I have a request for somebody to do a run of Sonic Spinball. My college friends and I play that game all the time and really suck at it. I'd love to see somebody play it with some skill for once. Anybody interested in making this movie? Or will I just have to continue to suffer with our horribly playing? Thanks! Ev PS If I've posted this request in the wrong section let me know where I should post these in the future. I'm not afraid to admit I'm a n00b on these message boards.

The thing about Spinball is you can get as high a score as you want, practically by just bouncing up and down in some places.

I could have sworn I saw a Spinball run in the submissions, or perhaps just an old forum topic before the genesis category existed... what happened to it?

There is, and you can still see the .gmv for it (click "view all submissions"). I cancelled it, mostly because it was boring: *flip* There's an emerald. *flip* There's another emerald *flip* There's the boss *jump, bang bang bang bang bang* There goes the boss. Repeat four times. Also, I'm convinced that, although the shots go where I need them, they could go a lot smoother (Sonic bounces around a *lot* especially going into funnels and such). I'm pretty sure I have the basic path down, though. The bonus stages don't help either. A 100% run could be interesting, though (jackpot in all levels, passing the bonus stages instead of letting the ball bounce around 5-10 times before finding the bottom).

I just want to see that final stupid level beaten! I have a mac so I can't view .gmv files because my emulator won't support them. Sad! I think doing a speed run of lowest score possible (not including bonus levels) would be interesting... anybody else think so? Ev

With the recent outbreak of improvements it's about time it get's its own topic, as there currently isn't any place to discuss them.

Not sure if I'll get this done before Flip's submission get's published, but I've found the RAM address for the first boss's tail at 00FF84B3. It takes 54 hits (running from 0 to 54) for the tail to bust off, and anywhere from 3 to 6 additional hits to finish off the body. I'm not quite sure why yet, but I suspect it's due to additional hits on the tail during the delay between hit 54 and the time it actually blows off. I restarted my entire run, and managed to save some more time in the beginning of the level, along with faster suicides (the moving Robotnik in the bonus can be manipulated both by the tilting and the frame on which the last hit is delivered on the previous boss. As I said in the submission page, I'm currently 302 frames ahead, and I'll keep updating here I guess. But I'm going to put in a lot more trial and error with this as compared to last time, so it may take a while. EDIT: Bah, I'm stuck trying to get the second cork with the "stop in the loop" glitch, however I managed to save some more time by not swinging on the ledge after the second emerald. Overall, about 345 frames ahead, but this will take quite a while, especially since I have a feeling that the showdown emeralds might be able to be skipped by glitching into the rocket. However I have absolutely no proof of this, just a suspicion.

Hey Flip, any hints on getting stuck in the right loop on level 2? I've noticed it's much more difficult to catch the small lip on the outer ring than on the left side. I was curious if you had a method, or just used trial and error to get it to happen.

Nope, sorry. I just tried to aim inwards along the loop, but most of it was just trial and error

Well after 5 sunny days in Orlando, I'm back home, and back to TASing (while not playing some variation of Final Fantasy). I'm still stuck on trying to manipulate the best possible way to get stuck in the cork spiral on the right side, but I'm working on that and any possible route changes on level 3 and shortcuts on level 4. I don't have an estimated time of completion for this, but at most I have 6 minutes and 15 seconds left:)

Here's the new route through The Machine http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1990463144/Sonic%20Spinball-Machine%20route.gmv It's not completed, nor fully optimised, but I'm sure you'll get the idea. This route doesn't involve wasting loads of time by waiting for the cages to finish rotating, so it's much better. You don't even need to do the glich to get the second caged emerald early either. As you can see, the timing works out perfect anyway, so you can just enter the cage normally. You'd have to save like 5 seconds in order for that glitch to be useful with this route, which I doubt is possible.

That's something close to what I had envisioned, but skipping the emerald in the animal prison was something I hadn't thought of. I'm assuming that emerald would be collected last, but there isn't a very easy way to get from that room to the boss room. What is your thinking for emeralds 4, 5 and the boss?

After that it's the same as the current route really. 1......_____..........5 .......|...3...|............ .......|____|............ ..2.............x.........y ....................4........ The existing route is 2-1-3-4-5. After collecting the final emerald sonic still ends up in the central room. He slides down the right hand side into the warp pod x. He comes out at Y, goes up the shaft and around into the boss room. The proposed new route is 1-2-4-5-3, which still finished with sonic in that central room, just in a different positon. You can still use the same method to leave. Just jump out, and use the warp pod x. I've already checked to see if you can use the super bouncing principles of the cages to give sonic enough speed to squeeze out of any of the shaft exits at the top, but it's proved impossible. It instantly overrides his movement and makes him slip straight back down anyway; so the bottom corners are the only exits to the room. The left hand side doesnt have anything useful about it, but the right hand side has that handy warp, so that's the only option here.

