About the movie

This is an improvement to my previous atempt at fastest ingame time, it is by the games clock 19.37 seconds or 1162 frames faster so the clock is finally down to 00:23 :)
Much of the improvement comes from better ammo/energy management (I think 5-6 seconds) and more Continuous wall jumps which can be implemented at many more places than I originally thought, several seconds came from that as well. The rest is just better room strategies and better general optimization.

Bisqwit: I realize this is another pandora's box, but producing entertaining movies is one of the major goals of this site, and this movie seems to have been deemed entertaining by the audience. As this category of movie has popped in from time to time, I will therefore proceed to accept this movie for publication alongside the aims-for-realtime movie.

Arguing semantics. Why bringing up physics textbook definition when we aren't even measuring distance to begin with? The concept we use instead of distance isn't uniformly defined, which is why different goals are there. Aiming for ingame clock = aiming for faster gameplay. Aiming for realtime clock = aiming for lesser overall time. It's a matter of personal taste. And I repeat, taking less time isn't always perceived as being faster, and perceiving the runs is the purpose of their creation. Not lower numbers.

I know: Let's publish both runs as one single avi. First encode one of the runs to an avi, and then append the other to the same avi. Double publication. Two runs for the price of one.

Well to some extent you would be able to get lower game times with heavy pause abusing. First of all in any room where you have to do some kind of luckmanipulation (usually for item drops) you could pause and wait until the wanted result happens at the first frame possible. (granted that it is not needed to be done right in the beginning of the room since pausing takes a second or so from pressing start to the game clock stopping) That could at best save maybe a second or so in total at the cost of some additional minutes of realtime. Then there are a lot of rooms where it is beneficial to change your equipment, mostly it is de-equipping hi-jump for some faster room strategies or de-equipping gravity suit in a couple of underwater rooms. That could save maybe another second at the cost of a minute or so. Some bosses (to my knowledge only phantoon and botwoon) only dies every 10-20 frames or so, that could also be manipulated into happening at the best possible time with pausing. There is also a possible route change that could be done by abusing pause to induce semi immortality, norfair could be done before both WS and Kraid surviving the heat without any refilling by pausing constantly. This would make WS significantly faster while still having the benefit of doing kraid after maridia. Because of additional backtracking I'm not sure this is faster in the end though but would add some minutes of realtime. Also before anyone asks, the reason I (or any sane person) choose not to do this is basically the same reason that the current realtime oriented route is not optimal for realtime. The abuses needed to do it in the fastest possible ways are ugly and boring.

nope, see: http://tasvideos.org/SuperMetroidTricks.html#MechanicsOfTheInGameTimer you can avoid death by frequent pausing though (you cannot die while entering / exiting the pause screen, even if your energy is zero). That could lower your ingame-time by delaying e-tanks or doing more damage-boosts or skipping health refills. If you can pause during MBs gay-rainbow-attack it'd allow skipping e-tanks altogether, but I doubt that's possible. edit: you can't pause during the attack, so you'll die.

I realize that was an abstract comment, and I kind of regret making it. They complete the same game. That was the point I was trying to get across. The analogy later in that post does a much better job of doing this.

SWEET :) This came out of nowhere to me. A really nice surprise. I guess the NBMB can obsolete this later as it will finish at a faster ingame time, thus we would not need yet another category.

I too am surpriesed (and happy) that both runs were published, gratz. But I don't think a NBMB should obsolete this. I'd rather keep this published and have the NBMB get not publised if catoriges are a problem. this game has too many catorgies, but one game can't have to many (think about it: in-game any%, real-time any%, low% Speed, low% Ice, Max% MBMB, Max% NBMB without OOR travel (besides the statue room), 7% NBMB, any% NBMB, 100%, and RBO).
Current TAS Project: SMR 100% TAS - 12.5% of the way done with the initial route (I'm going to then release it for further improvments)

NBMB = No Boss or MiniBoss OOR = Out Of Room travel, where you glitch through the walls/ceilings using the X-Ray climb glitch. RBO = Reverse Boss Order, where you kill the bosses in the order Ridley > Draygon > Phantoon > Kraid.

Well as much as I'd like to have this category prevail I would ultimately rather have a glitched out absolutely lowest time possible run to get that spot. It might be less entertaining but it fills a IMO better purpose. Also very much thank you bisqwit for publishing this.

Wouldnt NBMB be faster in realtime as well? Why would it obsolete this run as opposed to the other?

Because NBMB is a glitched-out run made for lulz. It has novelty value, but is nowhere near the entertainment level of full runs. In-game category is the only one now that has similar idea in mind, so it would make sense if NBMB will obsolete it, seeing as it will have pretty much the same goals, aside from skipping bosses.

How fast would it be? people describe the glitch in a way that compares it to the zelda 3 run, but would it be that severe? how fast are we talking?

I'm not really for the NBMB idea to obsolete this run, since it's likely the most entertaining form of any SM runs (max speed/pace and variety while still max legal ingame completion time), but it would probably be the only fitting obsoletion choice to avoid too many categories. Anyway, nice decision to accept both runs for now, Bisqwit. Thanks for taking the time to encode them.
