I've looked for a topic concerning youtube and related sites but all I could find was the topic about the stolen smb vid, and the warning on top of each page about not posting it (although that seemed to be aimed at viewers, not the creators of..). If I missed the topic I'm sorry. It's not in the faq either. I was wondering what the rules or restrictions are to posting vids on youtube sites. Obviously next to "they need to be your own". Is there a problem from those sites? Did they request not to do this? Might it be an idea to let Bisqwit create an account there and be the only one allowed to post speedruns there. It seems to me that such sites lower the treshhold for downloading/viewing the vids a great deal. Although the mirror on archive.org is great! It just seems that youtube sites allow for easier access to the vids, and when posted under a general TASvids account, there would be no copyright issues (no more then posting them here). Unless of course those sites requested not to do this (why are those two sites listed specifically?). But is there a problem with creators of runs posting their vids on such sites? PS. We can help with uploading those vids. I'm on a university network, I'm sure there are others with high speed connections that would like to help... It's not like I'm asking you to upload it all by yourself Bisqwit :)

I don't speak for anyone, of course, but I think the rules of thumb are as follows: don't claim you did the video yourself (unless you actually did), and don't claim it's a regular speedrun instead of a TAS run. If you do neither, and if you mention where the video came from, you should probably be fine - but to be sure, better wait for a definite answer from Bisqwit. :)

Taipion has a director's account on youtube, and actually already has a few hundred runs posted. All with proper description and credits, of course.

Ok, not that familiar with youtube terms, is a "directors" account special? But if he's got the vids online then safely nevermind :) (Although something could be said for an account for TASvideos.org, rather then a real person, for the collection of vids from this site)

Directors just use a special sign up page to be a director. Nothing special from what I see. The directors are retarded though (like brookers, etc)

Do they pay extra for it? Is that why some people can upload videos longer than 10 minutes even though that's supposed to be the limit now?

IMO there are pros and cons in posting these videos to youtube: Pros: - Easier access. People don't need to download and install obscure codecs and players to see the videos, a web browser (with flash plugin) will do. - Larger potential audience. More people may get interested in the TAS world. Cons: - Since the videos are out of context, many people will get confused (believing they are unassisted runs) and then outraged when they find out they have been "cheated". People don't read explanations nor warnings (this is a very well known fact). Since this is something we have been trying to eradicate for years, this will partially undermine the efforts. - Crappy video quality. Lots of time and effort and computing power is sacrificed in order to get the maximum quality/filesize ratio when videos are published here at tasvideos. When people publish videos at youtube, they will just convert them to wmv with automatic compression settings, with no fine-tuning nor experience&knowledge on how to get a good quality/size ratio, and thus the videos will look like crap. - Potential copyright issues. Let's admit it: These videos infringe copyright (the soundtrack surely does, maybe the graphics too). Publishing copyrighted material at youtube is against their usage policy (even though for some odd reason they don't seem to enforce this, given the high amount of copyrighted material you can find at youtube if you just search).

semi on topic: I'm uploading the Warioland 4 run to Google Video, with the tag and everything still on, because nobody else has uploaded it yet and I'd rather not waste 200 MB of space on my comp. Do I need to do anything special once it's uploaded?

*thread necromancer* I just ran into this youtube user, he uploaded all kind of videos from here. I think few of you knew about it. It seem that he only credit to player, but not ever mention about TASVideos - even his own website. It just that I'm left unexplained why this user come here and 'take' movie file, then encode .avi - crediting player, but claim as their own "present by speedruns.net"

yes, it allows user to upload video longer than 10 minutes but it still capped at 100MB size, free to sign up for.

I don't think that he has just taken the movie files from here, some people also submit their movie files to his site as well as TASVideos.

Or usually, they just answer "yes" when WebNations asks if he can publish their runs on his site.

Right, these are another way to publish TAS movies. However these progress are VERY invisible on my side - I mean did he really ask for permission? Did xipo (or any other players) go to speedruns.net and submit the movie file? Their forum almost blank (I can see Dark Fulgore and MattyXB posting there tho). If he did really asked for permission, they left out "with permission from {playername}...", if they didn't - it would be (in my term) 'stealing' then.

yep. and i see no disadvantage for any player. i give credit as much as possible. i do not steal anything because we encode those movies on ourselves so we do not cut the movies from here or similar. i just try to give something back to my biggest hobby ever. so i got the space i got the time and you get direct downloads and fame. many players even pushed me to publish it on youtube. i just fill the hole for people who can not encode their movies to missing time or knowledge by themselves or who are not capable of downloading with bittorrent. further it is not my intention to compete with this site here. i am a lurker of the first hour of this site. the players are our heroes and these heroes i want to encourage. as a player you can only profit by having multiple sites.

some people submit, some send their runs with email and some just give me the link from here. you all should not be that harsh about another site. some people will not like me for doing what i do and some other people do not like bisqwit and so on. on this way we are one big family where everyone can do as he likes to.

He did ask me about publishing my Silent Scope movie about a month ago, and I gave him permission because I figured there wasn't any harm in it. Seeing those movies on youtube annoyed me a little bit, mainly because he doesn't post the author information in the title line (however he does post it in the author comments and has a watermark on the actual movie). In any case I think this site produces a better quality AVI at the expense of taking a while longer, so I don't think I'll be giving him permission to use any more of my future submissions. When I watch the movies I like the to look nicer than usual crap online (I'm not implying that the encodes WebNations does are crap, they're just slightly lesser quality). But I do agree with the idea that a movie is the authors intellectual property/work, so they should be allowed to do what they will with it.

It looks like Taipon's account has been suspended and all his videos removed.

WebNations: Is there any way to download the emulator movie file? I can only find the encoded movie. There was a movie I wanted to download, but after seeing the first part online i quickly changed my mind. I thought I'd ask anyway.

I found most of my movies on YouTube some time ago, and it was Taipon who had uploaded them. I didn't really mind, he did mention all the necessary stuff in the comments, though he didn't ask me about permission before uploading them... The thing with sites like Youtube and Googlevideos is that if it doesn't say in the title who made the movie, people will usually think it's the one who uploaded it who made it, without even looking at the comments. Someone made a comment like "wow, nice movie you've made taipon!", which made me a little angry. So I think that mentioning who made the movie in the title is a good idea.

WebNations wrote me a PM yesterday saying that he agreed about crediting the author in the title line, so hopefully that will be changed in the next couple days.

there is no way to download the emulator files. this makes sense because of the following reasons. we have contests where the winner will get a prize for submitting the fastest run. i.e. dark fulgore got a zelda twilight princess for nintendo wii for his mk mythologies run. due to this we are not linking to the emulator files because these would be re-produced which would destroy the whole sense of these contests. for all other movies this could be added but due to being alone at work at the site i still got a HUGE to-do list. so this will be added for sure.

Really, this "permission to publish" thing is quite ridiculous, imo. You made it public. That's the point where you lose some amount of control. And I can't see what's wrong with that. Properly credited material sends the audience back to the creator, so that they can check if newer material is available. Of course labelling stuff as your own when you didn't create it is wrong, or not provinding the necessary info.

People make that all the time. :/ Well, the idiots are everywhere.
