So far the whole movie is about 47 1/2 minutes long (after 59 of 97 levels) I estimate the full run will probably be somewhere between 75 and 85 minutes.
Well, a video of a speedrun done on the real console was just posted to SDA... it finished in 1'31"30, I haven't watched it yet but I wonder if this guy came up with anything you guys haven't thought of... the time seems pretty good. http://speeddemosarchive.com/MarioWorld.html#96

No worries, I'm still alive. I've actually been checking this board daily :) I'll write my last exam in 2 days, wish me luck! And thanks for the link Weatherton, I'm really looking forward to watch that!!
Is it just me, or does this look as if your run was a good inspiration for this ^^ The guy made it through Tubular without a P-Balloon and until you showed it, I never thought it possible. None the less, it was a kick ass run and makes me wanna see yours finished soon so we can compare and figure if it can get any lower then 1h20m. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

I was thinking the exact same thing. A number of the techniques in that movie at SDA look similar to VIPer7's. Most of it was boring to watch, though, as quite a few levels were flown through at high altitude. It's obvious that low flying requires much more skill and accuracy to pull off. VIPer7: I noticed one trick from the movie that may aid in the run. At Mondo, he uses the hammer bros' platform to extend running on the very first dry terrain in the level. Sadly, I have a feeling this could save you a LOT of time. Also, I'm sure you probably have/will, but it wouldn't hurt to look at that console speedrun for ideas and improvements for the Forest of Illusion and beyond. Good luck with the exams. I hope everything goes well.

No I don't think that he knows about my run. There were a few levels where he used slower routes, even though the routes that I took would have been easy to pull off on a console (for example in the 2nd room of Donot Ghost House, or in Vanilla Dome 1b where he uses the trampoline instead of just flying up to the pipe). He also uses a different world map route, which is slower than mine, because it needs 6 more unforced movements, and also 2 more Star Road warps. And it also seems like he doesn't know about fast/slow flying. In some levels where he lifted off right at the start and just flew into the goal, he still was 2 timeunits slower than me (e.g. Donut Plains 4, Cheese Bridge b, Outrageous). Of course this is just luck to get the 1 "fast frame" on a console, but he could have forced his luck by doing kamikaze dives and eventually getting a fast frame (at least that's what I would do). Overall he is 4 minutes and 9 seconds slower up to the Forest of Illusions, and lost a total of 316 time units (the biggest difference was in Star Road 1a, successfully producing the smashola glitch is just a pain in the ass...) I haven't watched the video any further than castle#4 and don't know if he did any bigger mistakes later on, so I don't know if the 80 minutes mark can be broken. I'll watch the rest tomorrow, maybe I can estimate it better then.

Yes indeed, I'm a bit ashamed that I didn't think of this myself (because I already knew about the trick how to get running speed on smaller platforms, e.g. Vanilla Dome 3). I will change this in my movie, I guess it'll save ~ 3-4 seconds. Let's hope it doesn't cause too many desynchs... :S Apart from this, I didn't notice any places where he chose a faster route than me. Anyway, thanks a lot to everybody who wished me luck for my exam! I think I'm prepared quite well, if it's not too hard I should be able to pass it :) I will know more in 16 hours from now. ---edit--- btw, what do you think, should I reply in this thread? http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=other_games;action=display;num=1107414011;start= or would they only get pissed off about time attackers = cheaters etc.??

Alot don't mind, but I can see saying how he could fix things compared to your run not going over very well with the other people there...

Just talk about strategies, you don't have to mention the time attack.

Or if you do mention it, just say that you've seen certain things that would definitely help to improve this run. Don't say "Yeah, well, I did it faster, so there!" or they'll lynch you :P

Hey guys, Just to clarify, this run (the route, level strategies, etc) was pretty much thought entirely up by me. Reciprocal gave me a better Morton Koopa's Castle strategy than the one I was using, but that was it. I can assure you that none of the tricks in this run were "inspired" from the tool assisted video (including Tubular without p-balloons). I didn't even know one was being worked on until recently, though I can't say I'm surprised. I haven't watched that video and don't intend to. Nothing personal against you guys, but I don't feel like watching something that makes a run I put hundreds of hours into look like crap. Something about that just isn't right in my opinion. Sorry if that means I'm "incapable of enlightenment", but it's just my thoughts. I am curious as to what the faster route is though. Are you sure it is faster? Just because I have 6 extra overworld movements doesn't necessarily make it any faster or slower than your route. I guess I'm just glad I got a decent run online before the FCVE is finished. At least now I can have some satisfaction in knowing that it is the fastest 96 exit time before it gets smashed to pieces. *sigh* Kelly, good luck if you decide to beat my time. Looks like you'll have all the help you can get here, whereas I had none whatsoever.

Speaking of Reciprocal, I heard he did an 11 exit SMW speed run. Do you know anything about this, and if so, where I could find the video? Edit: I noticed this topic is locked now, so if you happen to know whether Reciprocal's speed run is online anywhere, you can send me a pm with the link to the video. If not, can you ask him if he'd be willing to upload the run somewhere? I'd be interested in seeing it.
