I was just thinking that maybe it would be cool to have an animated thumbnail of the published movies instead of just a static one? Some times there are suggestions for more than one screenshot for example. Why not just compile them all into an animated PNG (*.apng)? If we want to keep the spoiler level lower, this has to be done by a human instead of a script that just takes 10 pictures and compiles them automatically. What do you guys think? Personally I think it would add a bit more motion to this site then just static stills.

I always liked this one: http://tasvideos.org/223M.html Though if everything did it it might end up looking like hamster dance
I make a comic with no image files and you should read it. While there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. -Eugene Debs

How about using a script that chooses a random screenshot to be displayed?

Yeah. But most likely it would contain what some people would consider to be spoilers, which can totally ruin the fun for those viewers. That is not the goal here.

I'm fine with this idea, just make sure they're in order and skip any major spoilers.

I think it's better to keep static screenshots. Also, many browsers out there still don't support APNG files, so I'd recommend animated GIFs if anything, the palette isn't a big deal since most of the consoles on this website can't even reach 256 colors. But yeah, I don't think animated screenshots would be a good idea.

I'm inclined to agree with Nineko. The movie listings would look incredibly chaotic if most of the images were blinking. Perhaps there should be some support for archiving screenshots that are suggested as part of a submission so the submitter can call out their favorite moments? Edit: fixed spelling.

It's a shame, but it's true; the new IE8, Chrome 2, and today's Safari 4 release do not support APNG, only Firefox 3 or later and Opera 9.5 or later do.

How's this idea: Instead of a single screenshot, take like 5 or 6, and the graphic on the site page will cycle through them like a slideshow.

Also, if you made it so they only animated on mouseover, it wouldn't be so distracting for pages with several movies.

How much would it increase the page load time? My browser says that the SNES movies page is 262KB (for just the HTML), and has 112 movie images on it, which look to be on the order of 9KB each, for a total of around 1MB worth of image data. So the images are already four times the size of the page HTML, and are therefore the limiting factor on downloading page information. Expanding that seems like a bad idea; it'll make the page load even more slowly than it already does.

Bisqwit could probably check his web loggs to see which the most popular browser on the start page is. And still.. Those browsers that are not compatible with APNG would still display a static image. I do like the idea of rotating screenshots though, as CtrlAltDestroy suggested. I also like the idea with an OnMouseOver event to trigger the animation it self. I'm not that much into web design or coding my self, so I don't know how much work this would mean.

What's to stop people putting in gif's which aren't even part of the movie?
