Some BitTorrent users seem to act strangely. If the download was slow, they close the download window as soon as the download is completed. If the download was fast, they aren't so hurried on that, and they let it upload for a while. This is completely the opposite of what it should be. When downloading is slow, that's exactly when uploaders are most urgently needed (to make downloads faster )...

When I download movies from you, I start them going. When I notice they are finished, I watch it once, then close Bit Torrent. A game like SMB won't get that much extra bandwidth from me, but say the 40 min Simon's Quest will.

I use to close it when it has been on 0 kb/s up for a while, or when I have uploaded more than double the size of the download. If it still has very high upload rate by then I use to keep it going for a while longer.

I usually download 3 movies at a time overnight (when i'm asleep) so my bitTorrent is uploading for 6-8 consecutive hours until I close it in the morning. Good job with the quick reply btw ;)

My downloads with the torrents are really fast, i downloaded the Morimoto's Rockman 2 in about 2-3 hours, aprox. (that is fast compared as how it was before).

compared to the movies at greatstreaming, bittorrent is blazingly fast. I managed to hit 190 kBps average on the new smb3j movie (using 26 minutes on the entire download), while greatstreaming won't give me more than 12 kBps at best. I've kept smb3j up for the past two hours, and i keep the torrents up until they start disrupting my playing (CPU-slowdowns/lag).

For those who started downloading the smb3j movie immediately when I published it it took about 6 hours to get it, probably more, because my only seed had a cap of 6 kB/s upload.

I don't normally seed because I'm on a 56k, but some nights I just leave it open, although I doubt I'm helping much...Meh, it's still something. :)

Yes, it is still something and helps other modem users a lot. Plus it helps keeping the torrent alive.

btw anyone know how could i use bittorrent on polytechnic/university's computers? They have huge upload capability as we all know and i would love to use it when i'm on computer class to serve downloaders. however it always timeouts and i haven't got it to download or upload anything. I tried changin ports to bigger numbers like 65500 but no luck :(

The Universities and Work Computers have a firewall that restrict the use of "Share" programs, you will never connect to bittorrent in the Uni, same happens at my work.

theoretically, you could push them out on port 22 (used for browsing), but network admins would definently complain...

Normally I leave the finished torrent file on for some time. Doesn't matter much for me. Enough upload :D

From my perspective, it's not that illogical, as that's typically what I do. If I'm on from home, my upload is capped at 15 K/s, so I typically close my download as soon as I see it's finished so that I can download other stuff. If I'm on campus I will leave them on, or if I think about it I will even start seeding files I've had downloaded forever. Since I can upload more there, it ends up downloading quicker and finishes faster. Aside from these two points, if one downloads the file quickly and notices it, they might likely close the torrent. However, those who take a long time to download are more likely to leave theirs on for nights or a weekend. So, although the ideal situation is that people leave them open when slow, since people close them based on circumstance, I think it is expected that people act in the opposite way.
