I'm 99% sure it happened because one of the system files got corrupted during the sudden restart. Why did the restart happen is open for debate.

This happened because you don't know how to properly fix a Windows PC. You should have taken it somewhere or you should make friends with nerds and geeks. As for why it broke, I couldn't tell you, I don't have enough information. If you need help in the future with this, turn off automatic restart on system failure, and find a place to upload the contents of your C:\Windows\Minidump directory so people in the know can repair your computer.

This weekend microsoft pushed out a security fix which also wanted to reboot my computer. If you wait 2 days (tell windows NO), it will force you to reboot... Although this may be a reason I doubt it is your reason.

You can't predict what Windows is going to do. I had a machine run 98 for well over two years without a hiccup, then one day I booted it up and my win.ini and system.ini files had mysteriously gone missing. Thank god I was able to drop my HD into another machine and copy my stuff before wiping the drive.
