I love reading about (and trying to play) various challenges of old games (particularly NES). Things like "FF1 solo character", "Zelda 1 without the Sword", etc. Is there a compiled list of common challenges for retro games? The only way I find them now is by searching for a particular game on gamefaqs and google. I want to find a list which includes (or links to) challenges for many games.

I don't know of a compiled list of challenges of this type, but it's something I've been planning to make myself for a long time...

Oh yeah, I remember this old site http://www.world-of-nintendo.com/Content/Game_Challenges_-_NES But like most stuff on that site, it's just junk that random people came up with off the top of their heads. Also, they changed it to some weird format where all games are linked, but you don't know if a game has any entries until you click on it and find yourself on the edit page.

It isn't classic, but I dare you beat double dragon 2 controlling both characters. (It's possible, I did it). Or Super Mario Bros 1 using just your feet. (it's possible, there's a video somewhere on the internet. I haven't tried it yet, but I don't think I'd have much trouble getting it done, maybe the hammer brothers would be the worst part). About a list, since there's none, you should start making one, and include emulator videos of them (showing that it's possible, and who did it first or better).

I tried that once, and quickly realized that I can't even get the flying-knee timing right with one player. It's fun, though.

Thanks for the link - and yeah, I agree. That list is the general idea of what I'm looking for, except much more complete, with more well-thought-out challenges, and better organized.

Ha, maybe sometime I'll try that.

Maybe I will sometime. Not sure I have the time to include emulator videos of them, but I might start compiling a list / website of video game challenges at some point, with a certain minimum "quality" bar.

Or play a game in the blind mode. ;-) I used to play Super Street Fighter 2 blind (but with sound) against weaker human opponents. It's extremely funny, mostly because you can anticipate their actions even then (typical human psyche), after doing a set of your own moves. The hardest part there is to guess on which side your fighter is faced, but if you have a fighter that can shot with a quarter turn on the D-pad it's pretty easy to find out as well.

disable player models in half life multiplayer, playing against opponents using sound only.

I used to do that (controlling the second character with my feet) with Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Golden Axe 3 when I had to get to a certain point (such as the end of second level in GA3 to test the double magic thingie). Playing Battlemaniacs through entirely like that is impossible, though — the end of the hoverbike level is damn hard even when using hands.

I skimmed through it, and I don't think there's a single NES game there that HAS any content.
Taking over the world, one game at a time. Currently TASing: Nothing

Would a "Challenges" section on TASVideos be acceptable? I like the idea of limiting yourself, like a Swordless Zelda run, and seeing how fast people can get through the game like this. Maybe you could merge it with the Hacks/Concept Demos section.

Well, there's already a board on these forums dedicated to it...
