if he knew beforehand that he would probably vote no, it STILL doesn't take away the right to vote no after watching it. And if his vote/opinion doesn't matter, why do you care? In my opinion it is important for everyone to express (and to be able to express) their feelings and tell people what they think about something, even if it's not always positive. If you as a creator of a movie can't handle someone saying that they didn't like the movie, you have some growing to do.

There is one thing i dont get. Why is the cancelled one 06:13.07 and this one is 06:13.08? It's still good though!

Stylistic choices. He redid the overworld to change the few long pauses (very noticable and quite bad looking) into many smaller, unnoticable ones. It makes the run look a lot cleaner, smoother, and refined. It's just a frame.

You = Ellsworth Toohey Me = Howard Roark From this guy's post, you'd think I posted "no! you fucking moron! you suck! this sucks! you're stupid and gay!" to placate xebra, next time I vote no, I will accompany my "no" post with a picture of a rainbow and/or kitten. Won't that be splendid?

Because I hexed in a new overworld, I had to end the movie 1 frame later as a result of of a change in timing of the Dark Link fight. I had to reduce Link's velocity a little bit more for the last hit to avoid getting hit myself, and therefore losing the fight. PS, it doesn't hurt my feelings if someone doesn't like my run and votes 'no'. There's no sense worrying about something I can't change (ie, someone's taste). The bigger an asshole they are about it, the easier it is for me to ignore. I find bickering about the validity of that vote to be pretty annoying, though.

But isnt having the fastest time possible the main goal? I mean who cares how it looks! But for one frame, i guess it was a good idea to make it smoother to watch. Time (1 frame) vs Entertainment (much) Entertainment wins by much i vote yes :)

The last hit is still delivered at the same time. I jut had to be a few pixels farther to the right.

Didn't we do this already? Like 5 times omg? The No option is there for a reason. If we didn't want No votes from people who didn't like the movie, we could have a poll with the only option being Yes. I voted yes and I will accept this movie shortly. (These two facts are unrelated, by the way.)

No, it was more of a reply to the comment that judges don't care about the votes when judging. If we want to debate the judging process further, I suggest we split off into a new topic, because this one is sufficiently derailed already.

Xebra, if being your personal scapegoat for all the ills of the world helps you get through each day without shooting yourself, then I'm happy to accept the position. But of course since you're an expert on my attitude and personal philosophy, you already know I don't really care. EDIT: Apparently someone else voted no, Ask bisqwit who it is so you could tell them how moot their vote is and how they're the cause of AIDS in africa.
