For the Megaman series, 3 has the best music, no question.
Naaaah. 2-4 all have a lot of great tunes. (2 exceptionally with the first stage of Dr. Wily, 4 with Skull and Pharaoh stages, Cossack 3/4)
I'm not saying that 2 and 4 were bad. Just that 3 was best. 3's music quality was consistently high, not having a few bum tunes like 2 did (or a lot of bum tunes like 4 did). Probably the only tunes I'm not really fond of in 3 are Gemini Man's stage and Shadow Man's stage. All 19 other tracks are good. 3 also has the best Robot Master boss theme, which never hurts.

Bum tunes in 2? Which would you be thinking of? (Wily 3/4?)

I'm not a huge fan of Crash Man, Quick Man, Wood Man, the boss theme, heck, even the item-get theme. There's probably a few more but I can't bring up all the MM2 themes on-demand. Even the songs that I like reasonably well don't feel as epic as the themes in MM3.

NES Test's quality soundtrack far surpasses any of the games mentioned so far. Ok, seriously: The C&C games with Frank Klepacki as the composer Castlevania: SotN SD3 Pretty much any LoZ game Star Wars: KotOR 2 (Kreia's Dark Theme, specifically)

The second most beautiful piece of music was from an anime, but it was the Kirby anime, (Hoshi no Kaabii) so it sort of counts as video game related. (but not really)
Was it from early on in the show or later? Because a lot of the later music is originally from Kirby Air Ride or other games.
It was actually in the very first scene in the first episode. XD The song title on the OST is "Popstar" It's a beautiful song. Some great music from Smash Bros Brawl. (I may have forgotten some) Battle with Marx (Kirby) Battle with the Squeaks (Kirby) Legendary Air Ride Machine (Kirby) Butter Buildings (Kirby) Mt. Dedede (Kirby) Revenge of MetaKnight (Kirby) Dr. Mario Chill Balloon Fight Tetris A (Best friggin remix of it ever) Tetris B Luigi's Mansion The main Theme. (With lyrics) King K. Rool Mario Bros Overworld remix Ashley's Theme English (Yeah, Yeah. Make fun of me if you must) Mike's Theme English (Again, make fun of me if you can't hold it in) I'm sure I've forgotten some. And I've recently found out that the Earthbound Soundtrack is really good.

Thanks for confirming that you have no soul. Also, MM5 has an excellent soundtrack, but I rarely hear it get mentioned compared to 2-4. I'd definitely place it above both 4 and 6. My favorite tunes are Charge Man, Stone Man, Gravity Man, and Gyro Man.

Particular songs I feel worth mentioning "Metal Harbor" and "Live and Learn" from Sonic Adventure 2, "E.G.G.M.A.N." a bit less "Open your Heart"and "Theme of E-102γ" from Sonic Adventure 1 *waits out the boos garnered from mentioning either of above games in music context* LttP Darkworld has already been mentioned but is always worth mentioning. And its Christmas Remix I found in midi form over on vgmusic.com. "TalTal Heights" from Link's Awakening [Particularly an amazing banjo-using remix] "Flying Battery Zone" and "Sky Sanctuary" from Sonic 3&KNuckles "Eternal Star" from Mario Party 1 "Mission Final" (I think that's the name of the score screen) from Metroid Prime 1 "A Hero's Final Day" "Overworld" "Opening" "Underworld" "Magic Rocks" and "Ending Theme" from Terranigma "Level 1-1" from Super Turrican(SNES) "Level 7" from Sparkster(SNES) "Cast" from Demon's Crest "Hyperspace" from Star Control 2 "Fight against Koopa" "Let's Play Geno" "Beware the Forest's Mushrooms" from Super Mario RPG "Gangplank Galleon" from Donkey Kong Country "End Credits" from Donkey Kong Country 2 "Zeromus" from Final Fantasy IVj "Battle Theme #3" from Lufia 2 "Night of Big Blue(story 4)" from F-Zero GX "Time's Scar" from Chrono Cross "Dungeon Theme" from Startropics "File Select" and whatever plays when the Crystal Stars let you fight the REAL final boss from PAper Mario 2: The Thousand Year Door "Intro" "Ode to Lisa" "Ending" from Soul Blazer "Ayla's Theme" "Chrono Trigger" "Fanfare 1" "Schala's Theme" "Black Dream" "Battle with Magus" "Singing Mountain" and "To Far Away Times"

Oh fuck yes. Adding to that, Black Heart is one of the best shmup boss battles ever, seriously.

I like a lot of Link's Awakening's music. The Face Shrine (not the dungeon version) is particularly good, as is a lot of others I can't be arsed to name. There are a few other songs I like, but most of them come up by pure random. Lufia 2's battle theme and Iris's theme (RSN set tagged "The Prophet") is good also. Mm. Super Metroid's "Arrival on Crateria" music, complete with rain and thunderstrikes, is excellent ambient music for me. <3 <3 <3.

Oh, I also forgot to mention the Space Race music for Pac-Man World. It's definitely one of my favorite space-themed tracks. Adding to that, Black Heart is one of the best shmup boss battles ever, seriously. Amen to that. It took me so long to get used to his infamous bullet cage pattern, but once I did, it made me feel like a champ. To me, Black Heart represents the equally-determined, equally-skilled rival that we always love to face in games. The "good" bad guy whom you can't help but have a lot of respect and admiration for. I'm a big fan of that because I tend to like the whole idea of duels in general. And of course, it helps to be a badass stealth bomber too (or would it be a stealth fighter?).

I'll take this time to nominate both Rocket Knight Adventures and the SNES sequel Sparkster, plus the indie game Eternal Daughter. Also, Jet Force Gemini has one of my favorite boss tunes.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Oh man, I can't believe I neglected to mention this. NiGHTS: into dreams Let alone the songs being good in their own right, this probably has some of the most technically impressive music, since it would actually change as you did levels repeatedly. There was a system in place called A-Life where there would be little AI denizens in the levels that persisted between playthroughs, and you would affect their "mood" based on different actions done around them. This mood in turn affected the music to be any of 4 variations. So while everyone might hear the original base theme as they first play the game, as you progress it could switch to any of three other variations, differing at different points in the level. You can check out the soundtrack including its major variations here.
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

Battle With Gilgamesh - Final Fantasy V Great Remix of it: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01515/ FYI: The remix has a bunch of different Final Fantasy remixes all in one song. The first couple riffs are part of "Battle With Gilgamesh" Most of what I like has already been said, so i'll only say this one...
