Okay, let this be the thread for all concerns and information about wi-fi hotspots around your area. To start off with, the one thing I hate about wi-fi hotspots is simply that the connections are slow even if a single user is logged in. Another thing is that most have filters so it's impossible to get on myspace/facebook/twitter. But that's not all. I figured some places do not allow others to connect their laptops to a power-strip to recharge their battery. Right now, this is all I can talk about because I am already at a wi-fi hotspot and my battery is running short. No joke. I got to sign off and find a place to recharge. I'll be back within a few hours. ^_^

The biggest problem I find with them is that they're range is too short, basically meaning that you can only access them if you're within the center of a major town or city, and the constant disconnections you get. I think the theoretical max atm is 7mbits per second assuming you're in view of the mast in a perfectly flat field and being the only person whose using it. I've heard WI-FI max might replace the WI-FI, allowing a range which can cover an entire city and have faster connection speeds.

WiMax is already implemented in Moscow. It's becoming pretty popular as well. Connectivity and speed/packet loss really varies depending on a trillion of different conditions, though, so it's still too early to make conclusions.

I'm the security-minded kind. If I'm on a hotspot, I treat it as though someone's running a packet sniffer and will tunnel everything. SSH or OpenVPN for me. It doesn't solve the power problem, but have you considered cellular internet if you regularly roam? I do that with my cell phone and tethering. As for power, I have a power inverter in my car. :)

Yeah, you can't find wi-fi hotspots here everywhere... only in particular places like airports, malls and mcdonalds and since I don't go to any of these places that often, I use 3G wireless internet.

About 9 times faster than T1 potentially, but it's not really that much.
