For those of you who follow the National Hockey League, you may notice that the Toronto Maple Leafs are in second-last in the Eastern Conference. This, combined with humiliating losses to LA (last in the West) and San Jose have all but cemented my grief. Buffalo Bills fans should be sympathetic to my plight, as the two teams' plights are similar. We haven't won a Stanley Cup SINCE 1967, and I doubt I'll see the Leafs win one before I die. AND I'M SEVENTEEN. So, you ask, why do I continue to support the Laughing-stocks...er, Leafs? Ah, you just made your point: I am a FAN, not a SUPPORTER. I do not like what head coach Paul Maurice is doing with his lines, or John Ferguson Jr. making ludicriously large contracts for players who either score on their own net or sit around waiting for the other team to take the puck from them. Not since the days of Ebenezer Scrooge himself, Harold Ballard, have we seen a Leaf team this half-baked. But I digress. Even with the pathetic managerial issues, I still cheer for the Leafs, hoping faintly that somehow, SOMETHING's gotta give. With a recent team photo session canceled, I can only hope that the Leafs are rebuilding their head office - now maybe they'll do something about the guys who actually skate.

I can sympathize with you, with my stepdad being a Leafs fan, and having rooted for the Expos back when they were still a team. It seems too many Canadian sports teams are doomed to suckage. Ah, well. The Flames are having a decent year.

*claps* Back in the ol' days, when the Leafs could actually get somewhere in the playoffs (even if the Cup was hopeless), I considered myself to be a fan, just out of a kind of Toronto patriotism (same went for the Raptors and even the Blue Jays), even though it was clear they were deteriorating. I think the 2004 playoffs was the last season that I watched the Leafs specifically to see if they would actually win or not.

This is a big part of why I don't get terribly involved with professional sports. I'm not sure how my mom does it.

It's hard being a true team fan. That's why I'm not one. I used to like the Vancouver Canucks, but I stopped watching them even though they are winning now. I'm not even a hockey fan anymore. I'm more interested in tennis. Australian Open underway.

This is why I watch the Marlies now. Also their tickets are realistically attainable.

Two reasons: 1. In Canada, hockey isn't exactly life, but intense competition for the faithful. I remember hearing stories about when Quebec City used to have a team, you could NOT walk into Montreal with a Nordiques jersey on (or the Canadiens fans would mob you). Since we're not necessarily a violent country (Harper's campaign in Afghanistan doesn't count, it was a security mission gone horribly wrong) this is the way we take out our frustration. Mind you, a Canadian team hasn't won the Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. We're getting closer, though. 2. What's living without some tough times? Part of being a fan is enduring the crap years. It's called the "there's-always-next-year" syndrome. It happens a lot in sports. Again, as I stated in my previous post, I am a fan of the team and its storied history, and I hope the Leafs might be able to turn this around and pull a Miracle Met out of their hat or something. Maybe. Pretty please?

At least your team has won a cup. I'm a Phoenix Coyotes fan, and even when they were the Winnipeg (sp?) Jets they didn't win one. At least this year the west conference is looking tight enough that the coyotes might make the playoffs...and thats all i can ask. Our team is full of up and coming rookies and a couple of vets. Next year indeed.

At least I don't have to deal with the Red Sox losing EVERY YEAR any more.

Maybe you should be a Red Wings/Ducks fan like me? It's hard being a Bears/Chargers fan, especially when both teams made it to the playoffs last year and choked.

If you ever want to ditch the Leafs and support a non-Leafs Canadian team, go for the Habs...most cup wins of any NHL team in history can't be bad, and they're still the latest Canadian team to win one (albeit like 15 years ago).

True, but it's you accepting them that matters. ;)

It's illegal here not to like it.

It's faster paced than baseball, requires more precision than basketball, and is more violent than football.

Watching dry rot set in is faster paced than baseball. Though I admit that it's actually fun to go to a game in person.
