Just watching the first three levels, I have several gripes. 1. why are you not running more often? you seem to slow down for reasons unknown (aside from 1 or 2 instances where you need to avoid damage, so you you dont die) 2. why do you take the time to hit that P button? why not skip it? 3. why did you feel the need to bounce on some of those music boxes; they tend to slow you down. 4. why did you collect three stars? the star animation thingy takes, like, 10 seconds to complete. if there was one place in your run that you should slow down, slowing down infront of the end-level box would be a good place to do it (so collect 2 stars and a flower). have you watched the tas of smb3? if not, you really should, in order to see some pointers on how to make your movie faster and look cleaner. (are you using frame advance?) edit: also, have you decided to not do the spades and all mushroom houses? your previous post says you will be, but you skipped all of the special areas (aside from the white mushroom house) in World 1. edit2: heh, misread. my apologies ^_^;

To the P-Switch: Notice a weird glitch where Mario goes through the floor and block slightly. This you can ONLY do in 1-2 because it's directly above the floor. No, I am not using Frame Advanced *hides* I do that in 1-4, I slow down for the block. Also, in 1-F I lose like 16 frames missing the orb droped from Boom-Boom. Will do a new run since now that I've actully watched full speed, I notice MANY mistakes.

It's really a pain to watch... And if you choose the the SMAS version you shall use L+R all the time, as that's a lot faster. And start using frame advance as well. It looks like you are playing in real time...

.....Ow. I have only done the coin ship once in World 5. Well, I can manage. Hopefully. White Houses will get me. Plus, that means going through 2-2 twice.
Why would you need to go through 2-2 twice?

well, what i would suggest would be to get the coin ship first, and (after beating all the levels for the world) come back and take on the hammer bros again.
I was considering the Coin Ship to be a substitute for the Hammer Bros. No need to re-enter the world.

That would work, too. You don't think the Coin Ships, White Mushroom Houses and Warp Whistles being "secrets" would necessitate their inclusion in a 100% run?

I'm trying to put up good 100% definitions, but yeah... But everyone have their own lame definitions. Like the one in LoZ... Worst ever.

I would need to go through 2-2 twice (without leaving the level) because in order to get the White House, you need to first get all the normal coins, then hit the P-Switch and colect the coins turned from blocks. I am making a new one that looks better, and I'm using Frame Advanced now. MAJOR EDIT: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/504878457/SMB3_SMAS_100_4.smv A whooping 702 frames faster than V3, but using same criteria comes V4, World 1.... again.

Still VERY unoptimized... As I said before: If you really want to do the All Stars version you shall use Left+Right all the time as it is faster. I saw at once on your rerecords count that this is far from optimal. Keep practicing though...

I'm confused on whether I should do L+R because some people hate it, and some people like it. Very confusing.

Then use the NES version of the game... It is the best option really.

For some odd reason, even when "Allow Left+Right" is checked, it won't allow left + right....

That's checked and it STILL won't let me. Maybe I should use a different version of snes9x.

Maybe your movie file's default setting was that Left+Right is off. When playing back and editing the movie, do what I mentioned above. Otherwise I have no idea...

That's probably it. EDIT: YES! I got it to work now, so up next: Version 5 w/ L+R glitch. EDIT EDIT: Here it is: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1734404459/SMB3_SMAS_100_5.smv

Pointers for you: - Don't slow down. If you collide with a wall or ... other undesired things happened then go back and correct it. - Make high quality movies. Many TASers spend hours and hours for a single spot in a level whereas you seem to rush through the worlds... Be patient. The more you worked on your movie the better it gets recognized afterwards. - Make use of savestates. - For the intro use frame advance and press A one frame and start one frame. This is a common technique that saves time if you don't want to find out the earliest possible frame to press start (or other buttons) on. - Remember you are aiming for the fastest time. Don't spend time on stomping gumbas if it slows you down. But try to do so without losing time, if possible. You just need to make the quality you make movies with better. So, I'm looking forward to a new version :) But please take some more time now.

1-1, 1-F, 1-5, and 1-A took FOREVAH to do, I kept running into blocks, walls, got hit by Podoboos, and kept getting hit by BBs. This is going to take longer than I thought (I thought it would take maybe 4-6 weeks)

One VERY unforgivable mistake in this last one is the hit you took on the flying ship. However, your runs do seem to be improving. Another thing you definitely should do when TASing is using the memory watcher. You'll want to keep track of values such as player X,Y, X velocity, and possibly several other values as well. Also, this video may prove helpful.

Funny thing, I used the 1-F trick IN that video to help me, but after about 50 tries, I cound not do it. Also, now that I see http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1611855621/SMB3%20100%25.smv I feel ashamed of ever doing it XD. (This is V1 done the same day I joined) Now I'm working on startagies through World 1. Any suggestions on 1-1 through 1-F?

You may be surprised to hear this, but 50 rerecords is actually a fairly small amount of attempts, even for moderately difficult maneuvers. And to fully optimize a moderately difficult part, expect to spend at least 10 times that amount. At least.

Since this is my first time even attempting a TAS, I have NO idea how much or how little different re-records are. Oh well. There's ALWAYS time for improvements :P. Could someone help me, Memory Watcher isn't working with SNES9XW Improv 9. You know, I wonder why there isn't a seprate All-Stars tricks page becuase many things you can do in SMAS you can't do in the oringal of the games.

So this site will have an any% run and a warpless run using the NES version... and the playaround run by genisto (and eventually this future 100%) on the SNES version? Really? I mean, I'd watch it, but it would have to be exceptionally TASed to be accepted. Keep up the improvements! (can't help with memory watcher since I've never TAS'd on snes)

I believe one common problem with it is having to rename the SNES9x executable. Mine is named snes9x+v9.exe and it works, so I suppose I would recommend trying that. Also, you have to find the hex values you need for yourself and configure the watcher for the game. If you run the memory watcher and hit enter, it opens up the text file you'll want to look at. It has a couple of examples in there to help get you started.

Thanks! And guess what? Out of the blue, I'd like to thank adelikat, Deign, Cardboard & JXQ for making that surprise SMB3 NES that will help me for the first few levels and last world. I'm also giving credit to JXQ (again) for his warpless run and (wonder if he's still somewhere on the internet) トクシン for HIS warpless run. All of these have given me ideas on a good TAS for SMB3. Now it's time to make the SNES (my friend calls it the Snez) shine in SMB3-y glory! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/979902269/SMB3_SMAS_100_8.0.smv Clicky the linky to watch 1-1 in glitchy glory! Version 7 Re-records (all World 1): 197 (1-1 was like.... 35) Version 8.0 Re-records (Just 1-1): 75! Trust me, getting the whole mushroom thing to work was harsh man, just, harsh. Period.

Looks much better now. About the mushroom, I made a short demo movie: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1309436950/SMB3_SMAS_100_Demo.smv You just need to find out the right timing for when to switch to one direction only. (And you obviously need to know all the tricks available in the game. It is possible to get the mushroom when it's still in the block for example) Keep at it, though.
