(With the Nes controler displayed on the screen). A new type of competition: make a video with the less number of pressed fire button times as possible. Exemple of result: in Contra: the player will attempt to avoid the most of ennemies as possible without firing. Or just count the number of all pressed buttons times. Overall: that's will result of accurate videos. Notation: If people doesn't like viewing that display, just display the current number of pressed times.

Just think, when playing a Megaman game, you'll have to go out of your way to get the weapon to beat the boss in one shot :) Or in Castlevania, you'll have to aim your Holy Water to take out 5 guys at once :)

But I have to agree that it would be a good motivator to create even more impressive movies. More effect with less actions is always better.

I got one word for ye: Autofire.

will only work for a few games though, because in many games each button press doesn't necessarily equal an action on the screen. For example, you can press B a hundred times in a row but your character may only jump once. Less isn't always better, more actions in the game may make it more entertaining. Only sure way to tell good from bad is to compare movies by watching them; any redundant actions are obvious to the viewer anyway.

Bisqwit: can you display a press button counter on the screen?

Yeah but technically, you would be only pressing the button once lol ^-^

Here are 2 exemples of what we can do: - - - - - - - - - - This is an exemple with all pressed buttons times: http://genisto.servehttp.com/exemple_in_castlevania_3(j).fmv Total pressed buttons times after stage 1: 78 - - - - - - - - - - And this, is an exemple with the fire pressed button times: http://genisto.servehttp.com/exemple_in_megaman4.fmv I have pressed 7 times on it in one stage (Boss included without any secondary weapons) - - - - - - - - - - Suggestion: (Things that are not permitted) - HP lost - Death - Autofired weapons (like Machinegun) These videos must be like a speedrun. Bisqwit: plz complete my exemples by including that display and continue leading with my idea. -- Sorry if there are somes errors in the text --

Pacifist run? This already exist in doom speedrun comunity. But there they can shoot as long they dont hit someone (or hit something that will explode and hit someone). I would love to see some ultra pacifist ultimate doom tas (or normal speedrun) were the guy: 1-Change to fist as fast as possible when the game start. 2-Don't shoot 3-No monster infrigment (including stuff not made by him) 4-He doenst get bullets, weapons... 5-He doenst get hit. 6-Nightmare Skill. 7-All stages of the episode. I mean he would only break those rules if he discover that there is no way to win without that.

Holy Necropost Batman! This has to be the largest gap between posts on this site. Is there even another post on these forums that has the most recent reply older than this? The site was only like 1 month old at the time of the last posting. By the way, as this is 8 years old, everything in this page exists already. Though I am impressed that the lowest number of button pressed idea existed that far back and is still being discussed and submitted.

Sorry, someone referenced this post in a recent thread and I forgot to see the date. If there is some problem I delete my post from this thread.

No, it's not a problem. (You can't delete that post anymore, anyway. Only moderators can.) This did probably set a new record for longest necropost on this site, though.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. There are no necroposting timelimits on this site. (of course, that doesn't prevent from getting comments about necroposting if one bumps thread old enough.) And as to if there is a thread with newest post older than that, yes, there is. Quite a few actually. Official time between posts: 265011663 seconds, which is a new record.

Very interesting thread. I figured this idea would have started with a submission, maybe a few years later, but they were considering this during the Famtasia days, with no DDR display for lowest button presses or possibly even on-screen button display!

This is somewhere between the "minimum presses" and "without using a particular button" goals. And necroposting is fine here if you have something to add; it's better than creating a new thread.

I would love to see a Doom TAS (any kind) in the first place...

My point is that I was astonished that there could be that huge of a time gap between posts on this forum. 8 years is a pretty long time. If you would have read the rest of my comment I also commented about the content of the thread.

There exists a vast amount of doom TASes of very high quality, most recent wip for doom2.wad can be found here, 20 maps out of 30. Or does your definiton of TAS exclude such movies? The only controversial technique used in modern demos is a so called "strafe50 on turns" (which was coded by a mistake by the developers of the most used tool, and now became a standard, sadly), but otherwise all these TASed doom movies/demos can be reproduced in an actual engine. And demos in Doom's case contain only header and info about what speed/turning angle was inputted in each frame, and whether player used fire button, use button or weapon switching or did nothing. Emulating the whole environment could theoretically allow some memory hacking & game breaking techniques to be done, but none of that was found so far.
