I play Counter-Strike: Source and recently began playing 1.6 again. It's weird getting back into 1.6 again but it feels a lot less random than Source's crappy hitbox. I enjoy Source more for some reason though. Probably because I've grown accustomed to it.

UT2004 and sometimes Quake3. I used to play UT99, but it's broke lately and I don't know why. So...

I've considered getting into those "deathmatch" type games. The only ones I've played are HL2:DM and DM mods on CS:S. What do you recommend for DM games?

Quake 3 is the only FPS that's been installed on my system since the dawn of time. However, lately I'm leaning closer towards Half-Life series and related games (except CS, which I've always disliked). For DM, look into Quake Wars. It seems on par with Q3 when it comes to fun value involved.

Thanks. I'll look into that one. And that reminds me that I'm also considering on purchasing Team Fortress 2. It looks fun but I'm waiting for my friend to consider as well (I hate playing alone). Anybody here tried it yet?

back in the days of CS 7.0b to CS 1.1 I've been playing that a lot and had some fun coding AI enemys (bots) for it. Then I switched to Quake3/defrag, played it for years, then lost motivation after a hd crash ate my records. nowadays I'm just slaughtering poor bots on UT and UT2004 when I'm bored. InstaGib ftw! oh yeah, I've played a couple of the popular single player FPS as well, but I generally play them only once, mostly for the story. Sometimes I don't even bother playing them and just watch a speedrun.

Haha, same here. And I also liked CS in its early days. Regarding Team Fortress, I had little experience with it, but it's certainly less about raw deathmatch fun and more about good teamwork, so that you are able to use the characters' different abilities to their full potential.

I just played through Portal, and it is amazingly good, although tragically short. Although, that game is more of a "FPTAOTP" (First Person Teleport All Over The Place) game.

I play through Quake once every summer. I also enjoy glitching the hell out of Deus Ex. Sometimes, I like to singlehandedly pick on a team of low level bots in Q3A. Makes me feel like a big man.

Unreal Tournament, the golden oldie. 2003 and 2004 hasn't even been close :( I might add that Far Cry is the best single player campaign FPS I have ever played up until this point of my life. Sorry Quake2 :( EDIT: Damnit, I was just gonna try an FPS again and now I'm stuck :(

Long time ago I deathmatch-played Doom, Doom 2 and Duke 3D via modem line or LAN. EDIT: Oh, and Descent. Later, I played Half-Life in singleplayer mode, and in deathmatch mode in LAN. Recently after a long pause I started playing Portal, and after that I played through Half-Life 2, and I'm now going at Half-Life 2 episode 1. Blublu: I believe the official term is First-person puzzle. Though yours is an adequate description as well.

Doom, Wolfenstein and Duke 3D. That's it.

I've played Half-life, Half-life 2, Quake 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Blood (a looong time ago)... probably some more that I can't remember right now.

I enjoyed the early FPS games (Wolfenstein 3D blew my mind when I was in high school and then Doom positively stunned me) but something about them gradually turned me off. I think it may have been the escalating gore levels in games like Unreal Tournament. It's one thing to shoot a rocket at a zombie in Doom and see a 2D "splat" but the 3D characters being maimed in UT freaked me out after a while. The N64 had two great FPS games in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark but I can't remember any others that left such a vivid impression on me. What's good that's out there now? I have a decent PC laptop which lacks high powered 3D graphics, a Nintendo DS and a Wii.

Lately I've been playing Bioshock, ET:QW, and the Orange Box. I played so much Q3 back in the day, especially Q3F, that I failed out of school. The Call of Duty series is pretty good, too. I never liked CS, I always thought Urban Terror was more fun, especially since you could climb anything you could reach.

I actually haven't enjoyed a first-person shooter since Turok 2 for N64. For the most part, I blame this on control issues; Turok 2 and its predecessor brought me up on left hand look, right hand walk/strafe, which no other shooter since has implemented properly. I bought Halo on hype alone, and hated it on account of the southpaw control setup being so terrible - contorting my right hand to be able to walk and jump at the same time was inexcusable. Beyond that, the Metroid Prime series is all I can get into. Prime 3 plays like a dream, even if the camera lens effect is irritating.

Resident Evil 4. I have only played the GCN version, but hear pretty good reviews about the Wii installment. IIRC, it is only 30 bucks, so not too much money down the drain if you don't like it.

Someday, we'll make a really awesome TAS of Portal.

Funny you should mention that, I've seen vids of the Wii version on YouTube and they look super cool. I played a little bit of the GCN version too when my friends had it. I suppose it's not, strictly speaking, an FPS, but that might not be an issue.

And then there will be delicious and moist cake. I used to play UT, UT2k3, UT2k4 and thats about it. I played the UT3 demo and thought it was the same old stuff. I've played HL2 and all the HL2 Episodes, along with Portal. I have yet to try Team Fortress 2.

TimeSplitters. More specifically, TimeSplitters 3. The only Doom-like game I've played was Hexen for N64. I just remembered that game a few days ago. Metroid Prime 3.

While I've been playing qw/q3 (and mods. midair=lots and lots of fun :D) matches most of the time for friendly matches, I do think the UT series is way underestimated. UT99 movement is really impressive once you get away from the first shallow impression you get from it. A few years ago, I bought an ut2003 key on ebay for like $6 and I was very impressed. Even though most of the tricks are hardcoded (sidesteps and dashes etc), there's just so much you do with them.
