Post subject: How about a TAS demo movie for YouTube?

We all know that just about every TAS that gets posted on YouTube gets swamped with replies claiming the player cheated or hacked the game. Even those who understand the concept of a TAS slam the movie because "they couldn't beat the game without slowmotion" or "it's not impressive because anyone can do it." Here's an idea: How about we make a movie that demonstrates what goes into the making of a TAS? It could be made with some program that captures the display of the screen, like Fraps. It could show off the use of states and slowmotion and how tedius and difficult TASing is, demonstrating how they work to create the complete videos. Of course, we couldn't make it completely boring, so it should have a wide variety of games, good music, and good editing. Maybe we could even throw in an audio commentary to include stuff like the player cussing out the game for not cooperating after hours of trying the same jump. Just an idea. I'm certainly not planning to make it, I don't know a thing about video editing.

Its too much based round when slow down existed and not on more modern frame advance videos.

That video is extremely dated. Most of those movies are long obsoleted. Also, the phrase 'the fastest way is the only way' is somewhat outdated too as sacrificing speed for entertainment is reasonably common. I think there was some discussion into making a new one a few months ago, however, I think CAD is thinking of a different type of demo. One that demonstrates the TASing process rather than the movies themselves. It could be perhaps be interesting, but I'd personally rather see this movie replaced with something better.

That actually was the main inspiration for the idea. That's one of my favorite movies on YouTube. But yeah, my idea was to show the TASing process, not the movies themselves. There are plenty of those, and too many people mindlessly bash them because they don't understand what kind of work went into them and what they stand for.

The thing is looking at the older submissions, they often state in the movie description "watch impressively how... blah blah blah", this is deeply misleading as TASes are supposvley meant to be entertaining and not to boast about the achivements of the author.

Hi, thinking of this, I'd say that making a kind of a documentary video would make a lot of sense. I don't think it will be as popular as all the end results, but if someone bitches about cheating or just doesn't get the concept, you could refer them to the video. And even for us people that see the art behind the clips - and the incredible amount of work, patience and dedication put behind them, it would be interesting to see the story behind the clips. Making a TAS is interesting on so many levels that I still get excited when I'm telling people about this new kind of art. Even my dad who has never played video games for longer than about 10 minutes when I was little understood the concept that TAS videos are a piece of art. Of course he didn't understand the art at first, but after I've shown him a movie or two and explained him how much work had to be put into creating this, he began to understand (this was during a lunch break when he asked me what I was doing in my spare time) We really should educate people on this. I'm doing my part in the real world, now please, somebody with more sense of creativity than what I have, go ahead and produce that clip! Philip

Hey, maybe I'll use my dvcam to doccument the next tas I work on, since I like this idea. Not that I think the average person would find it particularly interesting, but someone somewhere might find it useful/informative.

A lot of TAS work goes into luck manipulation, but I don't think it would be very easy to explain all that in the constrained time of a video. It's hard enough to explain how these old games use the controller to decide random things. Melissa
