Sometimes, my Windows XP refuses to terminate processes (tasks). When I think that the fan noise is way to loud, I Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and check that some tasks, such as "gens_9.5b.exe", "firefox.exe", "paint.exe", for instance are still there, even though I already quited those programs hours ago. The worst thing is that when it's time to shut down, WXP shows several error messages about terminating processes. "This could take a while..." *a few, plenty, tons of hours later...* "The process failed to shutdown" *Clicks Shut Down manually.* For each and every freaking task! As anyone else had this problem? Either way, can someone help me? Another question: I only have one user account with no password. Yet, the welcome screen gives me the option to choose which user account I want to login (even tough I only have one) instead of the "Welcome" screen.

One thing you can try to do for the login issue is to download TweakUI from Microsoft's site -> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Click the plus by Logon, then click on Autologon. Check the box, make sure your user name is correct, and press apply. That should solve your problem. As for the tasks issue, I don't know why it's not killing them, but you can always kill them manually via Task Manager. That should at least help XP shutdown when you want to.

Try running a defragment as well, it will help clear some space to make things faster... but it sounds almost as if windows has become corrupted somehow, and continues to error out for no reason. Usually when that happens I reinstall the OS... >_>

I dont think this would help the processes problem, but try downloading ccleaner and run their registry fixer. Sometimes invalid registry entries can be a real pain during startupp and shutdown

Defragmentation doesn't actually change the amount of free space, it only optimizes the occupied space. Espyo, do you kill processes via the "processes" tab of the task manager?

If you type tskill process_name then it will close it instantly.

Normally, WXP shuts down the tasks by itself, without my intervention. I just don't know why it refuses to do that sometimes. I'll try installing ccleaner; I was planning to install it, several times, but never actually did it. About the defragment, I do it sometimes, and it doesn't seem to help. If everything else fails, I really need to re-install the OS. Thanks guys! @Sir VG: Thanks, I'll try that for the account issue.

I use ccleaner often, it works great ^_^ I also use Regscrub XP, but before downloading and using, see what others in the forum think... I am not as 1337 as other computer guys.

taskkill has flags for force process closed, rather than gracefully force closed (SIGKILL vs SIGTERM) it's /f Just taskkill /f ProcessID
