It is okay to use a controller attachment. Right? If there are like exception rules, I think Kirby's Dream Land 3 would fit them well. Kirby's running and jumping mechanics are really messed up when used on the key board. KDL3 is one of those games where jump height is determend by how long you hold the jump button. On the keyboard, pressing it on just one frame makes it count as holding it for like, three frames. Also, It would be impossible to pull off all of the input on the keyboard since it can only handle three keys at a time. So what I'm asking is, Controller attachments are allowed. Right?

As long as you have a valid movie file at the end of it all, I'd say anything goes as far as turning the input into the file.

Like sgrunt said, one of the basic principles of making a TAS is that it does not matter at all what method you use to make your TAS. The *only* thing that matters is that you end up with a valid input file. That's it. So feel freee to use whatever enhancements you can think of. That's what we do here. Also recommended is: Have fun and enjoy what you're doing!

Controllers aren't a good idea for N64 games, because they're not very precise with the joystick. However, for SNES it should be find.

I'm honestly curious why you even need to ask this. What makes you think it would not be ok? These are *tool-assisted* speedruns. We use tools, any tools, to create runs as close to perfection as possible. Why would it make any sense to say "everything else is ok, but using a game controller is prohibited, because we say so"?

Although I agree it seems like a somewhat strange original question, I think this sentence is downright wrong, as there are a couple types of tools we don't allow. In-game cheat aren't allowed even though they were a part of the original game programming, and hacking tools such as game genies are similarly not allowed. I agree they shouldn't be allowed, but also believe they are tools that we could use to our benefit to create faster (and possibly more entertaining) runs. So maybe while it was obvious to us, the tools we understand to be usable may not be as obvious to new members.

Are we talking about using a gamepad for recording input to a TAS? Of course this is allright. For all we care you could use a joystick or whatever tool you want. We don't care how you record your input, as long as you follow the other rules this is totally allright. In theory, you could record a TAS simply by editing in input to the movie with TAS movie editor, as long as the movie file achievies its goals, it's ok. If it wasn't permitted to use a gamepad, they would have to take down every one of my TASes... :P

If you make an N64 movie, better skip the controller. For non-N64 games, if used with frame advance, why not?

It was a silly question I guess. I just thought that it might screw up the final movie if the input wasn't on the keyboard or something.

What I meant was that any tools to create the movie file, ie. the file containing timed keypresses, is ok. Emulators, macros, robots, hex-editors... anything goes, as long as the result is a valid movie file. You can't create a valid movie file eg. with game genie.

For those discussing controllers with Nintendo 64 emulation, the (unfortunately standardized) PlayStation style controller is quirky at best for Nintendo 64 games, however these controllers not only work great for Nintendo 64 games but at least as well on nearly all other emulated platforms (obviously the PlayStation style will work better on Sony emulated systems). The 6 buttons on the right model the A, B, and C buttons perfectly, and it has L and R on the top. It has two more buttons on the bottom on both sides, so the one on the left makes a perfect Z and the one on the right makes a good Start. The POV hat (direction pad) on the left rolls nicely (as apposed to the PlayStation controllers that wear out your thumbs when trying to do roll moves in fighting games) and has nice snap-back. Finally, you have the two analog sticks. The right one is not needed, while the left one mimics a real Nintendo 64 stick more accurately than the PlayStation controllers. It is slightly tighter than a real one, but that eventually goes away and it is easy to adjust. It additionally includes rumble support, though I think emulators do not take advantage of this. I have two of them because they work so well, and it allows my friends to play on equal grounds too. Definitely recommended if you play any Nintendo 64 games on emulators. L. Spiro
