I've made a pair of "Game-Specific History Pages" which exploit the ability to inject movie publications into pages. Bisqwit (a while ago) moved the SMB3 page from my namespace to the history section, so I've added an SM64 page in part at the urging of Mitjitsu. Warp, in particular, suggested pages like this for more games, and this is certainly something I had in mind as well. Any suggestions? Anyone willing to help edit? http://tasvideos.org/SMB3TASHistory.html http://tasvideos.org/SM64TASHistory.html

Why does the history page only have the low/any% run?

As mentioned in the other thread Super Metroid has quite a lot of history behind it, so it would make a good addition. Another game with lots of interesting history is rockman.

Because I'm lazy... and the any% runs for both of those games are the "notorious" versions.

As for the pages I think that all iterations of the run should be listed with a short description of what was new each time. It shows the history aspect much better and details the community effort and why they are so special. The SM64 page, for example, only shows the three benchmark movies which hardly does justice to all the various contributions that made the benchmarks so important. As for games, other than what has been mentioned (SM and RM1 should definitely be added), I think the only other runs worth adding would be Rockman 2 and Super Mario World any%.

You should also add ones for SMB1+SMB2. As Mukki said you should document all the movies in the obseletion chain including the currently published, not just the bench mark ones.

Well, I might list them all and hope someone adds commentary in between. The number of SM64 any% movies alone is quite daunting and I don't know if I'd be up to doing the research to compare between each revision. (The SMB3 article includes all the any% revisions I believe.) Same goes for SM which I'm not terribly familiar with, but agree would make for a good page. But thanks for the suggestions, I will try to at least get skeleton articles up for these games.

I can definitely help with SM; I remember all major breakthroughs that happened after Terimakasih's any% TAS. Other possible candidates are Castlevania, Metroid, probably Rygar and MTPO (I don't feel like suggesting Ghosts 'n Goblins; sorry, Arc). I would also nominate S3&K, due to it being an iconic movie, although the amount of iterations feel a bit short. Also, how about Adventures of Lolo? ;D

For a really "retro" TAS (would that be some kind of "double retro" or "meta-retro", a retro-TAS of a retro console game?) I would vote for a page dedicated to Solstice. It was one of the first runs ever published and has a long history with many improvements. It's also IMO one of the most interesting runs.

wouldn't it be great if those could be auto-generated and were linked from every movie-page? That'd need two changes though: a) consistent game names b) splicing off the game names into a seperate database table I had started the required database-changes months or years ago on a local test-server, but somehow the project was lost in time and never finished. Has any of the new overlords taken a deep dive into the source code yet? Anyone interested in reviving this?

I dont see what you want to "autogenerate", from what i can see on smb3 history you need to input some stuff to make it readable, else its just a list of movies without real purpose I dont think you can generate such comments, the "history" page itself can maybe tought

Listing all the submissions broke http://tasvideos.org/SM64TASHistory.html (Hit refresh a couple of times until it looks normal, then scroll down to see awesome breakage) It looks like http://tasvideos.org/748M.html and http://tasvideos.org/794M.html are the culprits...

I've updated the SM64 page up to the last 16 star run. I'll work on the rest later.

Cool, thanks Mitjitsu! Also to whoever fixed the rogue movies. I still haven't added any new pages, though editors feel free. See the source of the others to witness the magic of inserting movies into pages :)

To me, it seems people are insterested mostly in seeing the history for a specific goal - not all movies for a game. I think this function could be implemented without too much trouble, with the database info we have. All that is needed is the field "which movie does this movie obsolete", and then check the same info for that movie, etc. Does this seem like a reasonable solution?

Do you know what could also be interesting? A "making of" page for certain TASes. With this I mean more or less detailed descriptions of how the current TAS came to be, from the very first attempts, which techniques and tricks were discovered along the way (and which published movies first showcased them), what kind of background work was done, what kind of tools were created, and so on. All this chronologically categorized. Rockman, Legend of Zelda and Super Metroid are superb examples of TASes with a huge amount of work behind them, a lot more than can be seen from the latest publication, and I think it could be interesting to read about it.
