What emulator is better Famtasia or FCEU?

Define 'better'. I prefer to use FCEU if that is what you are asking.

Thats not what he's asking. He's clearly asking which of the two is a better emulator. Probably in many aspects such as emulation accuracy, stability, functions etc.

Well, Famtasia goes around .25 FPS for about 5 minutes after loading before settling down. (Not exaggerating). And again if you pause the emulator in any way except the rom's pause. (Including opening any emulator menu).

Well, you can't answer which is better, since each one is better than the other one in some things. The only questions I can think of are: "Which do you prefer?", "Which emulates an nes better?", and "Which one is the best to make time attacks with?"

If you ask for my preference... Famtasia allows anything between 1..999% speed of original, with any frame skipping I desire... It allows for reconfiguring almost all hotkeys. It has movie support, 60 fps support and 240 scanline support. All very neat. The window can be scaled, and movies can be rerecorded. It allows for 10 snapshot slots. Some people claim to have problems with Famtasia, but for some reason, neither desyncs or crashes happen at me anymore. It seems to depend on computer. Whereas the Linux version of FCEU is very underdeveloped: speed changing buttons don't work in scandinavian keyboards, frame advance button doesn't exist, file paths are handled in most ugly way and keys are not configurable (at least not without knowing how to hex-edit the binary-format configuration file). These limitations may or may not apply to the Windows version. However, for movie watching, FCEU is somewhat ahead of Famtasia, with its better sound emulation, slightly better palette and PAL support.

These limitations may or may not apply to the Windows version. They don't. Speed change and frame advance work on my scandinavian keyboard. Keys are configurable. I don't know about file paths, but I haven't had any problems. My guess would be: * For Windows, use FCEU (most people here do, largely because of the frame advance feature) * For Linux, use Famtasia (according to Bisqwit)

File paths are fully configurable. Movie files are stored in the same dir as savestates dir.

i got a pentium III 1000 Mhz with a Ge-force fx5200 256 mb, and famtasia still gives me "very heavy!" messages and takes a long time to adjust speed, that's the only bad thing i have to say about famtasia, i like it very much, one of the most confortable rerecording emus i have used. but i got to admit, changing speed in fceu is MUCH better, at least for me, i just have to press - or = and the speed will go up or down in set amounts instead of opening the menu, typing a new number, hitting OK and waiting for the sync...

FCEU has a fast-forward key (like all good emulators), I couldn't find one in Famtasia ... and I need it often, especially when I need to rewind past my last save (or to a precise point) and have to replay the whole movie. I haven't tried re-recording in Famtasia, but it works great in FCEU ... although a "play from savestate" feature (instead of only record) would be really useful with backup saves. Being limited to powers of 2 for speed in FCEU doesn't bother me too much, since I usually stay at 25% speed and use frame advance when needed (again, I switch a lot) ... FCEU also runs smoother and got the best accuracy I've seen of all NES emulators (it's the only one that runs Klax perfectly, for example), so that's another pretty good reason for me to go with FCEU.

No, I know that, and FCEU can too ... what I meant is that a way to just replay the movie from a savestate instead (so I can re-record at any point from it instead of redoing everything) would really help, as I'd keep a backup save and only need to replay from it instead of the start ... it'd save a lot of time when working on longer movies.

The only real annoyance I'm having with FCEU is that after loading while paused, the image doesn't update until you advance a frame again. Otherwise, FCEU is just perfect. Well, there's no rewind feature but that's impossible to implement anyway. Would be neat to have though. (well, I guess it would be theoretically possible to make a savestate every single frame...) Famtasia, on the other hand, is full of problems. I can't really run it in a large window, it just craps itself if I do that. Also, there's no frame advance. It isn't as good as FCEU as an emulator either. So FCEU has suprerior emulation and suprerior movie-making features. It's a bit ironic that the Linux version isn't so good. (or so I've heard) After all, it's open source and there's a native Linux port... It isn't possible to run the Win32 version in Wine, is it? (or Cedega, or whatever it is called this week) :)

Even that i use Windows i like famtasia a bit more. I kinda like the inaccurate sound emulation (makes funny noises) And FCEU is good too but cant get used to it and it starts to get veeeeery choppy at speed over 200% (sound goes faster than the game)

nah. its a good emulator but im used to famtasia a lot more in recording business :) No the speed is a minor thing that i just happened to mention. I might move to FCEU later, but now its famtasia for me atleast for a while

i am recording on FCEU and i realized i had to go back to the start of the level, so i stopped the movie, loaded themovie again marked the "read only" option, and loaded the state i saved at the start of the level so i could watch only that level instead of watching the whole game from the start, but to my surprise it stopped the movie, and when i played the whole thing back, it erased everything i had done from that point!!! so i guess "read only" doesn't work???? it made me lose 70% of a level work.... will i have to watch my movie from the start every level i finish? i dont like recording madly without watching everything on every level to make sure it have been recorded correctly or if i did any mistakes....

Hmm. When I have tested FCEU for blip, I didn't tested that feature, it may be unstable, I don't know. I'm gonna test that feature later and see if it's ok or not.

So they have decided to change the name of WineX to Cedega. I didn't know that.