Ah, I see what you're saying, I forgot that emerald 5 emptied right out into the animal prison. I also have tried to use the cages to boost into the boss room, but it's proved impossible for me too. I also found a couple interesting glitches that have (so far) been worthless. There's a spot in the upper left corner of The Machine that allows you to fall through the wall, but unfortunately it just drops you down to a lower platform (it's the wall to the left of the two buzzards guarding the entrance to the boss area). I have also been able to get myself stuck into the up and down tubes that lead directly to the boss, but I haven't been able to do anything with it. And I'm still stuck on the 3rd emerald of level 2... damn corks.

It can sometimes be quick to hit the cork, go out of the semi-circle, hit a flipper at the right angle and have it blast you back into the cork. At least that's how I do it when I play normally. It can't be more than a few frames off from glitching a stop and slowly falling back onto the cork like you did in your previous movie. Or is my memory bad and it's actually much slower? (I don't know how this was taken care of in the old, first, run; didn't watch it)

In the published run I did the semi-circle, then blasted back to the cork. Flip stopped in the semi-circle and fell back, which is the faster method. If I use the flipper, I lose roughly 35 frames when compared to Flip's submission, so I'm going to try and keep at it. For some reason, the glitch is just much harder to try and optimize on the right side of the level compared to the left. EDIT: Success! Not only did I get it to look soooper sweet, I saved another second, so I'm up to 424 frames saved total.

Well I'm up to the Lava Powerhouse boss, which I am not looking forward to, because Flip's version looks incredibly optimal, but I'll see what I can do with it over the next couple days. Here's the WIP. Currently 507 frames ahead.

Looks really good, though I wonder if maybe you should spin dash to the right when you go up the middle first blaster the second time to avoid collecting more rings. Don't ring tallies add frames at the end of the level? Anyway, keep it up :)

Unlike the other sonic games, the time bonus and ring bonus screens can be skipped with a simple press of A,B, or C right before they start to tally. Once skipped, the total score shows for a set amount of time. So the extra rings only act to add to the score, and does not waste any time at all. In a major turn of events, I'm done with Lava Powerhouse and the 2nd bonus level, and am now 930 frames (15.5 seconds) ahead. Major improvements include a 3 second improvement to the second boss, and a 5 second improvement to the second bonus, thanks in large part to Flip not skipping the "You Lose" message after the 3rd ball has disappeared. I'm now pretty confident that I'll be able to break the 8 minute mark! Edit numero dos: Done with level 3 and the associated bonus, and I'm 1260 frames (21 seconds) improved. 4 seconds of savings within that 8 minute barrier....

Nice, those two cork loops certainly put mine to shame, I'm surprised they could be pulled off so fluently. Great job

Well I've finally concluded I'm not gonna get around to finishing it, so here's an old Wip for those interested plus some known improvements. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/674312144/Sonic%20Spinball.gmv Improvements so far are using only 3 bounces on level 1, and a few frames saved on level 2. Not in the wip yet, but there's a few nice improvements in level 3: http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/867/sonicspinball000.png http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/9418/sonicspinball001.png http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/2759/sonicspinball002a.png First the much better opening strat, you can bounce off the left flipper, into the right bumper and that'll get you down that left hand tube a lot faster, and with some initial speed too. For a better refinement, you can clip off that red shocker thing for even more speed. In fact, if you do this properly, you'll have enough speed at the bottom to be able to bounce straight up to the above flipper, without using those steam piston things, which is always nice. Haven't found anything else in the main route, but the boss can be improved by launching sonic over the machine and getting him stuck bouncing parallel to the tube. http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/8903/sonicspinball003a.png Finally on level 4, a better method for getting the emeralds on the sides. These techniques have a few quirks needed to be worked out still; as I said I never got round to finishing them, but there's certainly improvements to the current run.

So, there's a new skip that allows you to fight the Machine boss without any emeralds... https://clips.twitch.tv/ReliableFunClintmullinsSmoocherZ A couple of people have been looking into it but can't really consistently replicate it... there appear to be game-long frame rules in play or something like that. Is anyone able to look into this and make sense of when/why it occurs?

Regretfully I haven't been able to produce that yet, but in other news there's also a level 4 skip available, see his Latest run. That one is far easier to reproduce thankfully, so this now means we skip 3/4 of the levels in a TAS :)
