I know you can still get it while it's in the block, the reason I caught it mid-air was so I could pick up the shell for throwing at the Venus Fire Trap. Another slight problem is that with that, you would'nt be able to jump the blocks, again without a shell. Will do-over 1-1 to try that, though. EDIT: I just realized, 50 replies! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1873715341/SMB3_SMAS_100_8.0.1.smv That's the closest I can get :P. 23 frame difference with V8.0, probably because I don't have to use wall-jump at the pipe.
I believe one common problem with it is having to rename the SNES9x executable. Mine is named snes9x+v9.exe and it works, so I suppose I would recommend trying that. Also, you have to find the hex values you need for yourself and configure the watcher for the game. If you run the memory watcher and hit enter, it opens up the text file you'll want to look at. It has a couple of examples in there to help get you started.
It says SUPER MARIO ALL_STARS ??? but nothing else happens. I also can't seem to make snes9x smaller and run both at the same time.

You don't need the shell. You can just jump over the pipes (as I did in the demo) and slow down at the bricks to avoid collision.

Are you aware of this submission? It plays through some levels using L+R, and it might give you some ideas to further optimize things. Also, we submitted an improvement to my old warpless run (hasn't been published yet though) here, for some ideas in other levels (though it's the NES version so there was no L+R glitch to use). Good luck!

I just finished watching the 4 of you's warpless run, and I've been trying to find nitsuja's run for a long time, but I couldn't find it. Thanks! And while working on V8.0.1 I finnaly got the mushroom and did it, And I cleared the pipe, so my bad XD.

Run the memory watcher, hit enter, copy/paste this at the bottom:
;================================
; >> Super Mario All-Stars (U) [!]
;================================
[SUPER MARIO ALL_STARS]

7E008B,1s,X Velocity
7E005E,1x,X Position
7E000D,1x,Y Position
;could also be at 7E0070? this seemed more accurate
7E0413,1u,P-meter
Now save, and run the memory watcher again and you should be good to go. You may need to find some other important values (for a Mario game, probably so) but that should help you out a bit.

OK, now it works. Thanks! I just realized, the value for full P-Meter is 128. :P The game that would eventually become Mario Galaxy. Also, I have two new vids. Each one does pretty much the same thing, and I can't choose which one to use. Canidate 1: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/469440281/SMB3_SMAS_100_8.0.3.smv Canidate 2: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/142966086/SMB3_SMAS_100_8.0.4.smv I say 2, but what do you guys think?

Neither. They both use the wrong strategy (?) and are too unoptimized. Get the mushroom as in my demo, jump over the pipes and slow down (press left) as less as possible. I suspect you just slowed down without any further thoughts. Try out different ways and minimize the frames you need to press left before pressing left/right again.

I tried to use nitsuja's strategy of getting the leaf ASAP, but that didn't turn out well. Well, I'll keep on trying until I get it, even if I finish 1-1 10 years from now! OK, maybe not that long...

Ok, my biggest problem is getting the leaf. When you have a leaf, all jumps are slower so you only want the leaf if you HAVE to have it (like how you finish the castle quicker with it) (notice in the warpless movie, the leaf is gotten rid of as soon as it is no longer needed). Also, is what is left+right max x-velocity? how about P running?

66, which is reached regardless of whether you are holding Y. However, the P-meter only builds if you are holding Y.

56, if by P running you mean standard running to the side.

This is the closest I can get (which still is pretty close) to getting the mushroom as fast as you. So far, between V8.0.1 and V8.0.6 (yes, this is 8.0.6) The frames gained is only about 30 frames, but it shows 8.0.6 as being 1 second less. So.... where is 8.0.6? You've found it. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/894265749/SMB3_SMAS_100_8.0.6.smv And I thought the max P-meter value was 128....

SNES runs at 30 frames/second. So 30 frames = 1 second. And with Mario games, EVERY frame counts. Expect this run to be scrutinized down to the very last detail.

What, no, it doesn't. You're probably thinking about interlaced mode, which isn't used in many games and not in SMAS.

O.o I thought NTSC ran 60fps and PAL ran 50fps....

You are correct. 30 frames gained = 0.5 seconds

Huh. Don't know where I got the idea that SNES ran at 30 FPS.

It's time to move onto something new.... 1-2. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1011894511/SMB3_SMAS_100_8.1.2.smv This is about 15 frames FASTER than the first update, due to not having to slow down before the steep hill with the lone coin block.

You slowed down for a gumba again. Why?

In 1-3, I had to slow down 10-15 frames, otherwise I would have hit the wall no matter what. Another route avoids this, but my expirements have come out that route is 17 frames SLOWER.

Hmm. I have been corrected. OK. I'll work on one that goes through 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3.

Bump! Re-picking this up since it's been one and a half YEARS wince I've last played this, and now that I have more expirence, maybe I'll do a bit better, hmm? That and I had to drop another of my projects, and I like to keep 2 at a time so once I'm bored with one, on to the other and vise versa. EDIT: Never mind, I found something else. Will do this again when finished.

Although, this is not really relevant, I made a TAS of this up to world 5 a long time ago. It's of unacceptable quality and follows arbitrary rules, but it should be good for a few views at least. I still use basic stuff like frame advance, but it's not nearly optimised. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/93545721/smb3.smv
