I am interested in this game. I will update this topic with videos of my attempts. Maybe the person who is doing the MGS run can learn something. Post here if you have any ideas for faster strategies. WIP1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HNgqAgBw28 Level 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-r7bBfpQXM watch in hd

I really can't see a faster strategy, unless if it needs to be more optimized.

I think MGS need emulation hacks, maybe this is the problem?

I'd love to help out, antd! I was considering do this game as a bonus PXM for my MGS Extreme run, but I see you beat me to the punch :) Also, for sneaking 1 - you know you can just throw him, right? You can still complete the mission that way.

I also get the infinite black screen. It happens on every level, not just the first one.

It started off fairly tame, but as more balls entered the picture it sure got a lot more entertaining.

The infinite black screen is fixed with an emulation hack (enabling SPU IRQ on any frame before loading). You can find it in the Map Hotkeys menu of PCSX. EDIT: I've been fooling around with the VR missions in MGS1 (which look the same as the first ten weapons missions in VR missions) and I tried to get optimal times in the Time Attack mode. Here is what I came up with: Weapons 1: 3.85 Weapons 2: 6.58 Weapons 3: 12.79 (can probably be improved) Weapons 4: 8.65 These times all use throwing on the guards (three-hit combo is way slower). Also, Daemon doesn't seem to like any of the ISOs of VR Missions I've tried to mount. Oh well.

WIP1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HNgqAgBw28 Stalling is faster than throwing on the 3rd stage.

It works fine for me. Maybe you have a bad VR missions ISO? This is mine:

I discovered a little AI quirk that might save time in a future VR missions run, especially in No Weapons mode when you can't throw cancel. When approaching a guard from the left, run just behind him and then, at the perfect moment, move up-right and around him. The guard feels you hitting him, but he doesn't turn around fast enough to register you in his cone of vision. A demonstration is here http://www.filefront.com/15186319/ai-diparound-demonstration.pxm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ol-kVQdxGY You might want to see how much this exploit can be used. It gets demonstrated a couple of times in this short video.

I still haven't been able to replicate that, and I have no idea how it works either.

O.O;; Damn! Now that is most definitely impressive! Mind you, it's been forever since I played this.. but that's better then anything I've pulled off. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Ah, the VR missions. I have a lot of strategies for these missions that I thought up back in the day. Fun times. I especially invested time in Advanced Mode, where my PAL total time for all 40 category missions eventually made it below 4:00:00. I know I wrote some strats down, that I'll have to find now, somehow. Most of them I know from memory, but some require more steps and precise placement. I can think of some improvement to the TAS posted, but I am sure it will be taken care of if it hasn't already. I do hope that the finished run doesn't use the Practice Mode, for obvious reasons. It would help somewhat for playing as well to have a timer present. Perhaps allow start from save?

I decided to necro this thread rather than start a new one. Now that I've finished my run of the Metal Gear Solid single-player campaign and antd apparently lost interest in VR Missions two years ago, I thought I could step in and do this TAS myself. It will be a lot less stress on my part than MGS, since each mission is self-contained and therefore long term planning isn't needed. It appears that, in order to unlock the "time attack" option for various categories, you have to have completed all the appropriate missions in practice mode first. Since I think it would be incredibly boring to watch every mission done twice, I am once again starting from SRAM, with a memory card that has completed every practice-mode mission but leaves the time-attack mode untouched. In order to avoid the same kind of problems I encountered with my MGS run, I am doing my verification movie first. I will try to do some general planning as I create the movie verifying the memory card I will use for this TAS. If you'd like, I can post WIPs of the verification movie to see what kind of ideas I can gather from playing this semi-casually. There is also a YouTube playlist of every VR mission in the game done by Omgarett, which you can find right here. I'm really excited to start working on MGS-like speedrunning again without having to go through the same aches and pains as last time!
