Alter`s Metroid II 100% in 1:06 (ingame timer) / 251740 frames

There is no previous run of Metroid II published.
This run aims for the fastest time with 100% item completion, including optional and unneccesary items (such as the springball, all beams and energy tanks.).
The emulator used is VisualBoyAdvance 1.7.2 rerecording v19.3. The run starts from power up.

The game

Not as popular as Super Metroid or the GBA games, Metroid II is still a game liked by many for it`s unique atmosphere and the famous Metroid game play. Many things are similar to other Metroid incarnations, while others differ (weapon acquisition, physics...). I loved the game as a kid, so I decided to try my first TAS with this.

Techniques used

First of all, the "Select-glitch" (A glitch that allows the player to open unintended paths by pressing start & select in rapid succession) has not been used. No programming errors are abused, however I am not sure if some of the techniques are actually intended by the programmers, or are glitches (see below).

The Morphball

By far the most important item for speeding the game`s completion up in Metroid II is the morphball. It is the fastest way of horizontal movement (walking, jumping and the spiderball all being slower, in that order), so whenever possible (or feasible) horizontal movement is done with the morphball.
The morphball has several drawbacks:
  • The main weapon cannot be used
  • Morphing into a ball takes one to two frames
  • Falling more than 1 block causes the ball to bounce, resulting in slower movement (which can be cicumventet by unmorphing for one frame)
Another property of the morphball unique to Metroid II (compared to other Mertrooid games of course) is mid-air-unmorph-jumping(tm). When leaving the ball form while jumping or falling, Samus can start a jump for a few frames, just as if she was standing on solid ground (spinning is not possible however). This allows for some interesting movement. This might be a glitch rather than an intended feature.

Jumping

As jumping is a rather slow type of horizontal movement (but the fastest vertical) it is avoided as much as possible. That means, all jumps take place in an as short time as possible, which is not easy in this game. Before Samus passes half her maximum jump height, the jumping movement can be canceled by releasing the jump button. But if she passed half maximum height, she will execute a jump at maximum height, which takes time if in horizontal movement.
Several techniques are used to avoid that:
  • Kneeling before a jump reduces maximum height
  • Using the morphball in various ways (jumping, falling, spiderball) before a jump
  • Taking damage to gain height before the actual jump

Taking damage

Just like the mid-air-unmorph-jump when Samus takes damage from any souce but acid, she will be able to jump without being on the ground (and be repelled away from the source of damage before that, pushed upwards). This is used whenever possible and feasible while moving upwards. This might also be a glitch.
Every time an energy tank is collected Samus`s health is fully replenished, which makes collecting health from enemies unnecessary (still happens sometimes, but at random).

Weapons

Hardly any enemies except the obligatory Metroids are killed in this run, so weapons aren`t used much. I still collected all beams in their original locations because of the 100% goal. Only the icebeam is required to beat the game, and I change back to the ice beam as soon as possible after collecting all beams. By far the most used weapon is the missile, necessary for killing Metroids. I use missile refill stations sometimes instead of getting missiles from enemies, which doesn`t cost me much (if any) time overall.

Tools

Apart from the rerecord VBA version I used Maximus`s TAS Movie Editor to splice together the final movie.

Notes and thanks

This is my first "serious" TAS, so I`m sure there`s room for much improvement. Please criticize away.
Making the movie was fun & tiring, I understand the effort behind it much better now ^^
I think it became a fine run, I hope Metroid fans will enjoy it as I enjoyed the other Metroid TAS.

Sorry, voting no :/ I tried the first room, and played it a little sloppy, and left the room 22 frames ahead. I'm a little concerned when it comes to taking damage. Wouldn't it be faster to take some damage in the beginning of the run, instead of trying to kill/avoid enemies (Refering to the... thing that jumps around before the first Metroid-fight, among other)? Lots of jumps seemed to be too high and/or too long. The Metroid-battles themself seem a little... well... bad, I mean, couldn't you do the machine-gun-style used against that big mofo in the end against all Metroids up until that point? Too make matters worse, I'm afraid this run is actually slower than the SDA-run (It lands on 1:09:23, not sure about the timing in that run though, but still, the runner claims that 1:07:xx is possible). Finally, I think that an any% would be a better idea.

If you take damage from them you are repelled into the wrong direction, at least I got.

Some aren`t perfect I guess, yeah.

Most Metroids I try to lure towards the exit I will go during the fight. Also, most of them cannot be hit that quick, they don`t actually take damage.

Now that would make my run really bad :(

Maybe, I just liked the idea of 100% better somehow. Anyways, as I said, this is my first submissions, still got a lot to learn, so thanks for the input.

I'm not voting in the poll, since I can't sit through this, but my vote is no. The run is of extremely low quality. When I saw this thread, I was like "Well, it's about time!" I have been waiting a long time for someone to put time and effort into this game. Unfortunately it looked there wasn't any put into this movie. 258 rerecords for over an hour of gameplay?

The battle with the metroid in the water area was pretty good, you killed it much faster than the first metroids. Taking damage seem to give you a good boost and I think you could have taken a lot more damage in certain places to move faster forward like the time when you obtained the Wave Beam, it should have been faster to take damage from that enemy. But I liked how you tried to roll as often it was possible. Hope you are encouraged to improve your run. Sorry, but I have to vote no.

I agree with that. While I don't really like 100% runs, this game isn't that long, and quite charming. If you decide to improve this, and want help, feedback, or whatever, I'm willing to help, this might result in a "quick" , glitch free 100%-run.

The rerecord count is wrong of course, it seems Maximus` splicer does not do that correctly. Everybody else, thanks for the input. I`m not discouraged or something at all if this get`s rejected. I will do it again, and better. Of course, I also learned a lot during the actual run, all of which will go into the next version. I`ll post WIPs in the Metroid II thread over in the GB forums I guess ^^

I think you should cancel this to save judges spending time looking at something which such an obvious outcome. I tried to watch it but it was clearly unoptimised so I didn't last out which is why I won't vote. Also, if you ended input on the earliest possible frame then this is slower than the SDA run. Don't get discouraged. Give this another bash and post up WIPs in the forums for review and you'll get there ;)

I'd like to see Metroid 2 tas, but I would have to agree with everyone that it's a poor quality, and seem like you wasn't aware of www.metroid2002.com website (such as corner fall fast trick)

Alter, go to your submission, click on edit submission and change the status into cancelled. Your run is slower than the Speed Demos Archive. Your in-game clear time is 1:06, Speed Demos Archive in-game clear time is 1:06. Your time for 100% run is 1:09:55, the speed demos archive the is 1:09:23, your's is slower by 32 seconds. Your rerecord number is low. Voting No.

I haven't watched the movie so i can't vote, but 258 rerecords is awfully low for such a long run, and if you decide to redo you should use frame advance and many more tas tools that are available.

Cancelled, redoing. Thanks for the tips everybody. And, as I said above, the rerecord count shown in the file is of course not correct, that`s only the count of the first file I used, before splicing. Anyways, you`ll hear from me again ^^

So, your submission is cancelled, you can do better next time to aim for fastest time. So get more rerecording and use some tas tool so you can help out trying to be accurate and not to miss the shots. That you can know the enemy's HP. So you can try to sumbit the better movie's.

Haven't played the game, but this was real fun to watch. The only parts that looked inoptimal enough to bother me were the metroid fights. I'm voting yes on this canceled run :)

Thanks ^^ I`m redoing it right now, you can check progress in the Gameboy forum. Unfortunately the Metroid fights are are hardly optimizable because they dodge away from you all the time. Still the new run has better fights imo.
