For some of you that didn't know, Microsoft has been thumping their tables just to push Windows 7 into development - at least trying to get out of beta stage by Summer 2009. Some believe that Windows 7 will be a more lightweight version of Vista. But the reason I bring this up is because certain versions of Windows will have some kind of impact on FCEUX - and of course the other emulators as well. Already, I have a stable copy of Windows 7, but it is Beta. And I can look to dish out a little extra money for a product key if I have to. My concern here is that even though FCEUX works fine on Vista, maybe it could work on Windows 7? However - if it somehow didn't, how long would it take (start to finish) to release FCEUX for Windows 7? [ Wikipedia ]

And what would that impact be exactly? It's gonna need less RAM so that emulator run better/more smoothly? I wouldn't be surprised if it just broke everything in sight. But that's just me.

No. You have an alpha, or even a pre-alpha. The fact that anything works this early in development is impressive as it is.

So what are you asking? Are you asking that if Windows 7 does not support FCEUX how long will it take to release a version to support it? If so, what makes you think there will be a problem? What makes you think any changes will need to be made whatsoever?

This is a baseless assumption. I personally have never known a program that's well coded to break completely between operating system versions.

If you've already got an alpha build installed, couldn't you just try loading the current FCEUX to see if it'll work? .... or was your statement that you have Windows 7 and the current FCEUX doesn't work?

Some of the questions I ask are more "what-if" based and out of curiosity, so I apologize if there was anything offbeat. And I thought W7 was Beta, but if not, it could be getting close soon. I hear they already been releasing builds after 6801, and according to a Wikipedia image they're past 7000. Just for shits-and-giggles (excuse the language :P), I'll give FCEUX on Windows 7 a try as I am actually installing the OS. I am aware of any dangers W7 might throw at me and that this OS is not stable until Microsoft's low-IQ genius himself (Bill Gates) is satisfied. I still can't always trust Vista. [ Update ] What a bummer. Windows 7 did not provide enough to support my laptop's hardware, resulting in an upgrade failure. Luckily, a roll-back was able to put me back in Vista. My next move now is the following emulation method: VMWare program > Windows 7 guest OS > FCEUX emulator

I hope you're aware that basically anything that runs on vista is going to run on the new one.

Okay. Now I read a webpage saying that it is possible to do a clean install of W7 while upgrading will be a pain in the rear - so I will give that a try. I will have to back up all my stuff first. [ Update ] After a clean install and a temporary product key that buyed me 30 days of evaluation, I been playing with Windows 7 almost all morning. It later recognized and installed drivers for my notebook's on-board ATi Radeon Xpress 200M. I even had to run BlueBadge to turn the Windows Taskbar inside-out! A couple more programs I need to install, and then I'll try to screenshot a few NES games emulated on Windows 7. Of course, a clean install did not install any drivers for my sound card, but it has found and took care of my video. Speaking of, I want you guys to give me a list of NES games you want me to take screenshots of (like Mario, Zelda, and what-not), and I'll try to get to that when I can.

Nice to see you got the alpha via legitimate means...

And it did activate perfectly. But I still await some more drivers, at least for sound.

Okay, for FCEUX, saving a state is usually triggered by holding down Shift+F1 for state # 0. But when you do that in Windows 7, it gives a strange error then pops up a lot of other dialogs that you didn't approve. It pops up "load from state", "memory watch", "replay movie", "save AVI", the whole nine yards! I couldn't generate any dumps or reports because it was running stable at the time. Normally, reports would be created if FCEUX crashed, but in this case, ehh, nah. First it kept crashing, then after a few more times it behaved but worked totally different. Whoever gets into Windows 7, watch your back. I know build 7000 is already leaked on BitTorrent, but I'm afraid I cannot point you all in that direction - to stay legal.

Someone's mentioned this bug before, so I don't think it's limited to Windows 7.

Well, I'm running Windows 7 build 7000, and loading and saving is fine for me, not running in any compatibility modes or anything. I was also surprised that Mupen works 100% fine (apart from having to disable aero, like in vista)

I guess I am running the wrong version of FCEUX or something... I'll try the latest version soon.

I'm using Windows 7 build 7000 (Just installed it, practically), and it seems that FCEUX doesn't work at ALL for me. It crashes instantly. I tried various compatibility settings, but it seems the only thing that works is plain old FCEU...
