The famous dokokashira run glitch is here. I'm no pokemon expert, but thanks to the game resources in the FAQ section. I was quickly able to establish how luck manipulation works and therefore obtain critical hit+oponent/enemy miss. I'd like to thank FractualFusion for showing the best route through the game, His demonstration run was a near perfect run, but I was able to obtain a better wild pokemon encounter battle and therefore get a time below 5 mins which I initally thought as being impossible. The run isn't particarly interesting in my eyes but its worth publishing as it comparable to the no exporation glitch in ALttP and much like it very well known and popular.
Note: In order for this run to work you'll need the latest rerecording-20 version of VBA

Mitjitsu: Cancelling this because they are faster runs and a better route available

AKA, thanks for giving this a shot. Unfortunately, your run is at least one second slower than cstrakm's movie. Reasons include: - getting the potion from the boy instead of the PC - encountering the random battle late Please watch cstrakm's movie and read the most recent posts in the dokokashira thread. Voting no here, but I am confident someone will produce an acceptable movie within a couple days. Maybe you could team up with LagDotCom on this. Last I heard he was stuck on luck manipulation, but it sounds like you've gotten the hang of it.

Voting No. It could be faster, as hanzou mentioned, and I generally wasn't impressed with the movie at all. However, I accept that this will be a shoe-in for publication once it is optimized. e: Can the two Yes votes please explain the reason for their votes? I know you don't have to, but it defeats the purpose of voting if you're not going to explain it.

Haven't watched it yet, but I would like to mention that there is an alternate warp to Celadon. Instead of walking 80 or so steps and warp to the route right of Celadon, do this: - Walk 50 or so steps before entering Rival's house. You should be warped to what appears to be the silence bridge section (whatever it's called to the right of Fuschia) and your character is inside a thin wall but can move up or down to escape, and there is a trainer nearby down and to the right. - Walk up one, then left until you hit a trainer, then right until the trainer mentioned in the above paragraph disappears off the left side of the screen. - Then walk left and up and you're in Celadon. The rest of the run follows accordingly. It's shorter by a number of steps. By the way, this run should be done in SGB mode.

Hmm, I don't know what's up with nicopon.jp, but I've gone ahead and mirrored the file elsewhere: cstrakm-pocketmonstersred.flv (requires Wimpy FLV player).

I voted before anyone posted, so I didn't know there was a quicker method. I'd change it if I could.

Just recorded a 4:58 (SGB mode) using known strategies and losing the first battle. It could still be better.

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean correctly, but it makes no difference when you encounter the wild Pokemon, since the steps required to trigger the glitch do not count until you enter Pallet Town. Edit: Now down to 4:45. After switching starter with Oak's Parcel, go back to battle menu, access attack menu, exit menu, and run. It won't fail. I think it could now be faster picking Bulbasaur first to lose the first battle.

Ahh, that explains it. Thanks.
access attack menu, exit menu, and run.
Great discovery!

What's slow about picking Charmander then losing the first battle? Is it just impractical to manipulate Squirtle to do max damage non-critical hits and miss your own attack?

Charmander has a higher attack than Squirtle and Scratch has a higher attack power. However, Squirtle may still be faster if it uses Tail Whip once, eliminating a Critical Hit.

AKA that's a cool glitch.

LagDotCom mentioned that Charmander could theoretically faint after four non-critical hits from Squirtle, so if that's true there's nothing to eliminate. A few days ago I tried out the warp route described by Fractal above. Indeed it's faster, and also glitchier thus more entertaining. Edit: Here is a demo using this route which finishes at 4:43.33 (despite continuing off AKA's run which gets the potion late). I think some people might find a demo helpful, since the trick isn't entirely repeatable using just Fractal's instructions. When walking on the bridge, it seems that step count must be carefully controlled in order to make it to Celadon. In the meantime has anyone found a shorter route or confirmed a faster battle strategy?

My best so far is 4:40 (SGB timing) taking Bulbasaur. Here's why I think taking Bulbasaur is better than taking Charmander: - Bulbasaur is slower than rival's Charmander whereas Charmander is faster than rival's Squirtle. - For some reason, Growl doesn't seem to fail, at least when you use it (barring 1/256 chance). So with Bulbasaur, you can make Tackle miss, but with Charmander, you must rely on 1/256 miss. - If I am correct about max damage occurring rarely, then max damage (critical hit) of rival Charmander's Scratch on 10 defense Bulbasaur is 7, which means that Bulbasaur can be 3HKOed. In the glitched route I tried to describe, after you warp, you walk as follows: up 1, left 8 (right beside the trainer), right 15 (just as trainer leaves left side of screen), left 2, up 1 Finally GB timing is faster than SGB timing, but of course GB mode cannot be accepted.

This is why I choose to use the GB setting, whats the reason for it not being accepted anyway?

It's in the rules:

If GB mode was allowed, certainly the published runs would have used it.

Good job. The new route saves 10 seconds, bringing the run to 4:30!

Any reason why this is being done on the Green version? I'd recommend using the Blue version, since the non Japanese players never seen it.

I thought the glitch only worked on the green version? Anyhow gocha is it you putting up those vids because two different people submitted the last two.

The glitch only works on the Japanese version (either of the very first pair of Pocket Monsters games). They fixed it for all subsequent games.

I'd prefer if the run was done on the Green version, just so we can avoid people thinking that it works on the more familar updates of the game.

I think doing a run on the green version would only serve to heighten people's curiosity about whether the glitch works on the red/blue versions and would lead to a flooding of posts by newcomers demanding if that is possible.
