My friend said this to me the other day... He is saying that Speedruns and Time Attacks are pointless because games are meant to be played with "enjoyment?" and not sweaty microaccurate playing as fast as possible. He said that he'll watch a normally played video instead of fastest as possible. That's just sad I think. I don't see the point in normally played videos instead. :) I, myself, like making microaccurate stuff and then see the result in nicely made video. I play games without save states/on a console too... "normally" and not as fast as possible, but he still doesn't understand my passion for time attacks :) I just wanna know why you guys started this hobby (or job? :P) and what are your opinions about speedrunning and time attacking games. And at the same time enlighten my friend here why time attacks exist. :)

I have to say I agree with you and not your friend, but on the other hand, I don't see point in trying to perfect against arbitrary rules made by some game developing company at all in general. It's giant waste of time. Wrapup: There are so many views, each conflicting with each others. Do what you like!

To each his own, I say, If we start mocking the "normal" speedruns, we're no better than the assholes who call us "cheaters." Declaring that games are somehow "meant" to be played in a certain way is illogical.

That's what some people say. But that's like saying the 100m sprint at the Olympic Games is worthless because it's just running the same old stretch of track over and over again, and every now and then someone breaks the world record. Some people may find speedruns boring, but others (like me and the people of this site) think that they're entertaining to watch.

They are entertaining to watch, mostly because 7/8ths of NES games i played as a child i couldn't beat, let alone get past certain lvls. To see what you can "really" do in games and attack them, is part of the intrest in them. I remember owning Battletoads and a Game Genie, and still couldn't beat it. So, it's fun to watch. The title says all. Tool-assisted SUPERPLAY movies. Anyone can timeattack with the tools, but it takes someone good to produce entertaning movies of glitches and avoiding enemies, so on....

Well, consider the fact that mostly every speed run I've ever seen took place on a rectangular screen, and since a rectangle has four points, that proves that speed runs are in fact, not pointless.

i never really understood that flame war back and forth. i liked all the vids at Arc's site, even the Aesthetic ones. and i dont see speedruns as pointless, especially the Single Segment ones (and all the more important are Single Segment Metroid runs done for 100%). the inhumanly accurate stuff is nice, but i still like to see ones done without tools to assist them (non-emulated i suppose?). each has its pros and each has its cons, so in the end i don't care either way so long as i'm entertained or shown something i never thought possible. the only thing that REALLY bugs me is when people get the 2 confused or bring up the HE DID IT OVER 3 YEARS WITH VIDEO EDITING or HE CHEATED or w/e crap. oh, and im not intending a flame war... just a PoV. flame wars are pointless.
