I understand the point of a TAS, but I don't understand why.
I already answered why. Because it's interesting to see how the game would be played by a flawless superhuman being without human limitations.
Don't worry sixofour. Warp is our resident argumentative cynic. We all still <3 you here.

You know, I've always found an interesting parallel. Regular speedruns and TASes are like regular wrestling (amateur, olympics, etc.) and professional wrestling. One strives for skills, the other strives for entertainment. Even though both involve the same main term, both are quite different from each other. That's usually how I explain a TAS to someone that's never heard of it before, and explain that it's a different style of speedrunning altogether.

Oh yes, and the reaction is similar between people who rag on pro wrestling (It's fake!) and TASes ("It's cheating!" or "It's fake!"). I was hoping someone would bring something like that up so I could make that final point. Thank you, Derakon. :D

Eh, I like the analogy of live performing vs studio recording better (as brought up by Blargg (sp?) before).

Hey, this does answer questions, thanks!
This sounds like SomethingAwful, where n00bs would say things like "wait there's a front page?" and then get put on probation.

Or even better, live performing vs. electronic sequencing and mixing. MIDI files are the TASes of music. You don't listen to a MIDI file and yell that it's fake.

I've always been split between the TAS and unassisted-speedrunning communities. On one hand, TASes annoy me just because of the fact that no one will believe that my speedruns are done on console. The average person can't tell the difference and so being called a cheater all the time is annoying. The one thing about this is that even if TASes didn't exist, I still think I'd be called a cheater in someway anyway. But since TASes are more well known now than they used to be, people assume that a lot of unassisted runs are TASed. Thing is, I shouldn't really even care what people think about my runs anyhow. On the other hand, I love TASes. They are very entertaining and provide interesting creative methods of glitching the games in odd manners. It's cool to watch something be done flawlessly. They are fun to make and you can find out a lot more about games than you previously knew just by playing through it.
