I suspect you can find a way to get from Paseo to Arima without bringing up any menus. I've done it many times on a console.

Probably by halting for the same ammount of time?

Hmm.. I thought of another thing. Hinas is learned at level 7 which would take too long time to level up to so early in the game. Instead I thought of buying escapipe and telepipe from the Genstore in Paseo. However those costs rather much in the beginning, but it would sure be good to have instead of backtracking all the time.

Ah, great idea. You'll figure out some way to cover the cost.

Here is a useful list for PS2 of all the monsters with HP/EXP/MES: http://www.monmouth.com/~colonel/videogames/phantasystar2/monsters.html Has anyone figured out how to manipulate luck in this game? It would be pretty slick to see somebody finish the game with just ROLF (and NEI for a while) by not visiting his house ever, if it is possible to manipulate the game in such a way. :)

Rofl, Frenom. keith_phillips, I'd be more interested in seeing a fastest completion run, or perhaps a fastest completion run with the stipulation that you have to keep Nei even after the Neifirst battle. (I think it's possible to do that.) I've actually done a Rolf only run on a console and it's not terribly difficult, and it's not as time consuming as you might expect, either, because he levels so fast alone. In fact, even in 4p console runs, once I reached Noah I used to go there with just Rolf to level him alone. (Megid until you run out of TP, Neisword back to Lutz, heal, return to Noah.)

Yea sorry to resurrect such an old topic, lol. But this one I was really interested in and was disappointed that some sort of PS2 run wasn't finished yet. I wonder if it would be possible to make a ROLF only run be the fastest one, with luck manip. involved? Anyways I ran across this posted in a forum so it might be useful for someone that attempts a PS2 run. Here is a list of the XP that the guy had for levelling up ROLF.

Probably not, it's undoubtedly more efficient to be able to attack with 4 people each round than just one, no?

Yea you are probably right, but was just thinking that if the rounds could be manipulated for maximum damage for the player, and minimal or no damage for the enemies.. :) Some people said you could finish the game in the high teens or something which was interesting. Edit: This thread is making me want to go play some Phantasy Star 2 goodness. It's been so many years. :)

I only made a short test on this Frenom, to see if it was possible. This game suffers alot from desyncs. So beware! It doesn't care about frame perfection while walking the world map in the matter of enemy encounters. I haven't really calculated on the span of frames which this occurs on. So it will be a good surprise for you. ;) I have no plans right now to take on this game as I have to little knowledge about it generally. I used to play this game alot, but I'm not hardcore.

I've begun a speedrun on PS2 for a while now. Just because I think the awesome series deserves one for each. PS1 and PS3 already have one done. I know of no glitches to use, except one place where I can walk through a wall, saving about 5 seconds (whoopee). I know encounters are timed so you can avoid everything except the boss battles. Right now I`m facing Neifirst with everyone lvl 1 (after 33 minutes). Not really doable, so next tasks are leveling up, defeating Neifirst, then walking around till the end of the game, where I will level up once again before DarkForce and MotherBrain. I understand it may be boring as hell to watch though... I think I've done a good job planning the route. I believe 33 minutes is about as good as it can get, getting to Neifirst with optimum equipment and the MUSIK technique. I still need to level up, but I know a quick way to do it. Interesting bits may be where I first sell all my stuff to buy the necessary escapipes and expensive telepipes, so I walk around on MOTA nekkid. Later it's payback time for being so expensive so I steal 10+ Moon Dews from his shop and sell it to him 6000 meseta a piece (Shir fans rejoice:) ) Otherwise it's quite boring I guess... I`m just walkin' without encounters. I don't understand precisely how the randomness works or how battles can be influenced other than timing. Everyone was found by trial and error (making huge logs with stealing and trying to find some pattern. Getting those Moon Dews was hell...) Perhaps someone is willing to help me with that? Let me know if you guys are interested in the run or the gmv I have so far.

Here you go. After standing in front of Neifirst it just looks like normal gameplay. Iwas just testing some things, sorry about that. I`m not gonna confront her at lvl 1 ofcourse. I'd like to hear your comments. Plus possible improvements. I can't imagine having done everything perfectly the first time. The only reason I haven't made a run of this game is the horrible desyncing problem. I never even got to test any of my plans :P I'll check this out when I get home.

I did start on a test run long ago. But due to desyncs I stopped. Some stuff that might be helpful is to use the equipments as items. Some of them can cast magic. Not sure how powerful it was. Haven't played the game for some time now. Someone should really make a hack of this game to allow faster movements of the characters. It's just so boring to watch them walk. Takes for ever. I wish you the best of luck with this game. I will watch it later on and give you some comments about it. Edit: I have now watched the run. Thank god for fast forward! :D The run desyncs at the Neifirst battle. It's kind of impressive so far. I hope it will be a good final gmv. Also, it would be awesome if you could provide a savestate that brings you right in front of Neifirst so I don't have to fast forward everything again. I forgot to make one my self. :) Cheers so far!

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!! I just discovered the most awesomest bug (glitch?, coding error? idunno) in this game!!!! I don't want to spoil it yet. Just wait till you see the run which with this new discovery will be done this weekend. I have to redo some large parts. A lot of work down the drain :( But I can speedrun through the dungeons faster than in real playing time, so it shouldn't take too long. You'll hear from me this weekend. I promise. (Crosses fingers). EDIT: Come to think of it. For the sake of getting the absolute fastest time. I just realize I have to redo the whole game...

I promised an update. Today I've planned the entire route for the rest of the game. Which is the grunt work. I hope to finish the game tomorrow. Currently unlocking the dams and the dreaded 3 rounds of survival against the army eyes is coming up...

To avoid desyncs, before starting the movie, do the following:
  1. Go to your gens save directory (the one in "options->directories->SRAM backup" -- default is your gens directory) and delete the game's srm file
  2. Open the rom, in gens and let it run for about 30 seconds.
  3. Close gens
  4. Go to your gens save directory (same as in step 1), and bring up the srm file's properties. (right click menu->properties)
  5. Check "read only"
  6. Hit "OK"
  7. record the movie as normal, you only need to do this once.
Viewers should perform steps 1-3 before playing the movie in order to ensure that the movie syncs correctly. For making the gmv, you should also ensure that you are using the latest gens version 9z or later, as it has expanded savestates to prevent desyncs from occuring.

Grrr. I found out I had made some stupid mistakes near the end (I had all Nei items). So I figured I'd do a large part over (_again_. I know all the dungeons by heart by now). But then my harddisk crashed on me. (It lasted a good 11 years, so it's not that surprising). I lost some files, but fortunately I could salvage my speedrun (phew). Now as soon as I can get my joystick to work again I will continue. So there'll be a few weeks delay...
