I've been waiting for someone else do do this, but since no one seems to be interested I decided to go ahead and give it a try. It's in the same style as the Gradius movie we've all seen and enjoyed. Current progress: just finished level 3 http://www.mmedia.is/shodan/files/SuperRType(J).smv Edit: I did it again on "pro" difficulty (by using a cheat code). The download link is the same but the file is now different. Edit: Okay, I've now finished level 3 but I found out you can skip the short score sequence at the end of each level. Should I start over, keep going and skip it from this point on or keep going and not skip (for consistency's sake)?

Me to actually. Mostly because I own the original R-type to SEGA 8-bit. In 1987, THAT was graphics, not to mention the music. :). I would like to see one to this game. I dont know about this game, but in the first R-type there was speedup in capsules. If so it could be pretty booring in the beginning and more exciting in the end. :)

well i just looked at this very first movie. All i can tell is that the game is slowing down so much cuz of all those sprites on screen. I think you can shot some. Btw thats a shot'em up :)

Thing is, you're not allowed to start the game on the hardest possible level. o_O To get to Pro, you either have to: A) play all the way through and beat Hard, or B) start the game on Hard, enter the level select code, and pick level 11 (same as level 1, but one difficulty higher).

Oh. I didn't even know about another difficulty level. I guess I'll use method B and start again (when I'm bored enough).

Okay, I did it again on PRO difficulty (same download link). Same style, no enemies killed except the speed-powerup-giving one. First level only. I'll do more levels later but I really would like to know if this first level is any good. Should I kill some enemies to prevent slowness? Should I even kill all enemies?

I don't know... is there anything interesting to do with the force pod? Im on the border on whether the force pod makes things more interesting or too easy. Nice stuff so far.

There are two Gradius 3 runs, one that kills all enemies and one that only kills bosses. (At least I think so, I haven't watched either of them.) Which one are you talking about? In my run, I only take speed upgrades because the only things I ever kill are the bosses anyway, and those can be easily killed with one or two mega-charged shots. Someone else can do a 100%kills run, which would also be faster since there wouldn't be any slowdown. By the way, I have decided to start again because of the mistake I made. I also kill the first boss way faster now.

I meant todays release of Gradius 3. To bad you only are getting speed-upgrades lets hope someone will do a 100%run

Im surprised that nobody seem to have interest in this lovely game. I strongly feel that R-Type is much better than Gradius. Someone up to this? And please, as I said earlier in this thread, plzzzz DO NOT only take speed ups... Go for the best weapons and perhaps 100% kill.

Oh, I totally forgot about this game. I haven't worked on this run at all, and probably never will. At least not in the forseeable future. Anyone else up to it? (Both 100% kills and 0% kills.)

Well, I have a ROM of it on my other computer (and I have the game too so I don't consider it piracy :) ) so I may consider it, although your reminding me of it is another reason I want to get back to the Shooting Macross run I started a while back. I like auto-scrolling shooter runs...simple, don't require much planning, but require some good boss strategy. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree on the Gradius 3 vs. Super R-Type comparison...Gradius 3 was so far ahead of its time as a '90 release and a little 4-mega cart...although my favorite overall SNES shooters are R-Type 3 and Shooting Macross. And yes, the old Sega Master System R-type was pretty darn impressive for its time.

Duke you certainly got my vote if you decide to do it, like I said, it cannot be that hard, due to the great weapons R-Type can receive.

Yeah, R-type III run would be better. Or Super R-Type run with only the starting weapon (because the bosses die fastest with the charged up beam).

I didn't see a thread for this game, so I figured I'd start one. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/65065779/%21%21R-Type-Dave.smv This is a WIP through the first two stages, if you're interested. R-type can be very laggy at times, so there isn't as much crazy screen-full-of-enemies dodging as in Gradius III. I play on hard mode. There is a "pro" mode, but I'm 99.9% sure you can't access it without winning the game on hard first. If this is wrong, someone please let me know!! If it's possible to access pro mode at the title screen, I will of course play on pro mode instead of hard. Unlike Gradius, your power-ups are more limited in R-Type. Speed upgrades come rarely (about once per level). I figure the constrained optimization problem in TASing this game would be to maximize entertainment and points while minimizing lag. Of course, there should also be a 100% kill rate (or as close as possible). The only level where I would sacrifice time is probably level 4. This is the level where you can destroy the big red floating ship. I think a little lag would be OK for the entertainment of the whole ship getting destroyed. Please watch this WIP, and provide feedback if you're interested. Thanks. Dave

There is a way to get into pro difficulty without beating hard, but it requires the level select cheat: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/code/588750.html Said cheat allows you to pick from levels 01 to 07, and 11 to 17. The higher set is one difficulty ahead of what you picked on the options screen, so if you pick hard and then select level 11, you'll start level 1 at pro difficulty. I'm not sure if using the cheat affects the ending at all, though...<_<'

Here's the old thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=888 I think it's amusing that the thread ends with someone saying R-Type 3 would be a better choice, but the thread for R-Type 3 says Super R-Type is better :P
