I think it's done as fast as possible, I did it at 6% speed and tried a few times and always got the same result.
I agree with that it has slower reaction time than Zelda, but I disagree that you did it as fast as possible. http://bisqwit.iki.fi/kala/startr1.fmv does it clearly faster than in your movie. Star Tropics requires to hold the button for two frames and release it for two frames. And that's what I did.

Sorry for picking on this kind of insignificant thing though. Similarly, are you sure you react to the dialogs (what people say) in as swift manner as possible? While I understand that in Star Tropics, it takes some frames when the boy turns around and when the people you talk to turn around, it still looked a little slow... But I did like the cavern scenes. You handled the battles very quickly and the Michael Jacksonish jumping looked cool too :) Btw, hex-editing at FCM files is going to be even harder than hex-editing at other movie files, because FCMs are compressed.

Well, since Zer0 said he isn't feeling motivated, I'll take it upon myself to do this childhood favorite of mine. I'm right at the start of the first dungeon, and already 128 frames faster than him due to optimizing the start menu and dialogue. He did use the best order of talking to the villagers, actually, but didn't execute it as fast as possible. EDIT: Chapter 1 is done with a time of 17116 frames (4:45). Up to the point where Zer0 stopped, I was 387 total frames faster than him, so I saved 259 in the dungeon. This was accomplished almost entirely through the usage of the torch weapon. It is twice as powerful as the yoyo and only takes very slightly longer to execute, so it helps a lot vs. rats, snakes, and the boss. Oh yeah, and special weapons don't carry over from one dungeon to another. I might have considered saving all the torches for the 2nd boss if that were the case, but nope, you lose them after the first dungeon. It's up on my Filespace, so check it out and tell what you think. =) -Josh

Very nice, mate! Good you picked that one up, I'm not sooo experienced in it anyway and I haven't got time for too many runs, so I can more concentrate on other runs, especially Illusion of Gaia and Secret of Mana :]

I didn't notice that anybody replied to this question yet. I am getting the same 403. Did speedruns.org get shut down or something? Anybody know?

Thanks, and I wish you good luck with your movies. Secret of Mana MUST be done! =) And yeah, speedruns.org appears to be down. Luckily I still have their videos somewhere... -Josh

Thanks Bisqwit. =) Right now I'm trying to figure out what to do regarding heart containers. I need to collect one of the first two in order to use the Shooting Star, and three total in order to get the Super Nova. There's one in Chapter 6 which appears to be almost directly on the required path, but the rest require you to go out of your way in one way or another. Will do testing here before continuing the run... -Josh

Off the topic of Star Tropics; the site has been down for a long while. Slightly annoying for me, as I would have liked to get Lezard's Ninja Gaiden 1 run from there to compare it to mine. Josh you mention you have the runs from that site saved somewhere, is it possible for you to get me that run? I'm on like version 7 of my run (and i'm not even completed to game yet! That is what I get for running around in the game for fun) because I keep finding things which can improve my time by a few frames, and would like to see if i'm missing anything.

b, I could send it to you if you have AIM or something. Note that I only have the AVI's, though, and Palatinum's were way bigger than the ones on this site. On topic, is there anywhere on the web I can find complete overworld maps of this game, or savestates for each chapter? I don't feel like playing through most of the game to figure out the heart containers, though I will if it comes down to that. -Josh

That didn't help out a whole lot, actually. Thanks for the effort, though...I'll just figure this out myself. -Josh

Thanks again for the effort, but... The issue is that none of these maps give a detailed picture of where each heart container is. It's all tunnels or vague overworld stuff. Don't worry, I'll just do this one the ol' fashioned way... -Josh

Sorry if this doesn't help a lot, it's been ages since I played this. But I know at least there's a heart container in chapter two on the overworld map, you walk through a hidden passage to get to it. But I believe it shouldn't be much out of the way. It's in that little area with two blocks of grass surrounded by mountains in the northeast part of the map. Unfortunately I cannot remember precisely which false wall leads to it.

I think he wants it to know exact distances he needs to walk, and which are the least out of the way. I'll continue to look for one. Also please do send me over AIM, we live fairly close together, so assuming your not on 56k it shouldn't take too long. I added you, or atleast the name which your AIM button directs to.

Well, this is good news...turns out you don't need any heart containers to get either of the upgraded weapons. The game automatically gives you a certain number of hearts after each chapter. And FYI b, my internet went down for most of yesterday and this morning. I'll leave AIM on today and should be hanging around a fair amount. Just to let you know, your video of 4:08 through the first 3 acts was about 25-26 seconds faster than Lezard's up to that point. -Josh

And don't forget that you get ALL the hearts in the Alien Spaceship that you don't have... ie. if there's 16 total and you have 5.. when you enter the correct area of the ship it gives you the remaining 11 hearts. If you can survive with the limited amount of heart containers until that point, you can avoid having to get the hidden containers and save a ton of time... granted it takes a few seconds for all the hearts to be added at the end, it's a trifle. Nice, thanks for the tips! And just to let everyone know, I am going to sacrifice speed for one thing which I feel would be more entertaining: A no-damage movie. Taking damage in this game saves very little time and looks awful, plus I remember it being quite hard and would myself be impressed to watch a no-damage run. -Josh

Remember to do the rotatejump trick (as shown by zer0) a couple of times somewhere. It looks cool :)

As a matter of fact, I did this after the second boss died. I need to redo that fight because I just figured out a way to improve it, but I'll keep that in there. -Josh

Just to let you guys know, I'm redoing everything from the first room with rats in Chapter 1. I discovered that the closer you are to an enemy, the less time the yoyo takes to execute. This is a pretty decent improvement which may add up to over a second in what I've done thus far. I'll post an update when I'm done with Chapter 2 again. EDIT: Chapter 1 is done, 16 frames faster than before. -Josh

Well, holee crapola. Just finished Chapter 2, and I'm 25 SECONDS FASTER than my previous movie. The yoyo thing probably didn't even add up to a second, but I managed to get about 20 jillion times better luck manipulation with the 2nd boss. That's where just about all of the improvement comes from...I kill him before I could even start attacking last time. So the total time is now 36141 frames (10:02). It's up on my filespace, ch-ch-check it out! =) -Josh

Nice job! It's a good thing you restarted. I'm looking forward to the rest of this movie; this was one of my favorite games back in the day.
