By sharper angle I mean something like the green path, the red path is more like what you did. Basically you'd have to take full advantage of the block wall, it'd be easier if it was a thicker wall. I assume the finish line ends some where in the wall so you don't actually have to go around the wall completely.

I was looking at the RR lap times and it looks like when you fall off it makes the next lap about 3 seconds slower. The fall off laps on GV3 take about 2.5 seconds and the other laps about 6.5 seconds. So I think if you fell off twice on GV3 you could save a second. Same for GV1 but 2 seconds could be saved because the lap times are about 8.5 normal and 3.5 for the one you fell.
Might want to use koopa on mushroom cup. I think he would be faster for GV because you'll have to accelerate from falling off and the two fall off laps could go faster with the tigher turns. Also MC2 I think would be faster since your in a long boost most the time and you have to accelerate from stop once. Koopa should be best for DP1 too. Mario would diffenitely be faster for MC1 and BC1 though. Bowser even better for BC1, maybe even MC1 too but a lot worse for the other three tracks. So it's a close call between these three, You'd have to test to be sure, but I doubt it's bowser.

it's actually quite a bit longer than that. you can look at bc2 for the relevant times. it takes about 4 seconds for lakitu to drop you down and let you accelerate again so that would be roughly 10 seconds per lap on gv3 times 3 totaling 35 seconds.
Why is BC2 relevant? What's relevant is a lap done without falling off and a lap done with falling off before it; RR fits that bill, BC2 does not. It made the next lap take about 3 seconds longer and the fall off lap takes about 2.5 seconds.

my apologies. i didn't consider that the first lap wouldn't have to be driven at 0 acceleration. so if you have a 7.3 second lap, a 6.8 second lap, 2 2.8 second laps, and a 10 second lap, that makes the total 29.5, 1.5 seconds faster than the record. and if you manage to pull it off on the first lap, you can have 2 10.5 second laps, and 3 2.8 second laps which would make the total 29.5 roughly as well. of course, the small amount of distance more that lakitu puts you down on the track compared to RR could add half a second. worth a look here and on GV1 and GV2, definitely.
I did some testing before and I think GV1 is the only track you could pull it off on the first lap. It wouldn't be as good as doing it after a normal lap but since normal laps on GV1 take so long it might be able to save a little bit.

I was trying to use the zipper long boost seen in that GV3 150cc 2p race on youtube. Here's what I've done on BC1. The second U-turn is hard I think I need to double bounce off the right wall.

GO SATURN!

I remember seeing this Game in Cartridge Format. I don't remember whether I played it or not. I think I played as Peach, like I used to in Mario Kart 64, the first Mario Kart Game I've ever played. Personally, I love to race against Koopa Troopa, and I did a Rainbow Road run with him in Time Attack, in about 1:47.57. I don't have a Movie file, so I can't prove that.
You cannot obtain a lightning bolt or a star when in first place.
The item probability for them is set to 0 under those conditions.
Note also that the feather is disabled on Mario Circuit and Donut Plains courses.

I couldn't get the second turn to work even with a double bounce off that wall, I hit the next wall 3 times.

I got a 3.73 for the first lap of GV1, doing it this way should save nearly 2 extra seconds. This also makes a strong case for using koopa as doing this with mario or bowser would be harder since you need to turn sharply and likely take longer, also you'll be accelerating from the start line and from the fall off, twice, on GV1 alone.

Ya yoshi would be better for the accelerating parts, but he doesn't have good long boosts or tight turning like koopa does.
Well to start the zipper long boost you need to power slide into a wall. The only wall you can really do that into is the right wall. You can bounce off the right wall and go to the left side, might be a little faster. But I don't think it'll be faster than just doing it normally if you can't make it down the second set of lava jumps.

yea, you might lose half a second generating the longboost. if you can longboost normally off that last left arrow and manage to get around the wall and first set of bumps, it might be useful. if not, you should longboost off the wall after the right arrow.

I won't start a second run for quite a while - I need a break, and to play Planescape Torment :)
If anyone else wants to start on a second run, or team up with me that'd be cool.
I doubt anyone's interested, but I've written 231 lines of Python that can play the "little circles" tracks.
I tried it on Donut Plains 1, with Mario, 150cc and it got a time of 17.18 (just fast forward past my crappy playing of Mario Circuit 1)
(I got 18.80 seconds with Bowser when I did this track in my tas)
Note: this smv only plays back with snes9x 1.51
EDIT: and on it's first try with Bowser it got 18.59
Well, Fabianx showed me how to wrap snes9x to allow it to be called from Python...
and then I wrote a script that tries going round in small circles, in various ways, while it watches positions in memory to monitor how fast it's going or if it's successfully skipped a lap or not.
If you're interested here is the python script.
yeah... even if you can code, that python script isn't the most comprehensible bit of code I've written; it's actually quite simple, but I was coding quickly rather than thinking about clarity.
Anyway, next weekend I might have a go at doing one for Mario Circuit 1.

If I write a bot to optimise the run for me, it doesn't matter who I pick; as I can just run the bot again with another character to see if they're faster.
I can already do this for the "small circles" tracks now.
