With so many RPG topics over in the SNES forum, I'm surprised more of them haven't popped up over here. Since the first FF has been run already, I don't see why the other two couldn't be. 3's the best one for the NES, in my eyes. I tried working on a run of this awhile back. After getting thoroughly whomped in the first cave about a dozen times, I decided to move on to less-frustrating things.
The way I see it, having a team comprised mostly (or completely) of White Mages would make the first cave a lot easier, since pretty much everything there is undead. Perhaps a Monk for the fourth character, since he wouldn't require weapon upgrading?
I'm pretty sure getting under a 5-minute time before the boulder is destroyed would be plausible...
But how about the fight with Bahamut that happens later on? I mean, he's pretty much invincible, but what if you manipulated luck so that you beat the thing? It would take about a year, but... >>;
What's the lowest level you can beat the game at, anyway? I've read a couple of single-character FAQs, but none on low-level runs...
Killing Bahamut is possible but all it gives you is a shit-ton of Gil, which is mostly worthless in this game. It's better to just run from the fight like you're supposed to.
I don't think this game can be completed quickly, or 2 either. But 1 can definitely be completed quickly..

Why couldn't 2 be completed quickly, with the leveling system being as broken as it is?

but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice
Is there an emulator where it's safe to fast-forward movies without risking a desync? Because then the leveling in FF2 could be done in the very beginning and be done with it, and that part could be sped through by the watcher. The downside is that it would probably not be put into avi.
You would also need to stop to level every time you got a spell you were going to use later. And levelling HP/MP and other stats is a very, VERY slow process.. you have to end a battle for every levelup there.

In FF3. Aren´t there summoners like in FF4? And that´s why you kill Bahamuth? Atleast I remember it like that. And FF3j's last boss is teh_hardest ever imo. I don't know how long it took me to kill it.
Yes, but you get the summon the second time you kill him. The first time you only get gil (so the storyline says you're supposed to run away, which takes much much less time to do).

what about doing the FEOK (fully equipped onion knight) thing? granted, the beginning would be horribly slow and tedious, but once you got those, the game would go by in a breeze.
or is this against the rules? sorry, im still really unsure as to what we can and cant do in these.
and as far as FF2, that'd be fun. its my ABSOLUTE favorite Final Fantasy as im still hoping to one day run into an Iron Giant in the Pandemonium ;P
I've played through the game twice, once normally and once using only one character in every battle.
I would say focus on using the Dragoon class. Its only weakness is HP progression, and you can make up for the lack of HP building by dodging almost every attack, and getting superb attack power, by jumping.

-turn 3>fighter>attack>326 hp
-turn 4>black wiz>ice 2>326 hp
-turn 5>SALAMANDR>flame>253 hp to everybody
GAME OVER
Actually, as long as you're breaking the game, you should do that as soon as possible.
Use the duplication glitch to get a full set of Onion equips shortly after (or during if you can) the first dungeon, then just piledrive through everything.

Well, that's not quite going to solve everything, as there are a few times where you'll have to cast Size or Toad on yourself (and be unable to use Onion or any other equipment during that time), as well as the occasional instance where a boss is only going to be weak vs. a certain class's weapon/skill/magic and is resistant to pretty much everything else.
Besides that, though, it sounds like a pretty good strategy through getting through the meat of the game.
..the problem being you need 99 of one item in order to change item types.
Fortunately if you have the Sight spell you can dupe magic and sell it to buy the 99 Potions or whatever you need.
EDIT: and it would take quite a long time to get Onion Sword. Something like 30 battles.

i have a problem:
after getting the jobs from the water crystal i try to do a class change, but the game says:
''you don't have enough experience for that''.
what i must to do?.

julianch, a word of advice: Bisqwit does not accept runs made with fan translations of games. So your run, even if it were completed and perfect, would never appear on the site unless you do the run with the Japanese FF3.
You need Capacity to change jobs, there's no level restrictions (that I'm aware of).
Capacity is awarded on a per-battle basis, like ABP in 5 or similar.

actually, as far as the toad and size thing, from what i can recall, i could still kill enemies in one shot with onion equipment. i know theres something about not being able to USE those items, but i could. this would apply to the SIZE issue. toad is different. maybe leave one character as a variable then? like a red mage or a thief when the time calle for it (no one wants to see too many battles).
also, while we're at it with the item duping thing, i think theres a way to reset the encounter rate. its randomly determined by the number of steps taken or spaces moved. however, it will be reset if the character/party is healed. you could use this along with a lot of potions or any other healing items to reduce encounters. the only problem is i think the character actually has to be damaged for it to count. but i never really used it, just heard about it in various FAQs.
the only boss i could think of that would be tough is Geruda (Dragoon would be a BIG must here in almost any case... that and a load of luck). however, with enough time and save states (perhaps a bit of dumb luck manipulation as well), i killed him with 4 Onion Knights.
the equipment will make your characters gods, no doubt about that.
this might not be a problem actually. if one knows the game well enough, then the text shouldnt matter. aside from that, you could always play through the game once in the translation, remember what is important where and then go and play through on the japanese version.
id like to see this as i think it has easy potential of being done (especially because of the FEOK... funny how that almost feels like a curse word... hahaha).
best of luck to anyone attempting it. id LOVE to see that rerecord count.
Well, if you don't have the required CP, you can't change jobs.. which is probably one of the biggest drawbacks to a quick FF3j speedrun. You get a small amount of CP after every battle you fight, and you spend it every time you change jobs.
1) when you cast Size/Toad on yourself, your attack and defense drop down to 1 regardless of your equipment/level/stats, and 2) if I remember correctly, if you try to un-Size or un-Toad even one of the four in a passageway where you can only pass through with the spell active, it either won't work or you'll get an instant game over. (Besides, I don't think you have to stay Toad-ed through any of the dungeons where you must use the spell - you can change back to normal form without any negative consequences.)
