12/11/2009 http://jovem.uol.com.br/ultnot/ult530u6448.jhtm (it's in portuguese but there's a video) Brazilian company Tectoy, the same company that is officialy licensed by SEGA for production and comercialization of sega master system and mega drive (genesis) to this day, has accounced today at a press conference in São Paulo the new console it has been developing along with Qualcomm. The console's name is Zeebo. First of all so you get an idea, they said at the conference that it is capable of displaying games with quality very close to that of Resident Evil 4 on the playstation 2. With that being said, comes the especifications: - It has a built in HD. Games will be sold exclusively on a download system connected by 3G (cell phone technology), and the user won't be charged to use this system. - The controller is connected to the console using a regular USB port. It is similar to the classic controller and has an accelerometer for movement sensitive games. - It will be launched in 2009 in Brazil for market testing, and possibly worldwide afterwards. - It'll start costing R$ 599,00 (Brazilan Reais, not USD). The Wii and ps3 are sold here at about R$ 1.800,00 - It will feature games like "Quake", "FIFA", "Crash Bandicoot racing", "Resident Evil", "Street Fighter", "Ridge Racer", "Tekken", "Virtua Tennis", "Double Dragon" and "Sonic". - The games should cost R$ 20,00 at an average. It sounds good for the brazilian market and other markets where the gamers go side-by-side with piracy, because of the low cost of its games. But I think it has no chance on places like the U.S or Japan. I may buy it anyway if it features some good old and new games. I'm intrigued by this "Double dragon" though, does that means NES, SNES, arcade, master system, neo geo, mega drive or GBA?

Interesting range of games though. But we all welcome a new player to the market. And Nintendo showed you don't have to sell big power machines to win in this business ;) But looking at those titles it's more of a recycle machine than innovation. PS. 600 R$ = 210 euro or 270 dollar.

Did you just say the games are 9 USD?

Right, and at that price for those games they can actually be quite the competitor. Especially since everything is downloaded so you don't even have to go out of your way to go to a store and everything. Lower threshhold (STEAM and the PS3 proved this imo).

R$ 599,00 is the price in Brazil. It's hard to imagine a price for say, the U.S or Europe. The PS3 and Wii are sold here at such an expensive price due to import taxes, so maybe the components in the Zeebo are imported as well, making it's price be 599,00 (or 270 USD). So on another countries it should be cheaper. Funny that.

I thought it was more strange that the Wii and PS3 share the same price point. Most other markets, PS3 is twice as expensive...
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

After seeing screenshots of it in action, I call shenanigans.

Well, they're technical demos. The final console is not yet complete, so most likely those are just intended to show off the features they've implemented so far. That first screenshot intrigues me.

The goalkeeper is carrying a shield! And hmm... Qualcomm... Do you know why they'll sell the games online? To try to reduce piracy... this may work with their crappy BREW cell phones, but in a console it's just a matter of time until someone hacks the firmware/mod chip it to run unsigned games. It will most likely be teh major fail.

Something tells me that this will be nothing more than a repackaged Dreamcast.

I don't see any correlation between this and Dreamcast.

Also, did you got it why the games can be that cheap? They'll probably do like their crap BREW system and make trial versions that run a number of times or only work for a certain numbers of days...

TecToy has been distributing Sega products in Brazil since the stone age.
