Me and my room-mate are looking for a good 2-player game to play, and I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions. We recently played (and beat) Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3, and we're mainly looking for similiar RPG's/Adventure games. We're also open for other type of games, but no fighting games like Street Fighter. We also want to be able to play the game at the same time, so games like Donkey Kong Country where one player is playing and the other one is waiting is not really in our interest either. Besides that, feel free to throw out your suggestions here. The game can be for any console with a good and stable emulator (ex. NES, SNES, GB, Genesis, N64). It's also a big plus if the game is long too, so we won't beat it in an hour or so. ;)

TMNT2 and TMNT3, Contra and Super C, Double Dragon 1, 2 and 3, and Arkanoid Doh it again (SNES). Quarth also, but that one is already mentioned. Edit: and clu clu land.

Sho(u)dai Nekketsu Kunio Kun for SNES. It's a mix between TMNT style arcade beat-em-up and RPG, kinda like SoM. It's only partially translated, but the Engrish is funny. It's quite long, and pretty laggy like it's precursor River City Ransom (which you should also try.) I suggest getting a walkthrough unless one of you can read Japanese. Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu (NES) is sort of like 2 on 2 Street Fighter (cooperative) that feels more like a side-scroller. Great fun. NARC for NES and MAME is also good. (Especially the MAME version. Prostitutes being stolen by clowns!) :D NES, MAME and SNES each have a version of Smash TV, which will take awhile to beat, just because it's so damn hard. NES, N64 and MAME have Rampage, which is good, stupid fun (or just plain stupid, if you play by yourself.)

Strike Gunner S.T.G. (SNES): A shooter, but tons of weapons and your ships can combine into a super ship. River City Ranson (NES): One of the funnest RPG/Adventure games I ever played! Turtles in Time (SNES): Bomb. Battle Toads/Super Battle Toads (NES/SNES): It's hard to call these "fun" though considering how frustratingly hard they are. Can someone talk a little more about Quarth? Like what system it's for would be nice. It's genre and style would be good to know also.

As the others said, River City Ransom is a must. Since you liked SoM, you also have to try Secret of Evermore. There is a 2-player patch around, made by FuSoYa I believe.

Do you not want anything competitive? Most of the good beat-em-ups are on MAME - Dungeons & Dragons, Alien vs. Predator, Sengoku 3 (SO underrated). The main exception is the Streets of Rage series. The Peace Keepers is also kinda interesting due to the character variety and huge number of different routes. Also on MAME, you have the Metal Slug series, a worthy successor to Contra. I can list more if you'd like! =)
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

Soldiers of Fortune- plays like True Lies, or the overhead levels in Contra III.

Ooh. I forgot about that one. It's pretty easy (especially the Japanese version, Rushing Beat Shura, where you get 30 continues for some reason) but it has multiple endings depending on which path you take... I think that's how it worked, at least. It's fun.

the bomberman series, especially the later SNES versions (super bomberman 5 (jp) anyone ?) are playable 2 versus on the same console/emulator (don't know if the 5 players mode works online though), and are very funny. easy to find and to play, and perfect for either short and long sessions.

I would recommend Final Fight and Warriors of Fate, essentially a bigger version of Final Fight set in China (in the past). The old SEGA Spiderman 2D is fun too, but I think that might be on a specific SEGA emulator (not MAME if I recall).

Gunstar Heroes (Genesis). Streets of Rage 1/2/3 (Genesis). I find these alot of fun with 2 players.
<adelikat> I am annoyed at my irc statements ending up in forums & sigs

A lot of good 2P games have already been suggested, so I'll continue the Genesis trend (I have recommended these games before): * Crying (J) / Biohazard (U) - Flying shoot em up, interesting shield swinging * Contra: Hard Corps - well, you know Contra. They went a bit over the top with bosses in this one. Four different endings to see!

Wow, thanks a lot for all your tips! :) I haven't had time to test them all, but I'll get back to you when I have. My room-mate got very excited about Secret of Evermore, so I think We'll try that out first - once he gets his gamepad back... But don't let this post stop you from suggesting more games, it's always fun to know more good 2-player games, and I believe that more people than me are interested in this too! :)

Six actually (although one of them leads to the Game Over screen).

Pocky and Rocky. Both the original and its sequel.
