Turns out that due to unforeseen circumstances, I will be visiting NY for a week or two a month from now.* And I'm happy to oblige. I've never been to the States before. If someone wants to recommend me things to do and places to visit (and possibly people to meet) while there, I'm open for suggestions :) *) I'll be visiting ICWE 2008, flight & accommodation expenses paid by the company I work for. (For the conference time.)

Wouldn't the most mad events take place when arriving, not when leaving? One wouldn't think that they'd be more concerned about terrorists coming to the country than of terrorists leaving the country :) Not to imply that I were one. Which I'm not. There's a restaurant I ate at in NYC called "Cafe de Leon" in Brooklyn. 142 W 49th Street, just about a block off of Broadway. It's great if you like a small shop. Good pizza and pasta. I'd recommend musicals to watch, but every single one is gone off of Broadway (all 7 of them!). Go to the Statue of Liberty at least anyways. You'll have a much better view then when I went (which was in January - and very snowy). Don't melt in the heat wave too, BTW. Make sure you're well hydrated. They've been running in the triple digits lately.

if you have a day off, you can take the ferry on early morning at Battery Park (or next to) to Ellis Island, then jump to Liberty Island on the afternoon. the Empire State building seems a good idea too, if you like museums there's the Metropolitan which is next to Central Park, the MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Brooklyn Museum, etc.

Unless you're on a strict schedule you might want to consider taking a $50 New York-Toronto flight and coming to Canada for a day or two.

I'm due to visit the Big Apple in July sometime as well. (We have a free place to stay and found $1 bus tickets; we'd be crazy not to go). The friend I'm going with grew up there, so he knows the ins and outs of the city. If I visit on a weekend that you're in NY, I'll try to get in touch with you if you'd like.

*sigh* Figures you'd come to New York while I'm not there! I notice this conference is being held outside the city. Are you staying in Manhattan and commuting to the conference? Or are you staying in Westchester while planning to visit New York City on your own time?

I haven't locked any schedule/location yet, but I think I'll stay in Manhattan (or somewhere around) and commute to the conference.

Not regularly, anyway, and I don't like beer in general. Though I liked a certain lemon flavored beer I had in Austria. I have forgot its brand though. EDIT: It was Radler. Thanks mr_roberts_z. Apologies for deleting your posts, but I cleaned up the thread a bit.

NYC. Lots of shopping, tourist attractions, kinda like a mini-Tokyo, except without 8 thousand different wards and disricts. Many restaurants, and other things. Anything you see that you want to do, do it. It dosen't get much better than this. Except for Tokyo. Heads up on security though, I heard from Yahoo! that airports like Chicago-O'Hare, NYC-LaGaurdia and Los Angeles are getting airport security that can see through clothes this month. EDIT: Also, I heard Nintendo World just got a huge add-on or something, if you wanted to check that out or something like that. (Not saying you absolutely have to)

Avoid the tourist traps. A nice stroll through central park is usually more rewarding than most other attractions. Sit in on an airing of TRL if you want to hate your life.

A pity your visit (probably?) doesn't include July 4th. People do some crazy things on America's birthday... or maybe that's just where I live, we have a reputation for our July 4th celebration. But I don't live anywhere near NYC so it's a moot point anyway.

Just a heads up for everyone, don't meet Bisqwit, he's a serial killer, and if you want to live, you're better off not meeting him. Didn't your parents ever tell you to not meet up with strangers you meet on the internet? Bisqwit: I recommend the Statue of Liberty, although be prepared to have a huge line and waiting for at least an hour to get in. Also make sure to bring a large amount of water with you. I'd also recommend vising the technology places if you like technology. Normally, I'm all for boycotting everything Sony, but going to Sony Wonder (formerly AT&T Infoquest) is a great place to see crazy futuristic technology.

Ah, man, I'll be in Palmyra on the opposite side of the state a month from today. :( Oh well. Sad to say, all my trips to New York City leave me rather unimpressed. Living in Suburbia, I don't mind living in the shadow of a big city, but being inside is just depressing for me. New York is especially bad. At least everything you need to survive is within walking distance. At least be sure to visit Times Square, especially at night, for some crazy advertising. Highest billboard-to-real-estate density I've ever seen (although pictures I've seen of Chinese cities look to put it to shame).
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.
