A month after last April Fool's day, it's still confused as to what the rules are as to what makes a publishable April Fool's day run. What are the formal rules for these joke submissions?

Ha ha ha ha formal rules for April fools submissions? I think the current system works just fine: if it's novel, interesting, and people like it, it's good to go.

But I agree with the idea that if it's entertaining and interesting, it should be published. Losing in Tetris as fast as possible is boring. Playing songs with an input test is interesting and entertaining. :) (Super Mario World "walkathon" was interesting, but annoying and boring in the sense that it was more jumping than walking.)

I would think that creating the submission according to a codified set of rules would defeat the purpose of it being a "joke".

From site maintenance perspective, I wish to follow these guidelines at April Fools pranks: ― Once you realize that it is an April Fools joke, it has to be funny. ― It must not cause feelings of desperation or insult. For example, joking that the site is shut down permanently, is something I would never do. ― It has to tempt believing that it is true, however minorly. ― It has to contain a seedling for future. Something that makes it worth reviewing in future. Something that may be later utilized in non-April Fools productions. ― If you want to try something radically different and novel, April Fools day is the day. These guidelines are mainly inspired by my observations of Google's April Fools pranks.

I think those are good guidelines apart from number 4... I don't know what you mean about "Something that may be later utilized in non-April Fools productions.".

I think the point of April Fool submissions are somewhat lost when they are published a month later at the earliest. But fixing that would restrict them to publishers, or require that people send them in advance.

But I meant something like this: Suppose you have a movie that beats all the bosses in a game, but in a really dumb way (Lamest item, roundabout way, etc.) Obviously, the impact is lost if you have to go through everything to get to the bosses. So should you use GameShark codes, or use several savestates and input files, or what?

As long as we are wallowing in menutia, do we need to define joke? Or can we accept that everyone here knows what a joke is, and apply this wonderful principal to april fools' jokes in general?

It still hasn't answered this: If an April Fool's day joke involves doing various things in a game, which are not close together, should you start from multiple savestates and have multiple input files or what?
